Dedicated to—Mrs. Esterly I think continually of those who were truly great. Who, from the womb, remembered the soul's history Through corridors of light where the hours are suns, Endless and singing. Whose lovely ambition Was that their lips, still touched with fire, Should tell of the spirit clothed from head to foot in song. And who hoarded from the spring branches The desires falling across their bodies like blossoms. What is precious is never to forget The delight of the blood drawn from ageless springs Breaking through rocks in worlds before our earth; Never to deny its pleasure in the simple morning light, Nor its grave evening demand for love; Never to allow gradually the traffic to smother With noise and fog the flowering of the spirit. Near the snow, near the sun, in the highest fields See how these names are feted by the waving grass, And by the streamers of white cloud, And whispers of wind in the listening sky; The names of those who in their lives fought for life, Who wore at their hearts the fire's center. Bom of the sun they traveled a short while towards the sun And left the vivid air signed with their honor. --Stephen Spender FORRESTON STATE BANK 83 years of Faithful Banking Service Growing Bigger by Serving Better Steve Bauer The Savior has come in His mighty pow'r, And spoken peace to my soul; And all of my life from that very hour I've yielded to His control. 'Twas only a foretaste of joys divine In Canaan waiting for me, Where sweetest of honey and milk and wine Were dripping from ev'ry tree. From glory to glory He leads me on, From grace to grace ev'ry day; And brighter and brighter the glory dawns, While pressing my homeward way. If fellowship here with my Lord can be So inexpressibly sweet, Oh, what will it be when His face we see, When 'round the white throne we meet? Oh, it is wonderful! It is marvelous and wonderful, What Jesus has done for this soul of mine! The half has never been told. --Mrs. C. H. Morris GERMAN AMERICAN STATE BANK A Little Bit Friendlier German Valley, Illinois Six-Room Addition Ground-breaking Exterior View Breezy Breezeway Construction BELOIT Bridge G Iron Company was contracted in the fall of 1968 to construct a six-room addition to the south end of the High School. After a long winter, it was finally completed just in time to see the seniors of '69 take their finals. Connecting our modern ad- dition to the old building are three heavy doors and a very 'breezy' breezeway. The large picture windows in each of the six rooms provide a means of escape for those students who become bored with studies. This badly needed addition has proved to be most convenient in our school life. All the world's a stage, And the men and women merely actors. --William Shakespeare MARV MILLER, General Contractor Phone 734-4789 606 W. 1st St., Mt. On Thursday night everyone gathered onto the athletic field to watch the class skits. Once again the seniors took the prize with a skit which foretold the outcome of the approaching game with the Forreston Cards. Naturally this lowered the underclassmen's spirits, but with the help of the bonfire and the cheerleaders, it was back up to par for Friday night's game with Forreston. In this dramatization, the Yankee from Connecticut is a young engineer just out of college and anxious to try his hand at every kind of mechanical device. He is knocked out cold by one of his experiments and wakes up to find him- himself in the Court of King Arthur. From then on, the striking con- trasts between the old and the new develop into a series of ludicrous events, with just a small undercurrent of elemental truths. Through the influence of the enterprising young engineer, King Arthur's Court has become modernized, but the engineer finds himself in hot water. An old mill, water fountain, and garden created the atmosphere for the dance which was from 8:30-11:30 at the Bertolet Building. Couples entered the dance through a huge beehive which covered the door. On the following day, we traveled to the Wagon Wheel at Rockton, 111. With only six returning lettermen, the coach had to look upon his other players to fill in the positions vacated by last year's seniors. The players worked very hard and gave it all they had. They started out the season rather poorly by getting beat by more experienced teams. The players finally got their fill of losing and de- cided they were going to win, and win they did, for they finished the season with two victories for a 2--6 record. Even though it was a year of frustration and losing, the season had its bright sides. Already the boys are looking forward to next year when they will have fifteen returning lettermen and a very promising year. No way will he make it. NORUP TRUCK LINES INC. The Demons had a bad year for the 69-70 season even though the won-lost percentage was better than that of the previous seasons. The potential and badly needed height was there but the boys just couldn't seem to put it all together. The Demons showed sparks of promise by defeating Dakota, who won their own conference tournament, and by coming back from 17 down in the first quarter to defeat Milledgeville by another 17. Junior, Bill Groen, led the team in scoring and re- bounding while team captain, Patrick Riley, hit consistently for a 69.9% average on free throws. Non-returning seniors are Kevin Wilson, Bob Wittenbeck, Pat Riley, Ed Lindquist and Orville Snyder. Returning juniors include Bill Groen, Kim Snyder, Regan Lovell and Darrell Birkholz. This year Pat Riley and Darrell Birkholz received special recognition for their achievements in basketball. Pat Riley received the Free Throw Award and M.V.P. The club started a new spirit promoter--a magaphone which was won by a different class each week for displaying the most spirit. All the members worked hard selling LRHS sweatshirts to support the spectator bus. Even though the Demons didn't always come away from a game as victors, they didn't let their spirit lag. Five hundred-one books were received on loan this year from the State library in Springfield and were distributed to the appropriate grade levels throughout the school. Thirty of these books were used by the kindergarten. The highlight of the year was a Book Fair held in the new gym. This was the first one Leaf River ever held, and through the cooperation of students, teachers, ad- ministration, and the community, was a huge success. Under the excellent leadership of Mr. Anderson, and through hard work on the part of the students, the band performed at the an- nual Band Contest, and received a superior rating. With the points from this, plus the points gained from solos and ensembles, Leaf River tied for Sweepstakes. The rousing beat of the band contributed a great deal to the spirit of the athletic events during the year. A Christmas concert and a Spring concert were given for the enjoyment of the public. The band members stepped out a little more proudly in their new uniforms, and appreciated the fact that they were much cooler than the old ones on hot days. The band will not rest on its ’'laurels'’ of a job well done, for they will practice this summer for marching during the 1970-71 school year. FINCH FURNITURE Come In and Browse Mt. Although out high school does not offer a journalism class, the newspaper staff provides an outlet for the creative writing ability of the students. Not only writing talent, but also artistic talent is needed. Just as important are the typists and mimeographers who help to publish this news- paper. Very vital to this organization is its supervisor, Mrs. Mayer, and also Mr. Flick, who assisted during the Jr. class play. MT. MORRIS DRESS SHOP Mt. Morris, 111. IN BACK —Debbie Klapp. Duane Becker and Brian Mayer cue in on the ideas other schools have put to use in their annuals. The annual staff is a long established organization which records theyear's events with pictures and write-ups in the well known form of the yearbook. Our membership increased when we decided to gain menbers on a volun- tary basis. Last fall several staffers at- tended a Yearbook Workshop at N.I.Y. which told us we had really better get busy with some new and exciting ideas. We have put some of these ideas to work by adding a color section and in- creasing the yearbook to 80 pages to allow for the addition of an opening and closing section. We also topped the sale of ads and yearbooks over any previous year. We are very thankful for the help and advice given to us by our editor-- Angela Bomeman, and our advisor— Mrs. Vieth.
