QIOLIDLIDLIDQZO THE MELTING POT THE SCHOOL YEAR 1927 - 1928 A BY SUPT. CHARLES E. JOINER LID We have been very happy and fortunate this year in the excellent hi2h school teaching staff. We have been equally fortunate in having such fine co-operation from the boys and girls of the high school. There has been less friction between teachers and pupils than in any other of the nine years since the iwriter has been connected with the schools. This is due in no small degree fo the line support the teachers get from the Board of l-Zalucatlon and from the patrons. This makes Empire Township High School a very pleasant place in which to teach. The teachers appreciate this very much. I have been employ-ed as superintendent for the tenth consecutive year. W. Earl Taylor has been employed as principal for the fifth year: L. A. McKean for the ninth year: Ruth Sanders for the fifth year: Elizabeth' Rinehart and Esther Smith for the third year while Misses Mcl'oy. Noble. Spangler and Mr. Bailey have been em-ployed for the second year. We are very sorry that since their re-election, Misses Sanders and Rinehart have resigned. The Board of lilrlucation is to be congratulated on the settlement of its insurance for damage done to the superintendent's dwelling and to the High School by the tornado of April 19, 1927. The amount received on damage to both buildings was approximately S18,000. which ls considered fair and just to hoth parties concerned. Even those of us so closely connected with the school sometimes marvel at our success in literary and athletic contests. I can refer to this briefly: In six years we have Avon the Music Literary Uontest four times, the Athletic l'ontest three times. and the Sweepstakes Banner twice. This banner has been awarded only for two years and is given to the school which wins most points in both Literary and Athletic events. We marvel at this record when we remember that about fifteen schools compete for these honors. Then too. the football team has come through undefeated for three years during the six years. Une big step forward is the acquisition of an athletic field in the east edge of the city. This will eventually be fenced and a track constructed, so that Lelioy may become the center of athletic meets for this section of the state. The last excellent thing I have space to mention is the fine spirit of the school and its growing devotion to a higher standard of scholarship. Our people are justly proud of the high school, its fine building and beautiful grounds and the palatial public library adjacent to the hi-gh school.
