Immediately after the beginning of practice, the call came for volunteers to assist in fighting the forest hte which was burning over miles of timber land. Coach Dunmire and his squad responded to the call and thus sacrificed much valuable time and energy which would otherwise have been spent in practice. Numerous injuries at the opening of the season also seriously handicapped the efficiency of the team. The first game of the season was an easy victory for the Golddiggers, their score being 77 and their op- ponents', 6. The second game, played with Sheridan High School, at Sheridan, Wyoming, proved to be a defeat for the Diggers, who made no score, while their opponents VINES Quarler Hot Springs-Lead Game Pony MARASOVICH WILLIAMSON NYBERG Half Guard' Guard History of the Season I Continued I scored 19, all in the second half. Early in the third quarter, Cetto scored the first touchdown of the contest and Alcrop made the extra point. In the fourth quarter touchdowns were made by Alcrop and Urban respectively, and the game closed with a score of 20 to 0. Probably the most disappointing game of the season was that of November 11, when the Rapid City Cobblers defeated the Golddiggers with a score of 7 to 0, a touchdown and extra point being made in the last two minutes of play. In spite of the inclement weather, a crowd of approximately 2200 people watched the most hard-fought game of the season, the contest which gave Rapid City the honor of the Black Hills Championship. Calendar of Events August 31, up betimes and away to school with lagging feet and sinlcing hearts. September bringeth football, with polished eyen and skinned shins. Then beginneth the heat. Days and nights of anguish and empty stomachs. Flames lick soles of beshoveled knights as they climb furrish trees. Senior dictatorship beginneth and trembling freshmen offer bribes in exchange for mercy at the fatal initiation. Snobbish seniors pilot blubbering freshmen oier the polished spaces. Lead defeateth enemy ranks from Newell. October, Nugget and Goldenlode chiefs depart for Brookings and bring home the pork. November, and impassioned howls of debaters disturb the naps of venerable scholars, dreaming of Santa Claus and vacation. April cometh with balmy days and spring fever. Fishermen heave their lines to the despair of poor little fishies, but many play hockey and leave the fishies to their own devices. This month also findeth track, when valient guardsmen jump the hurdles, put the shot, and burn up the track. Seniors H11 their vacancies at the expense of harassed juniors. And the newsboy was about right. Any poor man in America is a potential millionaire if he has the qualities of ambition, industry and thrift. Any financially independent man will readily tell you that his first thousand dollars was the hardest to acquire. With the accumulation of that thousand dollars he became more closely associated with his bank, he learned some valuable lessons about investment, and he developed habits of thrift. In other words he put himself on the right path to achievement. Our logical advice to any young man, then, is to set about accumulating that first thousand dollars without wasting a day. He may begin rebelliously and the process may be painfully slow, but very soon he finds that saving is more fun than spending.
