IN MEMORIAM MEMORIAL FOR ALMA DEMLER AND LORENE WIETING “Now there are some things we all know, but we don’t take’m out and look at’rn very often. We all know that SOMETHING is eternal. And it ain’t houses and it ain’t names, and it ain’t earth, and it ain’t even the stars ... everybody knows in their bones that SOMETHING is eternal, and that something has to do with human beings. All the greatest people who ever lived have been telling us that for five thousand years and yet you’d be surprised how people are always losing hold of it. There’s something way down deep that’s eternal about every human being.” (Thornton Wilder, OUR TOWN) How does one say goodbye to friends? Especially when those friends can no longer hear us. LeRoy High School said goodbye to two friends this past year, Alma Dernier and Lorene Wieting. These women were indeed friends of the students, faculty, and administration of LHS. No less were they friends of the LeRoy community as they gave freely and completely of themselves to the task of educating the children of the community. This education went far beyond books, recipes, and typewriters. From the dignity, dedication, and devotion of these two, no student could have failed to gain some small measure of these qualities. As life seemed to deal harshly with them, they gained strength, courage, and faith. From within the crushing weight of their own frail frames, they emerged as beacon lights of the rare glimpses of immortality which are afforded us on this earth. Alma came to the profession of teaching late in life after already being dealt many personal tragedies. Yet she was a master teacher who possessed the very qualities she sought to instill in her students: discipline, femininity, dignity, thoroughness, and great joy in a task well-done. No half-way projects ever came out of her department. The end of Alma’s life was lived by these same exacting standards. She disciplined herself, remained thoroughly feminine, took joy from the remembrance of a life well-spent, and kept her dignity even in the face of death. Lorene, too, was a master teacher who demanded the very best of her students. She had been a teacher all her adult life and exemplified the finest compliance to the demands and ethics of her profession. She was thoroughly feminine, disciplined, and dignified; but who can forget her merry laugh, her great wit, or her courage whenever she saw a wrong and set out to right it. Her students respected her and knew that her unswerving emphasis on doing a job correctly or doing it over were the means by which she consistently produced high caliber young people. Perhaps the best testimonial to Lorene’s skill as a teacher would be the fact that a student recommended by her needed no other proof of their ability before obtaining a job in the McLean County area. As she lived, so did she face death: without fear, calmly, with great dignity, and unending devotion to her family. How does one say goodbye to friends? These words cannot convey the true essence of these women. Perhaps we should forego words and simply attempt to live as these women did: with dignity, devotion, dedication; never questioning life, but constantly striving to become better. Then we would not have to say goodbye, for they would never leave us.
