Social tudies ,,.,..,.x-..., . . ...,. . , .. . .., The social studies curriculum is a combination of the past and present. Students learn to take concepts from the past and apply them to the present. Through current events, students are kept aware of the world around them. Sociology and eco- nomics classes take a portion of class time each day to review the current events of the previous day. American history classes spend one full period each week on curernt events. Social Studies on the junior high level consists of New York State history in seventh grade, and American history in eighth grade. Social Studies nine is the study of other countries and their customs. In the tenth grade, world history is studied. American history is presented again in the junior year. Seniors spend half a year studying economics and half a year devoted to the study of sociology. E Social Studies students also participate in Model UN and Model Congress each year. These activities enable students to learn how the actual Congress and United Nations operate.

English The English Department strives to help students under- stand literature as being the interpretation of social values and universal experiences. Teachers and students work to- gether to see literature as a commentary on life which de- scribes what men feel and know about themselves. Students work with the various elements of English to assist them in analyzing and criticizing the themes, trends, and techniques V which authors use in their work. This approach enables each student to see how the communication of universal ideas is accomplished. Each step in our life is a place for a moment. Authors attempt to translate this feeling into literature. They use literature to express their feelings and theories about life. English strives to help students understand and appreciate the message that different authors are trying to get across. English teachers want their students to see literature as some- thing enjoyable and worthwhile, not just as another assign- ment that has to be done. They hope that through the read- ing of prose and poetry students can see each moment in life as beautiful as the author saw it. Toward this end, a new program was initiated in the seventh grade. In this program, students were required to take two English courses. One dealt with grammar, public speaking, and composition while the other taught literature, spelling, and vocabulary. Language Proficiency in a foreign language can be a valuable achievement. Modern ways of travel make our world a small one and therefore, the possibility of meeting a person from a foreign land is not unlikely. Spanish students discovered this when a Spanish-speaking family moved into the community. These students spent their free time teaching English to the three elementary school age children of this family. The Spanish students found themselves learning as well as teach- ing. Spanish, French, and Latin are offered on three levels. A fourth level is offered if there is sufficient interest. The first level in each course is spent learning the basics of the language. This consists mainly of syntax, translating read- ings, and speaking simple sentences. The French and Span- ish classes spend time at their earphones listening to dia- logues to learn the correct pronunciation. The second level in French and Spanish concentrates more on the use of vo- cabulary along with emphasis on speaking. The students learn more grammar and rules associated with writing and speaking. Spanish Ill students read Cervantes' DON QUIXOTE, while French Ill students read many popular novels. Latin II students spend most of the year translating Caesar's GALLIC WARS. In third year Latin, students read numerous essays by Cicero.
