They were one of four schools receiving a Superior rating at the State Contest for class D schools. This contest was held at Olivet Nazerene College, Kankakee, Illinois. They also financed the movie for the Christmas party. The Leap year Valentine Dance was sponsored by the stu- dent council, who added the King and Queen of Hearts to the program as an extra leap year addition. Carpenter The initiation for newly elected officers began this F.H.A. year. A chile supper was held as a project to make money. At Christmas a visit was made to the Brethern Home for the aged in Mt. Morris to carol them. Foreign speakers came to talk to us about their home countries of Japan and Greece. Sweetheart--Linda Cramer 'fyocaty 'PCast putune This year as money-making projects the F.F.A. sold soft drinks at the basketball games. We also sold garden seeds and gave F.F.A. pens and pencils to the three highest salesmen. In August of 1959, Linda Cramer, the Leaf River Chapter's Sweetheart, attended the banquet with President Ronald Bocker, given in honor of the Chapter Sweethearts and Presidents. After the banquet the sweethearts were escorted to the Stephenson County Fairgrounds where the F.F.A. Sweetheart would be chosen. Linda was elected one of the four attendants to the Section Sweetheart. On January 27, Karl Hagemann won the Section Beef award at Forreston, Illinois. On February 17, he attended the District 1 contest at Kewanee, Illinois, and won. May 14, he is to go to Urbana and try for the State award. They had a debate on Going Steady ; the girls talking for and the boys talking against, which proved to be quite enlightening. In March they put on a small skit and a one act play for the entertainment of the students. Students produced, acted, and directed; thus acquiring a new experience. The Pep Club sold mums at the Homecoming football game. They made and sold Demon oogles to help promote school spirit. Beside supporting the cheerleaders, they also bought them a large megaphone. Next on the program — The 1960 Junior-Senior Prom was held at Lincoln Manor in Dixon, Illinois. Toast- master for the occasion was Larry Smith, Invocation was given by Mrs. Esterly. The Welcome was given by Stan Carlson and Karen Peterson gave the Response. An after dinner speech was given by Mr. An- derson and we were entertained by the girls' sextet. After the dinner everyone danced through the lush tropical decorations to the music of Dick Lietz's orchestra. At one end of the floor was a tropical garden accented with a pagota house and a stone fountain. A false ceiling, wind chimes, and Japanese lanterns completed the Sayonara theme.
