But spirits once again arose at the dance where all danced to the mu- sic of THE PROBE and later King Randy and Queen Kathy were crowned. You call that celebrating? Junior Class Play Now mother, are you listening? You mean he's still alive? A WIND BETWEEN THE HOUSES Eccentricity is all a part of the life of Gracie Martin. Each morning she and her deceased husband, whose ashes are in an urn on the mantel, share coffee and a de- lightful conversation. Her friends accept the arrangement, but her own selfish chil- dren plot to deprive her of this consolation for the sake of their own social life. They 'innocently' sabotage the urn, and nearly go undiscovered until, Gracie's granddaugh- ter puts two and two together, thus dis- covering their scheme. Yet there is a happy ending, for they find the funeral home had a 'mix-up' in urns. Everyone learns a lesson in tolerance. And Gracie? She is just delighted to have her husband back again! One Dozen Flowers to Mrs. Chantel Wright Dailey Miss Burke Director This I am Adam Wright Say Cheese It was a beautiful evening April 30, 1971 when the Juniors and Seniors of Leaf River High School and their dates assembled at The Silo on the Rock River in Oregon, Illinois for the annual Prom ban- quet. Everyone enjoyed the fine meal which in- cluded a choice of roast beef or ham, mashed potatoes, rolls, tossed salad, and for dessert, pie. Next, Randy Schelling, Junior Class President, wel- comed the seniors, and Kathy Wilson, Senior Class President, thanked the Juniors for what everyone hoped would be a delightful evening. Bill Hartje, toastmaster, then introduced Mr. Worth, guest speaker for the evening. Mr. Worth's talk was about Success and included many thought provoking comments and a few thought provoking jokes. 16 River Six Entertainment for the evening was provided by The River Six, a group of Junior girls, who captured everyone's attention with such numbers as Cherish and Bridge Over Troubled Water. This also was an opportunity for everyone to pass their Memory Books around the table for autographs. Everything had gone just as planned thus far and so Bill Hartje invited everyone back to the Bertolet Building in Leaf River for the Prom dance. The theme for the dance was A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes. The room was decorated with pink and white hearts and streamers. There were several wishing wells for those who believed in using them, and there was a huge covered fountain which was a work of art in itself. Punch and cake were served at the refreshment counter, which seemed to be a popular spot. Music for the dance was provided by Jeff and the Forgotten Souls a semi- rock band from Ashton, Illinois. For the second year this mod sound in music proved to make the dance a success. Both fast and slow music were played and even some brave teachers dared to venture out on the floor for a fast dance. At 11:30 the music ceased and everyone returned home after an evening well spent with many memories not soon to be forgotten. On Saturday morning May 1st at 8:00, two Charter buses pulled up in front of the school and 75 eager students and teachers boarded them for a day of fun, interest, and knowledge for all. First stop was at the Milwaukee Zoo for four hours of sight-seeing ani- mals of all sizes from all continents and environments. Especially en- joyed were the penguins, apes, and small mammals cages. After a while everyones legs got tired, but tour rides were available. Also everyone took time for a lunch or snack before boarding the buses once more. This stop was the museum in downtown Milwaukee. It was filled with Indian artifacts, telling the history of Wisconsin and it proved to be very informational. Next stop was the Mitchell Park Observatory, which was three huge dome-shaped greenhouses filled with tropical, semi-tropical, and desert flora. This didn't take long and everyone was getting hungry so we took off for the last stop, a huge shopping center, where almost everyone bought some souvenir by which to remember a great day, and also we had time to sit down and relax to a meal provided by the Juniors. By 9:00 everyone was thoroughly exhausted but were they ready to go home? Not yet. The Juniors had rented the Four Seasons in Freeport. After taking a little nap on the buses we arrived at the bowling alley for three hours of bowling and billiards. A snack was served before going home and there also was a little unexpected entertainment to the enjoyment of all. Now it was time to head back to the River and no one had to be coaxed, for now everyone could go home and recall a day which probably will be remembered for the rest of their lives. 19 SJI131HI V Varsity FRONT ROW--B. The 1970 football season turned out to be a disappointment for the Demon fans, but the boys were out there giving it all they had. Although at the end of the season the Demons could only manage one victory, they never gave up. The cause of the poor win-loss column is due to the fact that the Demons were never able to put together an efficient offense. We hope that next year will provide a more promising football season for Leaf River. Off and Running Bottoms Up! Coach Fry 22 FRONT ROW--Ra. Kuntzelman, B. Wellington, Ri. Kuntzelman, D. This year was a first for the Frosh-Soph team at Leaf River. It was the first time that our Frosh-Soph team competed in the conference. The young Demons only ended up with a 2--5 record, but showed some potential that will be greatly needed in the near future. Coach Lessen This should never happen! This season the Demons had their ups and downs. But in the end the standings weren't bad--9 wins and 14 losses. However even with a victory over Pec, 1 team in our Conference, made before tournament time, the Demons were worried. As in the past four years L.R. played Ashton in Districts. Defeat once again greeted the Demons. Defeat wasn't as bitter for the Juniors because they could return next year. But for the Seniors Bill Groen, Kim Sny- der and Darrell Birkholz, it was their last game and defeat wasn't something for them to take lightly. 27 BRAD LOMAX Guard TIM MULFORD Guard BILL HARTJE Forward RANDY SCHELLINC Guard Varsity Players KIM SNYDER Center DARRELL BIRKHOLZ Guard BILL GROEN CAPTAIN Forward KEVIN BRANSCOMB Forward REGAN LOVELL Guard Track Dennis Kuntzelman Ron Killer Bill Hartje Danny Zellers Randy Kuntzelman Steve Miller Rick Kuntzelman Coach Fry Many people feel the smaller sports such as track, baseball and cross country aren't important. In winning the sweepstakes trophy our band and chorus set a new record of 210 total points. The Band, Mixed Chorus, and Boys' Chorus all received superior ratings. We Award Mr. A.! Since Mr. Anderson has done so much for Leaf River's Band and Chorus and so much for the Band and Chorus members, the kids decided to show Mr. Anderson how much they appreciate his work by throwing him a party and presenting him with a gift. The club sent two spectator buses to nearly every game. As fund raising projects S.O.S. sold miniature corsages made by the members of the club. Also, the club sponsored another Spook Night. As usual mums were sold at homecoming. To change with the times, the members decided that they needed to wear something besides the blazers. So they switched to sweater vests with a Demon Emblem. During their education at Leaf River these Seniors learned many things. They gained knowledge from books, wisdom from incidents and gained know how through experience. This fall some Seniors may meet again at college. Others will continue their work they started this summer. Because they are one of the most spirited and willing groups of young people of this age, there is little doubt anything in the future will be able to stop them from improving themselves and the world. 70 Merry Lewis Salutatorian Jr. Attendant Julie Hageman, Cherie Seymour, Joanne Buskohl, Sharon Bloomster, Merry Lewis, Chris Wiles, Chris Nel- son, Debbie Cain, Linda Schelling, Renee Brown, Kathryn Rummel, Jr. Attendant, Tim Mulford.
