Senior Class History September, 1955, ushered a new class into the first grade. Under Mrs. Wood's guidance we learned our reading, 'riting, and 'rithmetic. In the spring, we all took a trip to the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago. On coming back to school, we second graders found we had lost a few classmates over the summer, but we had also gained a few. Miss Pagett instructed us in second grade subjects, and then accompanied the class on the train to Savanna and back in the spring. We arrived at third grade well on our way to becoming intellectuals! Mrs. Wilson helped us along by- teaching us how to multiply and divide. Giving a happy ending to the year, we took a trip to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. Mrs. Nash welcomed the new fourth graders back from summer vacation. We had geography for the first time and also learned to do long division problems. Spring rolled around to see us off to Field's Natural History Museum in Chicago. Back as fifth graders, Mrs. Newcomer taught us many things, including World History. Later in the school year, we had a picnic out in Mrs. Newcomer's woods. She later treated us to the Shriner's Circus at Rockford's Beyer Stadium. Our sixth grade year was quite eventful. With Miss Gertmann at the head, we visited the WREX-TV television station; had a picnic in Craven's woods, where we got to ride hay wagons over the creek; and took a trip to the Museum of Science and Industry. Things changed a little bit our seventh grade year. For one thing, we had two teachers instead of one; and we no longer had a mid-morning recess. Mr. Prust taught geography and science, and Mrs. Dunk taught the rest. We had a picnic celebration to commemorate our promotion into eighth grade. As eighth graders, we had four teachers. Miss Gertmann taught American History; Mrs. Dunk taught literature, grammar, and spelling; Mr. Miller taught science; and Mr. Winn taught mathematics. Grad- uating from eighth grade on May 28, we were now- on our way to high school. You have never seen such timid and obedient freshmen as we on the day we entered high school. Be- sides a few money-making activities --nothing! We did furnish card tables and food for Homecoming and then served the refreshments. Compared to our freshman year, our sophomore year was busy. We seriously started thinking about next year's prom. We had charge of the coat check at basketball games and sponsored fudge sales and a car wash in order to make money. Busiest by far was our junior year. We were kept jumping getting ready for the prom which was held at Chestnut Mountain Lodge at Galena, a winter and summer resort. The prom was a lot of fun and a huge success. Most exciting was our senior year since we knew this was our last. The juniors gave us a wonderful prom which took place in Chicago. The highlight of the day was getting to see the stage play, Fiddler on the Roof. The biggest day of all, though, came on May 31, graduation. After all those years, we had now become high school graduates. With future plans of four years of college, nurses training, trade schools, branches of the service, and other occupations, our education will have stood us in good stead.
