LE 0 R L33 A mariner putting out to sea, does not sail forth merely for adventure. He has in mind the course of his journey, his ports of call, and his final destination. A student entering high school, is like the sea bronzed mariner. He follows a course layed out for him and he, too, has bright visions of the journey's end. The adventures, joys, and sorrows falling to the lot of these trusty mariners now sailing the Sea of Knowlege are depicted in this book. May it bring to you through its pictures and sketches the spirit of their voyage. A person not aequainted with it would 'think of it as a plaee where industrious students are at all times seeking more knowledge from their text books before they are ealled to tl1eir classes. This person appearing at the Study Hall during the noon period would see some' thing quite different from that pieture. He would see girls and boys -a few imlustrious Zlllli many otherwise engaged. Everyone is talking at the same ti111e while the astonished yisitor eannot distinguish one intelligible 'word. He draws eloser to a group of girls eolleeted around a small dark haired iiapper who is loudly proelaiming tl1us: Saayl You don't think I'm going to miss that danee just beeause we have to write that theme, do you? It isn't everyday 1 ean go to a danee, let me tell you. I suppose you would pass up tl1e ehanee if it was to make you lose a little precious time for writing a preeious little theme l l.oud protests from the assembled girls that they wouldn't miss' the danee if tl1e instruetor hadn't said that the theme would make a ,great ditferenee in their term grade and parents won't listen to explanations about sueh matters as poor grades. l.eaving .these he prot-eeds towards a number of boys twho seem to be in earnest etrnxexsation although talking very loudly so as to be heard above the din of voiees. Couples eomposed of a boy aml a girl talking together seem- ingly inditterent to the eommotion around them are seen on all sides. A quartet made up of boys is heard trying to serenade a group of admiring girls while another group surround a piano. played by a vieious blond, singing. Am I Blue? Near by are some boys. who seem to have not yet out grown their ehildish ways, playing with a toy popularly known as the Yo-Yo. liverywhere the visitor looks, girls are ehattering. boys laughing and shouting, until he begins to think that he is beholding a second Tower of Babel. Suddenly silenee deseends upon the room. Every student has rushed to his seat, snatehed up a book and has begun to study. The astonished visitor is wonde1'ing what w ll happen next. when a teal-,her enters the room. The visitor's iirst mental pieture of a Study Hall is now realized. Every student is or seems to be studying industriously as if he had never dreamed of causing sueh a hubbub as has just subsided. As the visitor departs gazing back at these suddenly transformed students, he notiees a bust of one of our' great statesmen adorned with a boy's eapt which some youthful student had kindly supplied.
