D WTU The Drama Department of LeRoy High School presented the period comedy “Dear Ruth” November 16 and 17. Marietta McManus, faculty director, double cast the women’s roles, increasing the work for cast, crew, and director. Greg Newlin, elementary art teacher, and his crew of carpenters outdid themselves again by presenting a beautifully-designed set of the Wilkin’s living room. The play opens with the introduction of each character: Harry, the father, a very reserved judge; Edith, Harry’s wife, a very flighty type of woman; Dora, the good-natured southern maid; Miriam, sweet-sixteen and very mature; and Ruth, twenty-two and very beautiful. Miriam is very involved in the world’s problems of the early 1940’s. She feels it is her duty to help the boys overseas by sending letters and gifts to boost their morals. Miriam is not quite as pretty or mature as Ruth so she decides to send Ruth’s picture to her pen pals overseas and use Ruth’s name. When one soldier returns to see the girl he loves (Ruth) and plans to marry her, conflicts are set up between Miriam and the family, Ruth and her fiance, and Ruth and her true feelings. 10
