They have to schedule each student in the school, individually, according to their needs, desires, and future goals. In addition to scheduling, they also administer the many aptitude and I.Q. tests that are used to place students in the classes suited for them. A career workshop for juniors was started again in January. In cooperation with Genesee Community College, the Guidance Department helped the participants to investi- gate the various career opportunities open to them. The Guidance Department also must keep seniors in- formed about college board exams, scholarships, college ap- plications, and financial aid forms. Librar GERALD HALLIGAN-B.S., M.S. SUNY at Geneseo. ADVISES: Jr. Library Club. When someone mentions the library, the first image that comes to mind is walls lined with books, and a librarian busily working behind a desk piled high with books and mag- azines. There is much more work that must be done to make it possible for people to borrow books Cand use the many re- source materials availablej at no charge to them, than is re- alized. There is a workroom downstairs where the librarians and secretaries do all the things necessary to make a library function. Mr. Halligan likes to refer to this room as the nerve centerl' of the library. All the small things that keep the library operating smoothly and efficiently were taken care of in this room. The seniors came to appreciate the library this year even more than the other students, because they had more spare time on their hands. They discovered the library was more than just a place to go when a book was needed in a hurry. They found it a convenient place to do homework or to just spend extra time with friends. If they got a little too noisy, Mrs. Hill was always on hand to give her version of the ABC's: A . . . sit together and work quietly, B . . . separate and work alone, or C . . . leavef, This wasnlt neces- sary too often because the seniors didn't want to leave. The library had become one of their special places for a mo- ment. ELIZABETH EARL HARE-Q ROSE 0'GEEN- SUTTELL- , B.S. SUNY at Secretary. P ysical Education A new program was initiated for se- niors this year to coordinate with their new scheduling program. The school year was divided into six Physical Ed- ucation units, each unit covering a span of six-weeks. Seniors were re- quired to complete five units of 12 hours per unit, for a total of sixty hours. Many different programs were offered in each unit. These included: camping, snowmobiling, volleyball, golf, tennis, bicycle riding, skiing, swimming, and horseback riding. Se- niors fulfilled their Physical Education requirements in their spare time, after B.S., SUNY at Brockport. Girls Phys. Ed. 7-12. AD- VISES-G.A.A, COACHES-Girls Soccer, Basketball. Those who didnlt desire to participate in this new program were scheduled for a tradi- tional Physical Education class during school time. LeRoy was one of the first schools in this area to attempt this type of Physical Education Curric- ulum. It was organized mainly through the efforts of Mr. Santini, Miss Eaton, and Mr. Jay. Many new co-educational programs were introduced into the traditional physical education curriculum. Classes were combined to instruct students in the basics of golf, tennis, and archery. The Health Department at LeRoy covers a much broader scope than is realized. The LeRoy School system has two health offices to handle the needs of both high school and Wolcott Street School students. The Health personnel makes cer- tain that each student has his teeth cleaned annually and has a physical examination bi-annually. Each stu- dent must also have his eyes and ears checked each year, as Well as their height and weight recorded in his stu- dent tile. Another function of the Health Department is to educate students in good health habits. Health is taught as part of the fifth and sixth grade curriculum and is required to be taken I-Iealtlli SHARON COLLINS B.S., Alfred U., Gen- eseo SUC. School Nurse-Teach- er. Driver Education Since the invention of the car in the l890's, man has needed to learn the skills involved in driving. Unlike the l890's, this opportunity is available through Driver Education courses. This opportunity is fast diminishing, as many schools are forced to cut driver education from their budgets as an economic savings. Mr. Simon feels that it is important to continue the course in all schools, due to the hazards encountered in everyday driving. Through Driver Education, students were able to prepare for their road test. They learned parallel parking and three point turning, and also gained expe- rience driving in heavy traffic. Classroom instruction was held once a week, in addition to the time spent on the road. During this time, films were presented on safe driving habits. The students also had the opportunity to speak with representatives from various law enforcement agencies and insurance companies. ,.,Lx,, . l,4k. :.r.1- .nf - H-..
