ORGANIZATION SPORTS ACTIVITIES LeRoy High School Presents The 1971 Melting Pot “Crossroads” Vol. 55 ADMINISTRATION CLASSES IIS MEMORIAM Mrs. Dernier Mrs. Wieting IN MEMORIAM MEMORIAL FOR ALMA DEMLER AND LORENE WIETING “Now there are some things we all know, but we don’t take’m out and look at’rn very often. We all know that SOMETHING is eternal. And it ain’t houses and it ain’t names, and it ain’t earth, and it ain’t even the stars ... everybody knows in their bones that SOMETHING is eternal, and that something has to do with human beings. All the greatest people who ever lived have been telling us that for five thousand years and yet you’d be surprised how people are always losing hold of it. There’s something way down deep that’s eternal about every human being.” (Thornton Wilder, OUR TOWN) How does one say goodbye to friends? Especially when those friends can no longer hear us. LeRoy High School said goodbye to two friends this past year, Alma Dernier and Lorene Wieting. These women were indeed friends of the students, faculty, and administration of LHS. No less were they friends of the LeRoy community as they gave freely and completely of themselves to the task of educating the children of the community. This education went far beyond books, recipes, and typewriters. From the dignity, dedication, and devotion of these two, no student could have failed to gain some small measure of these qualities. As life seemed to deal harshly with them, they gained strength, courage, and faith. From within the crushing weight of their own frail frames, they emerged as beacon lights of the rare glimpses of immortality which are afforded us on this earth. Alma came to the profession of teaching late in life after already being dealt many personal tragedies. Yet she was a master teacher who possessed the very qualities she sought to instill in her students: discipline, femininity, dignity, thoroughness, and great joy in a task well-done. No half-way projects ever came out of her department. The end of Alma’s life was lived by these same exacting standards. She disciplined herself, remained thoroughly feminine, took joy from the remembrance of a life well-spent, and kept her dignity even in the face of death. Lorene, too, was a master teacher who demanded the very best of her students. She had been a teacher all her adult life and exemplified the finest compliance to the demands and ethics of her profession. She was thoroughly feminine, disciplined, and dignified; but who can forget her merry laugh, her great wit, or her courage whenever she saw a wrong and set out to right it. Her students respected her and knew that her unswerving emphasis on doing a job correctly or doing it over were the means by which she consistently produced high caliber young people. Perhaps the best testimonial to Lorene’s skill as a teacher would be the fact that a student recommended by her needed no other proof of their ability before obtaining a job in the McLean County area. As she lived, so did she face death: without fear, calmly, with great dignity, and unending devotion to her family. How does one say goodbye to friends? These words cannot convey the true essence of these women. Perhaps we should forego words and simply attempt to live as these women did: with dignity, devotion, dedication; never questioning life, but constantly striving to become better. Then we would not have to say goodbye, for they would never leave us. Pam Sutter, Vanesa Pluira and Alice Michael gaze at the world map minutes before a test in Mrs. Small’s World History Class. 31 Good grooming is what it is about, and Tim Evans, Joyce Roberts, and Dave Halm, from the Freshman Class, show about it, with a sample of the combs the class sold as a money making project. The Sophomore Class was up in a tree until they decided to sell magazines as their big money making project. Peggy Underwood and George McFadden listen while Mike Hillard reads a fantastic article from one of the magazines. Senior Bake Sales were on top for money making. Shown here at the Christmas Bake Sale are Pam Sutter, Chairman, Alice Michael and Amy Kiper. In the back -ground is Mrs. Thompson, employee at the LeRoy State Bank, where the Bake Sales are held. 33 Dollars And Sense “May I help you?” Those are the famous words of Kay Lowe (one with the mouth open) as she trys to con someone into buying a coke during intermission at a home basketball game. This is one project that the Junior Class took on as a money making idea. They also kept the Coke and Candy Machine full, for the students benefit during lunch hour. Student Sit-In??? NO, It’s only a Senior doing what he got paid for. Jim Edgington spent the day on the floor, as did all the other seniors, after some lucky Underclassman purchased a senior at the Auction held in the New Gym. Don Zook, local Auctioneer came in and led the fun as one by one Seniors took the platform to be bid against during the Senior Slave Day. Mother’s Day comes but once a year and when it did this year the Senior's were ready for it with a Bake Sale. Outside the Bank, where the sale was held. Sue Dean and Tony Schlosser are shown explaining to Jimmy Reek how to register for the free cake that was given away to some lucky mother for Mother’s Day. Mrs. Lynn Girbert decorated the cake with lots of flowers and icing to make the cake more desirable to the people. The winning mother was Mrs. Greg Bane. 34 LeRoy High School ORGANIZATION Freshman Class members on the Student Council are Dave Halm, John Bossingham, Bob Flegel, Karen Zimmerman, Vicki Henry and Rita Kearney (Not Shown). Kirt was behind the cage in more meetings than this one shown. The Council this year proved to the student body that they had power; and was not just a group of people that got together twice a month to have a chance to get out of class. Through the efforts of the Student Council and Pain Sutter, girls were permitted to wear slacks to school this winter. Although when the weather got better and shorts were demanded, the Council lost most of its popularity. The Council also hosted two very good assemblies. Both assemblies were with the Substitute Math Science teacher, Mr. Briggs. Mr. Briggs gave the L.H.S. Students a sample of his talent, by singing and playing the guitar. The Marching Band Members, the attraction during half time and between games at football games, also marched in the Memorial Day Parade. Mr. Kazmerski hit it off fine with the new students, and the students found out that they could joke with him .. . about his nationality. Not only is Mr. Kazmeriske a fine Band director, but he is also an excellent musician, playing all types of instruments, but mastering the flute the best. The 1970 season was one of excitement, wide open football, glaring errors, and heartbreak. The young Panthers started the season blowing a lead to the eventual champs, Fairbury-Cropsey and lost 13-16. They ended the season running all over Fisher and lost. Injuries played a key role in the Panther’s dismal year starting with John Kearney’s broken wrist and Doug Foehr’s broken arm. In every department, the Panthers outdid their opponent almost 2 to 1 but could not come up with the big play. Defensively, it will be hard to replace the graduating seniors, captains Henry, Connour, and Foehr along with Schlosser, West, Ferrell, Kearney, O’Rourke, and Reid who set 2 defensive records and kept the opposition to 2.4 yards per carry against them. This year’s seniors worked hard for four years and because of their efforts a reputation has been built and maintained that LeRoy Football is good. If next year’s seniors have learned anything from this group, the next step is the top. All Conference Honors went to Kirk Henry—career passing receiving, Dan Estes—passing yards, Pat Whitehouse— pass receiving, and Kirt Connour-assist in tackles. The team voted Kirk Henry as most valuable back and player and Dan Ferrell as the most valuable lineman. Captains for next year are Jim Rafferty and Mike Wagers. Captains Kirt Connour, Kirk Henry and Doug Foehr wish next year’s team the best of luck. 56 (First row): M. White, M. Hillard, D. Simmons, E. Leary, I. McCauley, G. Yount, G. McFaddcn, M. Balance Guides J.V.’s to 5-3 Season Although the Sophomore team found ways to lose the first two games in the closing seconds, they bounced back to win the next five games and complete a very respectable 5-3 season. Coaches Donovan and Thompson commented, “The most impressive characteristic of this group lies in their overall balance. We wish them much success and hope they add to their winning tradition”. The 1970 Season was the year that was for Cross-Country at LeRoy High School. The Harriers racked up the winningest record ever compiled by a LHS Cross-Country team ending up 14-1 in dual meet competition. All this was capped off with an overwhelming first place finish in their own LeRoy Invitational Cross-Country Meet. This squad was by far the strongest ever fielded since Cross-Country’s introduction to LHS. The returning lettermen, Dave Burcham, Doug Dotson, Keith Leathers, Rich Murray, Dave Wheet, BobS tarr, Dick Dean, Kurt Bock, Dave McLaughlin, and Jim Vickroy received quite a bit of help from two hardworking runners, Steve Marcum and Joe Ommen. Prospects for next year’s squad are very bright as only four seniors will be lost leaving eight lettermen to make next year’s squad. Winning should now become a Harrier tradition. Dave Burcham was selected by his teammates as Most Valuable Runner. Co-Captains for the 1971 squad will be Keith Leathers and Dave Burcham. Rookie William Ferguson coached the squad. He may even be back next year. Early in the season injuries carried over from the fall along with “green” mistakes started the season off in very mediocre fashion. Inability to shoot well in key situations during the entire season added to the frustrations. However, problems such as these are problems that many teams have and should not be used as excuses. They are obstacles that can and should be overcome with teamwork, desire, pride, and willingness to “pay the price”. This year, the price was not paid with the result being much less favorable than what was anticipated. Rick Kline Mike Whitehouse Jim Edgington 61 J.F.’s Post 7-10 Season This year’s JV ball team compiled a 7-10 record. The youthful Panthers made many mistakes but through these mistakes they learned a great deal and gained a lot of valuable experience. The dividends should pay off next year for them. The leading scorer for the JV’s was David Wheet with a 12 point average per game and a shooting percentage of 41.2 per game. Richard Murray led the team in rebounds with an 8.7 average per game. Rich also compiled the best free-throw percentage—59.5. Steve Marcum hit on 44.9 percent of his field goals to lead the team in this department. Seniors on this years’ squad were Jim Vickroy, Bob Starr, Kirt Connour, Chet Knapp, Mike O’Rourke, and Steve West. Champions were Lyle Carlson with a 22-3 record winning the Conference Crown, Clinton Crown, and Leroy Invitational. Lyle, only a Junior has another year to rack up another good year. Kirk Con- nour, 15-4, won his second Conference Crown and the Leroy title. Bob Starr, 19-5, won at Clinton and Leroy. Mike O’Rourke, 19-6, won at Clinton and went the farthest in the district to get 4th place. Returning lettermen next year along with Carlson are Jim Rafferty 12-10, Keith Taylor, 10-13, and Rich Bruning 10-13, which looks like a year of rebuilding as a team and these five going far-individually.
