su-J-e-we e a s.,....re English English is a generalized curriculum. It covers a broad area, each subject related to the other, yet performing a separate function. Grammar entails the pronuncia- tion, spelling and usage of Words. It is important that a student become competent in the mechanical aspects of the language before he attempts to Write or speak fluently in it. The art of maintaining poise and self-confidence in front of a group was the objective ofthe public speaking class. Students were given both impromptu and ex- temporaneous speeches in which they employed their skills in oratory. Literature made up a major segment of the curriculum in all grades. Students learned to interpret and enjoy the works of many authors. Poems, prose, essays, and many other types of literary works were read and appreciated by English stu- dents, thus helping to round out their experiences in literature. An introduction to drama was taught, and students were given a deeper un- derstanding into the performing arts. In most classes, part-reading was done by the students, creating a clearer picture of how the characters interact with each other to form the plot. Barbara Crane-B.A. SUNY at Geneseo. 1, .t Ti X N Social Studies History is in the making at l-.ll.S. We live it, we see it, we ARIS it. Man- kind learns lrom past mislakes, jnst as he takes pride in his progress toward a more civilized and advanced world. The social studies department related these past historical events to the en- tire student body. Audio-visual aids such as: lilm- strips. records. and supplementary readings were used extensively. Such ing while they gave the students a more perceptive view on historical achievements. Current events had a great affect on students and played an important part in classroom discussions. Riots, wars. and population problems were impor- tant areas ot' study. These need to have a prominent place in classroom activi- ties. In almost every social studies class. students were expected to know what was going on and express their opinions on it. r 'Cl'-V Donald Gepfert-A.B. Russel Sage U.,Adv. Study SUNY at Brockport. Soc.
