The Freshman class hung their sign on Monday, the Sophomores flaunted their winning banner Tuesday, the Juniors contributed their spirited banner on Wednesday, and the Seniors hung in there with their display on Thursday. Thursday of Homecoming Week spirit started to gain momentum. The Powder Puff football teams wore their maroon and white jerseys to school to solicit support for the “big game.” That night the LHS student body gathered at L. A. McKean Field for a rousing pep assembly. Then the burley girls showed the boys how to play a stirring game of no-contact flag football. The final event of the evening was the bonfire. After a few rousing cheers, the 1973 Homecoming King and Queen were announced. Brian Cox and Julie Bock were the selected couple. Friday spirit soared. Skits were presented by various groups and the parade wound its way through the streets of LeRoy. The Junior Class won the float competition with the theme, “We’re Expecting a Victory.” That night, the LeRoy Panthers battered the Heyworth Hornets to a 14-6 victory. At half-time, Julie Bock was crowned queen. Following the exciting game, the dance sponsored by the L-Club, was held in the Elemen tary School. Kevin Schultz (7) leads the LHS football team to a rousing 14-6 victory over the Heyworth Hornets. Signs—Freshmen, Sophomore, Junior mmi Freshmen—“1-2-3-4 Show’em What Those Cleats Are For!” The Junior Class float was this year’s winner. Their catchy theme was “We’re Expecting a Victory!” Sophomore—“Raid the Hornets!” King Brian and Queen Julie reign over Homecoming activities. 7 Last year’s homecoming queen Kathy Bruce, crowned Julie Bock during the halftime. Marietta McManus, faculty director, double cast the women’s roles, increasing the work for cast, crew, and director. Greg Newlin, elementary art teacher, and his crew of carpenters outdid themselves again by presenting a beautifully-designed set of the Wilkin’s living room. The play opens with the introduction of each character: Harry, the father, a very reserved judge; Edith, Harry’s wife, a very flighty type of woman; Dora, the good-natured southern maid; Miriam, sweet-sixteen and very mature; and Ruth, twenty-two and very beautiful. Miriam is very involved in the world’s problems of the early 1940’s. She feels it is her duty to help the boys overseas by sending letters and gifts to boost their morals. Miriam is not quite as pretty or mature as Ruth so she decides to send Ruth’s picture to her pen pals overseas and use Ruth’s name. When one soldier returns to see the girl he loves (Ruth) and plans to marry her, conflicts are set up between Miriam and the family, Ruth and her fiance, and Ruth and her true feelings. 10 feutkWtfkinS—Dehra Cassens and Qhelbu U iigkt Uvua nU i(kins—Vncu PQiuaou and Juke Epperson f-fcwiy Wilkins —Tony Datdano Bditk WdkinS —Juke Bock and fCaMeen O ’Tdowike Dow—Cuganne Nice and Rabin Dean BM GeaneUghb—fCettk Weight flAattko Ceamight—Wanitou Gchofcetd and Vickie flAonical Akbekt fCut weA —Gene Bishop Chuck Vincent—JeMy Winters UajM Kiobbejuneyen —Jackfe Wayejv ■■■■■ Le oy Ptesetds. . . It seems the Burgomaster, Jerry Henson, wanted his daughter, Gretchen, Sonia Scott, to marry the governor, Mark Baker, but alas she loved a sailor, Hendrick, John Frey. How is this mess going to end up? It just so happens, that a couple of detectives, Sherlock Holmes, Mark Vickroy, and Dr. Watson, Eldon Bock, (alias Con Kidder and Kid Conner,) help to give a happy ending to a very sad beginning. Juliana, Julie Bock, the burgo master’s sister, just happened to meet the Governor first falling in love almost immediately, allowing Gretchen to marry Hendrick, Juliana is left to marry the governor. They comprised a 7-8 season record with co-cap-tains, Joe Ommen and Jerry Henson, leading the way with the help of Junior Phil Frey. The most outstanding accomplishment was Senior Joe Ommen getting to the State finals and finishing a very impressive 87. With high goals, we had a winning season but finished in a disappointing third place in the Sangamon Valley Conference. The 1973 football team achieved a great deal. It established eight new team or individual records. One record for which we are most proud is fewest points allowed by the defense in nine scheduled games—52 points. In addition, we placed six players in seven first-team offensive or defensive positions on the all-conference football team. Our goal in 1974 is the continuation of defensive excellence and the development of a potent and exciting offense which will propel the Panthers to the top of the Sangamon Valley Conference for the first time since 1956. In a phrase, our goal is “More in 74.” ObCaptains fCeiikW'dgkb and ad ldo6iet 23 4 PANTHERS panthers PANTHERS 83 80 B. Cov 4. C0V$Ulb T. VoA leuiO' panthers B. fClp t O. CoAkow r panthers L. Their tremendous improvement over last year was outstanding, while the teamwork and great desire kept them in every ball game. This group of young men will move on to varsity competition knowing they can do the job. The Freshmen put together two victories while learning a lot of football. If this year’s freshmen team shows the same improvement as this year’s sophomore unit, we could win the sophomore title in 1974. L to R Row 1: J. Remington, G. Puckett, T. Bruce, R. Robbins, B. PANIUE Q mfe QJCCBCCFVL CEAQON The 1973-74 Panther Basketball season proved to be both exciting and successful in rolling up a 15 and 11 record. Our R.A.G. offense (run and gun) made us the highest scoring team in the area with a 79.9 average per game. Because of our lack of height, we had to press and trap, hoping to spread out our opponent’s strength under their basket. These tactics allowed us to set 6 offensive team records: most points scored in a season (2077), highest scoring average (79.9), most field goals attempted (1888), most field goals made (832), best field goal percentage (44), and most freethrows attempted (630). Many individuals had an outstanding year. Dave Halm was named first team all-conference and second team all-state. Myron Gross was given honorable mention on the all-conference team. Bruce Woodrey rewrote the record book for assists. Dave Halm and Bruce Woodrey were voted by their teammates as honorary captains. Fred Rusher was voted Most Improved Player, Bruce Woodrey the Freethrow Award, and Dave Halm the Most Valuable Player Award. Our future at Le Roy High School looks bright. We expect to be winners for at least the next five years. We have finally turned our losing ways around. Win, this is what we are going to do. It will take hard work and determination, but the price we pay now will be worth it later. 27 V £—0N7U£ U L to R Row 1- Tim Bruce, Brian Wright, Kevin Spcalman, Jim Baker, Rick Gaffney, Jeff Johnson, Tim Marcum, T , ’, , a R„w 2- Mike Lindner, Manager, Ed Moreland, Steve Thompson, Scott Bloemke, Buddy Price Sg si:;:},:; FRESH U£N—MAk£-TWRfiA.ChE L to R. J.V. ’C CUMBWGU The Le Roy Jayvee Squad has certainly come a long way since they played as Freshman. We were a little concerned with the attitude of this group of young men when the season began. We knew they had the ability, but did they have the desire to get a .500 or better season? Throughout the season we had our good games and our bad, but we retained those needed qualities, desire, and competitive spirit. We are very proud of the progress and accomplishments of this year’s Junior Varsity squad. Congratulations on a job well done and the best of luck in your competitive future. While winning their first seven outings they recorded improessive victories over Mahomet, Deland, and Farmer City, giving LeRoy the championship trophy in the Farmer City-Mansfield Freshman Invitational Tournament. Relying on a tenacious defense which yielded only 663 points in 16 games for a 41 point average and holding six opponents to less than 40 points, the young Panthers completed a successful season, 12-4. The Squad posted a 19-1 duel mark, but more important they were Conference Champions, LcRoy Tourney Champions, District Champions, and claimed 3rd in the sectional. Le Roy also qualified its first wrestler to the State meet in the 98 pound Tracy Stills. The Panthers also boast eight wrestlers that moved into the Le Roy wrestling Hall of Fame. All eight won over 20 bouts. They were Rod Mosier (24-7), Tim Stills (22-8), Dave Carlson (28-5), Jody Edwards (21-7), Monroe Mullins (24-7), Brian Cox (23-6), Lloyd Lindstrom (20-8), and Tracy Stills (26-2). The squad voted senior Rod Mosier as the team’s most valuable wrestler, while senior 105 pounder Bob Lewis picked up the most-improved trophy. Freshman John Monical won the best junior varsity record award with a J.V. mark of 14-0. The 74-75 squad will again have tri-captains, as heavyweight Dave Carlson, 132 pound Lloyd Lindstrom, and 98 pound Tracy Stills received this honor. If any one word can describe this year's team, it would have to be TEAMWORK. It was truly a strong team effort along with a great deal of pride and courage that enabled this year’s squad to obtain such outstanding achievement. Many team and individual records were broken this year; however, these were secondary to team success. We hope the groundwork developed over the last three years will help us maintain our rich wrestling tradition. HALL OF FAME-Row 1 L to R: Tim Stills, Tracy Stills, Brian Cox. Senior Joe Ommen led the squad as he qualified for the state track meet for the second year in a row. Senior sprinter Keith Wright showed good consistancy in the sprint events, while John Frey remained a vital cog on our relay teams. The personable Brian Cox provided us with good depth in the distance events. The fact that only four seniors chose to participate this spring caused us to put alot of pressure on our underclassmen. We had a number of fine performances from our young runners: junior half-miler Phil Frey is just a second away from the school record, while junior sprinter Kevin Stocker owns the school record in the 220-yard dash with a 23.1 clocking on a curve. Junior discus thrower Kevin O’Rourke showed improvement and finished the year with a toss of 129’7. If we can show improvement in our field events next year, LeRoy will be a threat for the County Track title. This year’s squad picked up a third place trophy in the McLean County meet. Above, Phil Frey accepted the Award for Most Improved Trackman from Coach Bowman. Joe Ommen, left, accepted the Ken Bruning Sr. Athletic Award, the MVP Track Award, and the Outstanding Sr. Athletic award. This was the first time since the longer schedule (18 games) was instituted that LeRoy had won the title. (We even got a big write-up in the Bloomington PANTAGRAPH!!) 1 could not begin to mention all the highlights from our championship season, but who could forget Greg Hamblin’s tremendous home run at the first Octavia game. (Who could forget John Frey’s clutch triple at Heyworth) or the brilliant pitching of Myron Gross and Mark Schultz. And what about the great double play at Fisher killing the Bunnies rally? It was a great season. All players, with the exception of Schultz, will be returning for the summer of 74. Two of the projects of the Council were visitation of other conference schools and promotion of school spirit by having a special day each month, such as Valentine Exchange and Mad Hatter Day. Free rides to the second game of the McLean County Basketball Tournament and Homecoming Week Activities were also initiated by Council. Clockwise: Mrs. Core, advisor; J. Bock, Sec.; T. Class sponsors Mr. Meaker and Mrs. McManus Working towards the Senior trip, the Seniors have done many odd jobs. Among them the glorious jobs of cleaning West Park, picking up the roads, and cleaning out Miller’s Chicken Farm. The Juniors it seems, have done the most work this year. It started with the Homecoming festivities, when they earned a first on their float. During the football, and basketball seasons they worked in the concession stands and bake sales, while at the same time sold magazines. In March they held a benefit chili dinner for Tonja Denney. Then came waste-paper baskets, and their biggest project: the Prom. The Sophomores also participated in Homecoming and received a first for their sign and a second on their float. They also sold candy at the beginning of the year, and had bake sales. The Freshman, besides working on homecoming, sold pecans. During this summer they plan to have a rummage sale and a Pancake and Sausage supper at the Fall Festival. He has been teaching vocational agriculture for twenty-seven years, fifteen of those in Le Roy. Along with teaching, Mr. Bateman is active in Future Farmers of America and Junior class projects. He is a very dedicated citizen, church member, and educator. Although Mr. Bateman is retiring from teaching, we’re sure that he will continue to be involved with the youth of the community, since he has always given his time to students whenever needed. Le Roy High School will miss Mr. Bateman very much. 98 99 100 101 102 103 104
