Besides supporting the team fully, the Pep Club earned money. Blue buttons flashing a picture of the team, were sold and worn by the proud fans. The Pep Club gave an all school party along with theStudent Council to honor the Basketball boys. Plenty of food and recreation was available. Kathleen Myers, our very able President, led the club with the assistance of Bob Wells, Vice President; Carol Knodle, Secretary; and Sharon Wells, Treasurer. 33 Annual Staff PHOTOGRAPHERS T. Christine Griffin won third in the conference. Larry Smith won third and then fourth in the dis- trict. We were represented in the District Contest by Larry Smith in Comedy Reading and Chris Griffin in Extemp. We also entered a one act play The (Shoemaker's Wife. We placed fourth with the play; the cast consisted of Larry Smith as Hans, Suzanne Baker as his wife, Gene Sumner as Fritz. A debate squad went to the Sectional which consisted of first affirmative Christine Griffin, second affirmative Sue Jones; first negative Larry Smith, second negative Gail Palmer. The debate squad won two and lost six. The speech club also had a hayride, which after the rain, was a success. We also had the refreshment stand at the Valentine Dance. Student Council According to custom the Student Council put forth a grand Homecoming celebration with all the trimmings (pep rally, Dance, Coronation, etc.) rolling out the red carpet for graduated Demon fans. At Christmas they entertained the student body with a film that even kept the faculty rockin. With the help of cupid they initiated several new romantic episodes at their Valentine dance. Although everyone was rather exhuberant on the last day of school, the student council made the event even more joyous by sponsoring the picnic celebration at the White Pines. 37 e-e-asy “Aaron Slick from Punkin Crick” Just one little ole swig Applause? Maville, L. Gasmund, D. Carr, H. Poggiole, T. Kuntzelman, Coach Chuck G. Sumner, B. Wells, S. Carr, L. Leerhoff, D. Motter, S. Carlson, J. Kuntzelman. They said it couldn't be done. It is impossible for a new coach to come to our school and have a good season. But the impossible was done. After an average season, Leaf River was rated at the bottom of the pack, but Chuck and the boys didn't let this drop their hopes of winning. Chuck wanted to play a control game taking only good shots. It worked with a great shooting percentage. Leaf River dumped Stillman------Clobbered Byron — - and beat Ashton---------in a thrilling game. Then came the Dis- trict Tourney and Chuck pulled another ace and wanted a fast game played. When the players were in- formed that their coach was sick and couldn't come to the game because of the flu, the boys wanted to take the first two games for Chuck. The first game was with Stillman and the Demons were hot and beat a determined but out-played Stillman team. Again met big Byron and again the Tigers were out- played by a bunch of fired up fellas who wanted to win and have their Coach for the final game. In the final game when the Demons came on the floor the Cheerleaders led the crowd in a cheer that made the roof raise and the heart grow light. Just before the game, Chuck came and that was it. The Demons just couldn't lose and they didn't--beating Forreston for the first time in 17 years and their first district in 19 years. Although Chuck is leaving at the end of this year I know of a lot of boys whose hearts will go with him. We'll miss you Chuck, but thanks for a good season. 52 Baseball D. McKinley, J. Kuntzelman, L. However, the squad didn't give up. In the Conference meet the team showed a lot of spirit by placing third in the team standings. Dwight Motter, Larry Copas, Rick Maville, and Bob Wells combined to win the conference Mile Relay. Bob Wells also picked up firsts in the High Jump and 440 yd. dash. This year the Keith Gallup Track Award was close again. Ted Kuntzelman placed second with 136 points, while Rick Maville placed first with 146 points. 54 SOLOS: J. Croft, B. Croft, C. Griffin. The Leaf River band has been very active this year. A big Christmas con- cert was given with the Junior band and chorus. Then practice began for con- tests. We had many entrants and re- ceived several good ratings. The band received a Superior rating at State Contest this year, due to hard work and our wonderful director, Sidney Anderson. To finish the year the band performed the Annual Spring Concert. J. Stark, C. Esterly, D. Hazzard. Champs” S. Thomas, J. Bauer, B. Meier, G. Palmer. 57 BOYS' OCTET: L. Smith, J. Croft, JL. Thomas, C.
