Gfass Prophecy On the morning of May 27, 1965, as I was waiting for my first customer, I picked up the Chicago Daily News and the first thing I noticed was that DWAYNE TEMPLIN was the new editor. I continued reading the first page and saw that the owner of the TWA Airport, NORMAN KOERNER, was to be in town to preside at an executive board meeting. I then came to the item on the present employment situation by the noted financier, JANET HIGH- BARGER, who had started her career as a private secretary. A little farther down the page was a brief synopsis of the trial of VIRGIL HAGEMANN. Virgil had received his degree in dentistry and was being gued for pulling John Appleton’s false teeth. I turned the page to the Society Section and under a large picture read the caption, Tycoon Marries Society Girl. It was a picture of MILDRED BOOK who had married the owner of the great Tombstone Company, the largest business in the world! I read farther into the report of the ceremony and observed with surprise that the service had been read by LOREN KAPPEN- MAN. The bride was attended by MARY TOOMSEN, a waitress in one of the leading restaurants of Leaf River, (the second largest city in Illinois). Leafing on to the Entertainment page, I read that the world's outstanding aerialist, PHYLLIS LONG, of Barnum and Bailey Circus, had missed catch- ing the swing and had plunged 135 feet. Fortunately, she had been using the net, so was not sferiously injured. She was rushed to the hospital and after regaining consciousness had her registered nurse, DELORES KNODLE, admit the members of the press. I looked on into the next column when to my surprise I was reading about the splendid entertainment of ARNOLD SCHAPER, who was directing an or- chestra, and his co-partner, the singing and dancing star, SHIRLEY SMITH. Miss Smith is now appearing in Oh! What A Girl, the musical comedy sensation now on Broadway. Continuing my perusal of the paper (my customer was very late), a flashing advertisement came before my eyes. It read Baby-sitting with children during the day. ” It was a nursery owned and operated by DORIS BOOK in the suburbs of Mexico City. In the Homemaking section there was an arti- cle on Modem Decor by IRENE GENANDT. In the section on Agriculture there was a column headed Sheep. As I know nothing about sheep I was not interested in reading it, but a familiar name caught my attention. The article was wrtiten by the most outstanding sheep breeder in northern Illinois and he was the husband of MARILYN MYERS. They lived in Adeline, a suburb of Leaf River. An item on Angus cattle named ROGER SCHELLING as the first place winner of the World's Grand Champion Steer. I turned to the Sports section edited by SHELBY WAGNER, star sports reporter. In his column he told of the fantastic ability of a basketball player who had scored 50 points in the first game of the season. Accompanying the story was the photograph of HAROLD KUNTZELMAN named World’s Best Athlete of the year, and showed Harold making his favorite long shot from the center of the court. At the bottom of the page was a story on the biggest deer that had ever been shot in Wisconsin. It has been bagged by the game warden, KENNETH HAGEMANN. As I closed the paper I sat back and reminisced. I was nostalgic for the days back in Leaf River High School ten years ago. As I folded the paper I saw a picture of Eddie Fisher coming from my shop The MARILYN FISCHER Beauty Salon. I sat back and tried to project myself ten years into the future. What would I be reading about the famous class of '55? Mr. Gourley, Delores Knodle, Shelby Wagner, Arnold Schaper, Loren Kappenmann, Mr. Asbury. CHAPTER HISTORY The primary aim of the Future Farmers of America is to develop agricultural leader- ship, cooperation and citizenship. The Leaf River Chapter F. F. A. was granted a charter in 1930, with a membership of thirteen. There are twenty-four members at the present time. Illinois, as a state, is divided into twenty-five sections. There are twenty schools in Section I, of which Leaf River is a part. Leaf River entered, for the first time, a land judging contest, which was held near Freeport on April 22, 1954. The team placed seventh. The livestock and dairy judging contests were held at Elizabeth and Stockton, res- pectively, on May 7, 1954. The livestock team placed twelfth, and the dairy team placed eighth. The poultry and grain judging contests were held on October 23, 1954, at Forreston. The poultry placed tenth, and the grain team received sixth place and the eighth place individual. Norman Koemer and Roger Schelling were awarded the State Farmers Degree for their outstanding project work. Land Judging Team Norman Koerner, Roger Schultz, Roger Schelling, Dwayne Templin and Jon Wetzell. Shelby Wagner, Roger, Schelling, Jr. Hunziker, Norman Koerner. Jim Stukenberg, Don Cook, Ronald Craven, Jim Gray, (Not shown, Don Barnhart, Dale Ermey). F. H. A. is a national organization of pupils who study homemaking in junior and senior high schools. We work together for better and happier home life for everyone. We think that helping to make happy homes, now and in the future, is the most important thing that you can do for democracy. This year the F. H. A. has 34 members. There were 14 girls initiated into F. H. A. at the initiation cere- mony on September 30, 1954. Nine members and Miss Victor, our advisor, attended the officer's training school at Oregon on October 19. Every girl who went to this meeting came back with helpful ideas for our own club. As a means of making money, the F. H. A. sold fudge at noon. There were also 50 cent dues this year. The officers for the year 1954-1955 are the following: President - ------------------------- — Marilyn Myers Vice President----------------------------------- Sandra McKinley Secretary and Treasurer--------- — Janet Hoffman Historian— ------------------------------------ Delores Templin Parliamentarian---------------------------------- Shirley Smith Chairman of Recreation- ----------------------------- Myrna Reed Chairman of National and State Projects------------------Pat Myers Chairman of Publie Relations- --------------------LaVonne Burkhart Top to bottom; Susy Miller, Marilyn Fischer, Edna Donker, Carolyn Jones, Phyllis Long, Karen Thorne, Lorretta Buskohl, Sharon Bocker, Marilyn Kilmer, Marilyn Baal, Donna Snodgrass, Rosemary Sallee, Judy Norup, Miss Victor, Shirley Freeze, Irene Genandt, Mary Toomsen, Peggy Grundy, Mildren Book, Barbara Dorsey, Judy Fry, Judy Koerner, Pat Eisen, Nancy Ackerman, Fern Foltz, Doris Book, Phyllis Recoy, Pat Myers, Shirley Smith, Janet Hoffman, Marilyn Myers, Sandra McKinley, LaVonne Burkhart, Delores Templin, Myrna Reed. librarian s Marilyn Myers, Peggy Grundy, Phyllis Recoy, Delores Knodle, Loretta Buskohl, Mr. Katz, Marjorie Highbarger. “ Jnformer” First row; Mr. Katz, Phyllis Long, Shelby Wagner, Jim Hamilton, Marilyn Myers, Irene Genandt, Marilyn Fischer, Ronald Craven.
