Text from Pages 1 - 128 of the 1977 volume:

If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away. Henry David Thoreau THE MELTING POT LeRoy High School LeRoy, Illinois 61752 Vol. 61 6 OUTSTANDING STUDENTS GIVEN RECOGNITION This year 18 outstanding students made up the prestigious and coveted National Honor Society. Students enjoyed such things as Hat Day, Sock Day, Lick ’Em Day, and '50's Day. The court (at right from top) consisted of Rich Robbins, Kelly Flanagan, Tim Bruce, Julie Dean, Rusty Dardano, Barb Morgan, Jim West, Donna Dean, Queen Justine Kirby, and King Brian Wright. The girls proved their abilities in an exciting powder puff football game, followed by the bonfire. Despite a team loss on Friday night, the Seniors compensated for themselves by winning 1st place in both the banner and float competition. The board promised the citizenry that if these two items were approved, the board wou'd only levy an increase of 25 in the education fund and 8 in the building fund for the first year. The citizens of the school district turned out to vote and passed both issues by a 3 to 1 margin (577 to 186). Parents, teachers, administrators, and board members worked very hard to publicize the issues in the referendum . The administration and board were very thankful to the district residents for their confidence in the judgement of the Board of Education. The district was the last in the county to ask for an increase in its maximum allowable education fund. HIGH SCHOOL SECRETARIES: (L to R) Ellen Sandage (CETA), Lynn Robbins. 1 An LHS Day Oh, yes, we're off to another school day. Many students drive, take a bus, bum a ride, or just walk to open those doors to a bright, cheery day (?) Inside, we might seek advice on classes or problems from Mr. Brady, or perhaps buy a lunch card from Lynn. Many of us just stand in the halls discussing what happened over night. But some are so excited about a class that they get there early. ( The early bird gets the worm, or in this case the A. ) Too soon, the bell rings and we're in class . . . We might start the day in study hall or in some class to wake us up, like P. E. Whichever, it all adds up to STUDY,STUDY.STUDY. As minutes ’’speed by we finally hear the one relieving bell signal--LUNCH. Illttlftl The school cafeteria is one place to dine ; but if we don't want to take a chance, it's either home, a restaurant, or maybe just a bite to eat at a store. After the hunger pains are calmed, it’s back to school for more knowledge. If we're lucky, we might start the day or end it by having a party, making something, or preparing for future life. We sit, sit, and keep on sitting as the minutes clock by until finally, finally school is out. But our duties are not over. Some of us practice, work, or go to a meeting, while others go feed their face. After a stopover at home, it's back to school to show spirit or to perform at a game. Now we’re really excited to be at school, but we wouldn't want the school to know that, would we?! 42 Row 1: (L-R) B. Morgan, D. Miller, H. Dean, K. Weber, J. Ambrose, K, Crosby, C. Marcum. Row 2: D. FRESHMEN SHOW GOOD EFFORT The Freshmen showed much promise in their first high school football season. They tended to be a team who could come through when the chips were down; such examples would be tying Fairbury after being down 12-0, and beating Argenta 12-6 with 48 seconds left in the game. The middle of the season the Panthers did well in scrimmages with Deland-Weldon and Farmer City, then fell short against Fisher and Argenta. In the last two games the freshmen showed alot of discipline, desire, and determination to beat Octavia, rolling up 390 yards total, and beating a very physical Eureka squad 18-6 in the season finale. In the Eureka game, especially, the squad showed that they could meet the challenge of football, and hopefully the squad will meet the challenges of the sport in future years. 43 8UPER-80PH8 SCORE SUCCESS The LeRoy Junior Varsity Football Team put together an 8-1 season. The squad was credited with seven shut-outs and gave up only 16 points all year. The offensive unit scored 190 points, with twelve different players making the scoring column. This year’s squad was large in number, large in courage and large in desire. The accomplishments were not the result of any one individual, but were the result of thirty young men working for a common goal. The football staff takes pride in presenting this young Panther football team. (L-R) Row 1: H. Riddle, D. Swallow, T. Mosier, Mk. Wey, T. Fippinger, R. Brown, B. Brown, B. Bruning, L. Lindstrom, M. LH8 FOOTBALL: WINNERS THAT LOST We began the 1976 football season with the high hopes of becoming a legitimate contender for a conference championship. Our first two games were against the two top contenders, Fairbury-Cropsey and Argenta-Oreana. We were defeated by Fairbury-Cropsey, 8-0, in the last two minutes of the game and by conference champion and State Championship contender Argenta-Oreana, 21-20, in overtime. After those two losses, our championship incentive escaped us, and we finished the season with a disasterous 1-8 record. Our preseason hopes possibly may have been delusions of grandeur. However, to best sum up the season, we should quote one of our senior players: Our team was made up of a bunch of guys that lost games. It wasn't made up of a bunch of losers.'' FRESHMEN HAVE SLOW START, GOOD FINISH Before Christmas, things didn't go too well for the young Panthers as they found themselves the owner of a 1 and 3 record. But then they made two great discoveries. The first was the realization that a good defense was the key to victory. The second was that they did have quite a bit of scoring and rebounding talent if they used it to their advantage. After this point both their ball playing and their record improved. The Panthers came back to avenge two of their earlier losses to Fisher and Hey worth. They won 6 of their last 3 games, losing only to Saybrook and Mahomet. In individual honors, Jeff Brown was the leading scorer for the year with 119 points, while Jamie Ambrose led in both steals and assists. Rich Munster was the team's leading rebounder. As far as shooting percentage was concerned, Jeff Brown led in free throws with 66%, and Mark Nichols led the field goal percentage hitting on 56%. 46 Mr. Tate is in his third year as freshman coach. J.V.’9 Have Tough Year, But High Hopes The Junior Varsity basketball team suffered through a 2-16 season, but it was not because of a lack of hard work or hustle. The team was outsized in nearly every game and had problems with their shooting throughout the season. There were bright spots, however. Larry Kirby improved a great deal during the season; and if Dave Swallow works on his shooting, he will be an excellent varsity prospect next year. Todd Fippinger led the team in scoring and rebounding. Dave Sparks developed into a good outside shooter. Two Freshmen, Jeff Brown and James Ambrose, contributed a great deal to the team the second half of the season. It was a tough season to go through, but the JV's did improve and with more work this summer, they should be able to help the varsity next year. J. V.'s get it together in practice. Defense — Key The Panther season started off slowly with two losses to Lexington and Octavia. Then the team started to roll with two impressive victories over Maroa-Forsyth and Hartsburg-Emden. With some momentum established , LeRoy went on to win its next 4 outings with a minor upset of highly-rated Argenta-Oreana and a revengeful win over Octavia. The 2nd half of the season put us in the County Tourney with a 6-5 record. We ended up with 4th place after upsetting Chenoa and losing to Gridley and Lexington. Our momentum seemed to pick up after we upset Deland-Weldon, knocking them from the top of the SVC. We then proceeded to win our next 6 out of 8 with a big upset over Central Catholic in the PIT, 49-45. We ended a successful season with a record of 14-9. 48 To Panther Success Row 1: L to R: L. WRESTLERS PIN NATIONAL RECORD Wrestlers Outstanding 23-1 A record is indicative of the people you have in the program and the 76-77 edition was fortunate to have good people. The accomplishments were many: A National Pin Record; a Conference Championship; Eight wrestlers into the Hall of Fame 22 Club; Six current squad members into the top 16 all time wrestling; Three individual season records; and Six team records. We could single out a lot of individual work, however, the athletes in the program know it takes a season long effort by the whole crew to achieve good things. This was a season where the LeRoy High School wrestlers were rewarded for their efforts. A special Thanks to our four Seniors; Rusty Dardano, Mike Mullins, John Monical and Greg Puckett for their leadership and direction. Your contribution helped us to maintain our fine wrestling tradition. Standing L-R: K. Weber; T. Wendland; J. Corzine; M. Hardesty; R. Jackson; B. Taylor; K. McGuire; Sc. Friedlein; R. Hanafin; T. J.V.’S BURN THE MAT: 16-1 After losing the first match of the season to Monticello, the JV’s went on to win 16 straight. And in doing so produced the best record of any LeRoy ]V squad. A successful season as the JV's doesn't just happen; it takes a lot of work, and pride. The squad of 76-77 worked hard in practice as well as in meets, and personal and team pride was shown throughout the season. This was an accomplishment that all members of the squad should take pride in and continue their success in the future. Some of the highlights of the season would be winning the three matches to a strong Mahomet squad, winning the LeRoy Frosh-Soph tournament, and placing fourth in the Catlin 16 team Frosh-Soph tournament, which is annually made up of strong wrestling squads who have a lot of Varsity experience. Tracksters Wheel and Deal The 1977 track season was one of very stiff competition in the SVC. The Panthers, with one of their stronger teams in years, could only come up with a third place finish in the varsity conference meet, second place in the F-S conference meet, and second in the county meet. The cindermen broke five varsity school records and four F-S school records. Judd Short established two new school records in the shot put at 57'2V$ and a twenty-four-year-old record in the discus with a throw of 154'9 . The old record was held by Glen Hill at 131'0 . Buddy Price reset his own triple jump record with a leap of 44'8!4 . The 440 relay team of Todd Fippinger, Mitch Hardesty, Brian Wright, and Greg Puckett set a record of 46.1. The two mile relay team also established a record with a time of 8:51.0. The members of the relay team are Gary Hamblin, Randy Brown, Alan Zehr, and Bob Brown. Fresh-Soph records include Mark Nichols in the high jump with a leap of 5'8 . Bob Brown shattered the 880 record with a time of 2:06.5. The F-S 440 relay record was lowered to 47.8 by Todd Fippinger, Mitch Hardesty, Bob Bruning, and Myron Adams. Fippinger, Hardesty, and Adams also lowered the F-S 880 relay time to 1:38.7 for a new record. Rusty Dardano gave a strong performance in the shot put with a best toss of 44'10 , while Brian Wright was a steady performer in the 440 and discus with individual bests of 52.5 and 138'8 respectively. Mike Thompson had a best of 12'0 in the pole vault early in April but an injury prevented him from attempting the school record in May. State qualifiers for the Panthers this year are Judd Short in the shot put and Buddy Price in the triple jump. MVP--Judd Short. Most Improved--Bob Brown. 52 SHORT WINS STATE SHOT PUT!!! Strong contributions were also made by seniors Tim Bruce, Rich Robbins, Brian Woodrey, and Mike Lindner. The team had good depth and should have a strong team next year. Hoping to improve on a subpar 5-9 1976 summer record, a young and eager group of LeRoy athletes took the field May 23rd against arch rival Farmer City-Mansfield. When the dust had cleared, the LeRoy Nine emerged with a 10-8 victory. Jeff Brown provided the pitching help and Gary Hamblin added a 3-run homerun (a tremendous shot over the 380 ft. marker in left centerfield.) Let’s hope that this portends great things for this young team. The Sangaman Valley Conference is especially tough this year because of the strength of such teams as Octavia, Argenta, and Fairbury. As of this writing, the LeRoy ball team had 14 games remaining--9 with these powerhouses . Senior players added experience and leadership to the young Panther team: Dardano, West, Bruce, and Robbins. 56 8P0RT8: A MAJOR, Not A Minor At L.H.S. A cheerleader's weekly activities included practicing, planning pep assemblies, making hall decorations, and dreaming up a new cheer a week. The girls were more acrobatic this year as they used a number of mounts, jumps, and splits in their floor cheers. They attended a one-day cheerleading clinic at Illinois State and acquired a number of useful ideas from the other participating squads. This year the cheerleaders sponsored the powder-puff football game and a dance to raise money for new uniforms. 63 WHAT WOULD WE DO WITHOUT OUR GREAT ATHLETIC SUPPORTERS?! Sports Get A Boost The Sports Boosters Club provides support and assistance for all sanctioned athletic activities of LeRoy High School. Qualifications are any interested adult not enrolled in school. This year they have had a picnic, sold raffle tickets for a Life Time Pass to all the games (which was won by Rod Mosier) and held a bake sale. They also helped out at games. DIAMOND GIRLS HAVE TOUGH SEASON Nine returning letter girls and eight new freshmen filled the berths in the niner's squad for '76. The diamond girls reported a 1 and 7 record, which reflected the construction work on the new team. The win-loss column did not show the many individual victories won by the Panthers. Marked gains were made in pitching, fielding, and knowledge of the game. All of these ingredients combined have made hopes for next year’s season very promising. We’ve Got F-E-R-V-O-R The Girls’ Volleyball Team delivered a 5-4 and 9-9 record for their 76-77 season. Seven seniors leave the spikers. They are Linda Bruning, Donna Dean, Julie Dean, Kelly Flanagan, Tina Hall, Barb Morgan, and April Smith. This year's squad topped most of their contenders with a height advantage, together with experience in the setting department. Court courage and serve reception are the areas that will need complete attention by next year's squad. Left to Right: 3rd Row: Coach LaCtmia, T. Albert. T. Riddle. B. Fry. D. Dean, J. Dean, B. The J.V.’s however, pulled out a 4-4 season with victories over Saybrook, Wapella, Tri-Valley and Fairbury. Both teams have a lot of talented players who will make a strong team next year. 68 The Year of the Track The 1977 victories for this year’s track team were countless in terms of team accomplishments and individual improvement. Without the 110% efforts of this year's squad, a successful season would not have been possible. Leaving the track with memories of a great season are fine seniors: Sprinter relay member Linda Bruning: high jumper, 440 dasher, relay member Julie Dean: high jumper relay member, Donna Dean: discus, hurdler, relay member. Sherry Remington; and long jumper. Birthe Haastrup. These seniors helped to create new challenges by shattering the Medley Relay time of 2:03 to 1:59.0 and shearing 11 seconds off the Mile Relay time to an impressive 4:26.5. Outstanding efforts were also made by the underclassmen. Three school records were broken by sophomore Julie Crosby in the 80 (11.3) and 110 (15.5) yard hurdles and the long jump (15'8% ). Soph. Kim Weber, who toppled the school record in the two mile on her first try, finished the season with a 13:32.1 best effort. Another soph., Vikki Scott, provided the sprinting to aid the record-breaking mile and medley relays. Angie Scaggs and Laura Haas look forward to closing in on record times in the mile and the 880 run next year. Freshman Beth Frey has collected many first and second place berths her first year in shot and discus. Freshman Chris Sexton proved to be an outstanding 440 runner to fill the gap left by senior Julie Dean. The track team as a whole relied on the diversified talents of its members to make their ’77 season a most exciting one. With the upcoming personnel and returning girls, the ’78 season will carry on the tradition of excellent track at LeRoy. TO THE GRADUATE Always be willing to listen, always know when to speak. And if you find you must follow, follow the strong--not the weak. Give of yourself and your friendship, see with your eyes and your heart. Know in this world all around you, that you have a wonderful part. For this is a brand new horizon, one where all you have learned. Can make you a leader deserving, the diploma you've so justly earned. by Helen Marie Zell Time out for a snack--Senior Trip. OUR SPONSOR Mr. Jeff Tate Walking through the gardens at Silver Springs, Florida. The Senior Class of 1977 worked very hard the past 4 years conning people to buy various money-making products such as pecans, baked items, candy bars, calendars light bulbs as well as playing Mr. Clean on roadsides, lawns and even chicken coops--in hopes to have a memorable Senior Trip. The Seniors enjoyed the makings of over $6000.00 to lour the sunshine state of Florida. St. Augustine, Daytona Beach, Disney World, Sea World, Silver Springs and Cypress Gardens were the sights taken in during the | week May 19-25. Everyone enjoyed 1 basking in the sun on the sands and inhaling all the salty ocean breezes, while time, like the gulls, flew by. In the beginning . . . there was work, and more work, and even more work. Senior year was a busy year, but the main attraction was sending announcements out and getting out!!! Seniors prepare themselves for baccalaureate and graduation. Walking down the aisle, many things run through their minds, but mostly they're thinking of completing responsibilities and walking out the door. Memories are left behind, but they'll always be happy ones.
