The Homecoming week-end started off with the Pep-Rally Thursday night. At the rally spirits were high and the appearance of the De- mon had an even greater effect on the students than expected. On Friday night the tension was overwhelm- ing with hopes that we would win our last home game of the season. During the game Alumni were renewing old friendships but with a watchful eye on the game. Then it happened! The Demons defeated the Franklin Center Eagles with a score of 42 to 12. The dance was soon underway with excite- ment mounting as to who would be the Royalty for 1965. Marilyn Schelling and Bert Patterson were selected for the honor of Homecoming Queen and King. As the night wore on, the dance proved to be a success and then that old melancholy song, Good-Night Sweetheart, told all that the dance was over, ending the 1965 Football Sea- son. The ambi- tious club began the year by putting on two one-act comedies. A lot of work went into Cabbages and Great Smokies, but it was worth the success with which the plays met. To add to the Christmas spirit, members of the Dramatics Club wrote and produced a Christmas musical, The Night Before. This colorful play took place in Santa's workshop and most of the characters were toys. It was the first musical in L. R. for many years, but judging by its reception, it won't be the last. At club meetings, Mrs. Esterly, the club advisor, led discussions on the phases of dramatics and members entertained with skits. The goal of the club was to provide a better understanding of dramatics. Mrs. Esterly, Advisor ACKER'S SHOE STORE 101 South Wesley Ave. Mt. Morris, Illinois MT. MOVES AHEAD This year the newspaper staff was composed of people who weren't afraid of work. To prove this fact, the staff began to put out a school newspaper, The Leaflet , again. Gary Fogle and Jim Stark covered sports and did their jobs well. Jeanne Patterson, Sharri Davis, Kara Witten- beck, and Linda Jenkins did all the club reports and some special features too. Chris Wittenbeck and Michele Snyder enjoyed themselves writing What Happens When. Marcia Wilson and Co-Editor Jane Bower man under- took the risky job of writing editorials, while Tonda Satterfield helped on a little bit of everything. Mark Beard, our artist, brightened up the paper with pictures, and Kenny Maxwell livened it up with his witty articles on events around school. Jerry Reynolds was kept busy reporting on the boys' organizations. Mrs. Mayer supervised all this activity with admirable calm. And what did Editor Kathie do? She just sat around and took credit for other people's work! Mark Beard and Kathie Wittenbeck talk with Tom Reay, at the annual Newspaper Seminar at Rock- ford. This plan was not put into effect until after the Christmas concert. The concert choir, which presented the Spring Concert; went to contest, along with many smaller vocal ensembles. This year we moved up to class C competition at contest and received a superior rating which made everyone quite proud of themselves. Being the smallest school in this class, no one had too much hope of winning the Sweepstakes. We were overjoyed when he learned we had tied for third place. The Seniors will miss band and they will be missed from the band, but under the superb direction of Mr. Anderson the band in coming years will continue to improve as it has done each year. Cheerleaders possess a similar spark that incites the fans to cheering. This year the fans were fired with this certain spark at every game. The basketball boys always received a tremendous roar when they advanced on the floor. In spite of the season this year, the cheerleaders were constantly arousing school spirit in everyone near them. It is a benefit to any team to have the cheerleaders lead the student body behind them whether they win or lose. This year the Demons had a poor season, but we were the champions in spirit. Baker 65 In the fall of 1962, the incoming Freshmen showed the usual doubts and fears about high school. They were a little in awe of upperclassmen, teachers, and high school in general. They began to feel as if they were a part of the school when they served refreshments at the Homecoming Dance. By the end of their Freshman year they had adjusted fairly well. The Sophomore year came and those who had survived through the Freshman year returned, eager to make a mark in school. To show their ambition and ingenuity, the Sophomores put on a hayride in the fall. They put work into this project and although it only earned them a small profit, they gained needed experience. During the winter the Sophomores managed the coatcheck stand, their only other money- raising project that year. As Juniors they really started working. The magazine drive in the fall, and the concession stand in the winter kept everyone busy. The arrival of the Junior rings was another big day; and the Junior play met with success. In the spring the Juniors spent time preparing a lovely prom for the Seniors. Finally, they were SENIORS! The three preceding years had all been but the prelude to this final year. The class earned distinction in many ways. Members of the class of '66 were leaders in every activity and the boys also led the athletic teams. Homecoming was a major event. The two members of the class who represented it ruled as King and Queen. Marilyn Schelling and Bert Patterson made a very regal couple. The Senior play was the main activity of the class, and it was well received by the audience. Many hours of work went into it. The class voted to give additional amplifiers as the class gift. As Graduation Day neared, preparation of the stage in the gym began. The girls gathered and made flower arrangements for the stage. Two large bells, bearing the class motto, WITH THE ROPES OF THE PAST, WE WILL RING THE BELLS OF THE FUTURE, were suspended over the podium. The Senior girls' sextet provided the music, a lovely ren- dition of Dear Heart. Marilyn Schelling was Valedictorian and Vinde Karrow was Salutatorian. The Seniors will miss school and the friends they nave made and it was hard to say good-by. The Sen- iors enjoyed their four years in high school and hope they contributed to its progress. They set a high standard for other classes to achieve. As is every class, they were unique. BEMIS MOTOR CO.
