Lead High School was host to the annual Black Hills Student Congress, November 15. Carole Krause and Bill Adam were elected Speakers of their respective Sophomore and Senior Houses. Beverly Coolidge, Susan Bennett, Diana Cooper, Marilyn Hendrickson, Dennis Moore, Larry Orr, and John Booher attended the State N.F.L. tournament in Aberdeen. Miss Bennett placed first in poetry reading, and reached the finals in humorous declamation while Miss Coolidge and Miss Cooper participated in the finals of their respective sections. Diana Cooper attended two other state contests, the State American Legion Oratory Contest where she won fourth place honors and represented the West River in original oratory at the State Debate Contest. Lead's Colddiggors started the season by losing to a very strong Rapid City team All-6. The Diggers then routed Spearfisli 10-6: the third eontest saw them go to Belle and lose a game that was to tell a great deal in conference standings. The following week the Diggers lost to Pierre playing good ball in the second half. Golddigger Day was celebrated in fine fashion by mauling Hot Springs fl-0-0. Beating the Sturgis Scoopers 23-6, Coach Wendell Handley's men were ready to meet and beat their traditional rivals, Deadwood, 26-0, winning hack the JC Traveling Trophy. Playing the last game of the year for the conference championship, the Diggers lost a hard-fought battle to the Custer Wildcats 23-6.
