RECEPTION for the HUNKINS Sunday, May 6, 1956

Page 7 text:

RALPH V. HLINKINS EDUCATOR, AUTHOR,lAND CIVIC LEADER Ralph V. Hunkins, a familiar name, listed in WHO7S WHO IN EDUCATION and also WHO'S WHO IN THE WEST, listed as an educator, an author, and an administrator. These titles, all denoting major accomplishments, still fall short when one considers they name of FRIEND which is given him by the students of the past and the present which have come under his firm, yet understanding guidance. There were better than 1800 registered in the system this year. All were known by name by Superintendent Hunkins. Pupils greet him eagerly, teachers respect and are happy working with him, parents call on him if problems arise, what more evidence is needed to show a person who truly loves and understands his work? Under his capable hands, the system has expanded, new buildings have been built, the finest and newest in books and equipment has been made available, time and money can be found for educational trips, maps, drivers' education, the safest and best protection for athletic wear, the arts, sciences, music, journalism, shops and home economics -- no department is slighted, all are high on the scale of importance in the eyes of the Superintendent. To him, his prime objective has always been the turning out of products each senior graduation, which are thoroughly prepared to take their places in thefields of their choice without further delays. The effectiveness of this claim, is shown consistently by the outstanding records made by Lead High graduates in all fields of endeavor from military science to ballet. His past reflects the richness he has obtained from living and has passed on to others. Born Valentineis Day, 1890 in Beaver Crossing, Nebraska, he received his Bachelor's degree.from Nebraska University in 1914, his Master's from Chicago University in 1921 and holds an honorary Doctor of Letters from Dakota Wesleyan awarded in 1937. ' A rural teacher in Nebraska in 1907, he advanced to a principalship in Archer, Nebraska in 1910. 1914 saw him take over his first administrative duties when he became superintendent in Essex, Iowa. Hot Springs, South Dakota, claimed Hunkins in 1918 and four years later, the fall of 1922, Lead was successuf in securing and holding his services to the present time. His dynamic personality and tremendous vitality are evidenced by the many educa- tional offices he has held such as President of the South Dakota Education Association, member of the 1946 Yearbook Commission, American Association of School Admin- istratorsg head of the State Athletic Association and the numerous books which he has written which include SOUTH DAKOTA, PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE, TEPEE DAYS, TRAPPER DAYS, SODHOUSE DAYS, SCHOOL BOARDS IN ACTION and many others, plus periodicals and articles to nationally known maga- zines. lVIr. Hunkins also holds citations for his promotion of speech and athletic activities but most prominent in the long list is the one from Fred M. Vinson, U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, in 1946 for his work on World War II bond drives. The Lead schools and the community will miss this outstanding citizen who, in terminating thirty-four years of guiding and molding the lives of its young people, has set a pattern of patience, thoroughness, justice and kindness with the Golden Rule as the shining foundation. - I
