'l :ti'amino Student Council 'With the capable leadership of its officers and a considerable increase in student interest. Student Council has experienced a very successful year. As the 1957-1958 school year began it was acknowledg- ed that the first item on the Cfouncil's agenda. which demanded immediate attention. was a previously incurred debt of 3131.35 The first Student tfouncil sponsored activity. which happened to be the first dance of the year on the new floor of the gymnasium. commenced the drive to rid the 0l'g311l7Hil0l1 ot its debt. To supplement the Financial drive. red and black metallic pins with 1..eRoy printed on them were sold by the Council. Thus Student Council overcame one of many obstacles facing the govern- ing body of a school. 1-Nnother accomplishment that benefited Student Council concerned the members attendance. l re- viously there had been no set rule governing one's attendance. Consequently the number of student members present ai each meeting varied consider- ably. To meet this situation the following state- tnent was written into the minutes of Student Council: f'Anv member ot Student Council missinff , 3 three meetings without an acceptable excuse will be exempt from his duty. 1X highlight of this years activities came on November Sth. 14356. when our school and Student council was host to the Xlfestern New York State Student Council Conference. Many hours of plan- ning and working by our own members went into this successful meeting. .Ns the year progressed into late November the suggested idea of closed dances came before Student Council. lt can be said that this idea was fine of the most controversial subjects of the school year. .X committee was formed which consisted ot members oi Student Council as well as non-members from various classes. The responsibility of this body was to examine the possibility of closed dances for l-.l l.S. and to propose a solution. An assembly' was held in the early part of january to discuss with the student body the committee's new proposal and to discuss their viewpoints on the subject. Deciding whether the senior girls should wear dark or light sweaters or blouses and whether the Board of Education should be a group picture or a number of individual photos are typical of the countless minor problems that had to be settled. l can think of no better demonstration of the quotation 'l'rifles make perfection but perfection is no trifle than the publishing of a yearbook. lf Vou like it. and we certainly hope you do, it yvilly bg because of the innumerable trilies which have been met and conquered! ----if 34 F320- We 4 Staxtclinggz l'. Stevenson Football l.eRoy's CJ-At-Kan knights this year, what thru a building process. felt no mercy at the hands of the other C.VV.C. teams, many of whom were exceptionally well equipped to meet the Red and Black. The Knights last year placed second in the conference. Starting the season off against an lrondequoit squad, paced by two-time all conference choice Ken Slater, the Knights went down to defeat 35 to 6. ln the second encounter of the season the Knights bounced back from defeat with a mag- nificent team win led by Sophomore halfback Laney Furr, quarterback Russell O'Geen and Doug Scott. O'Geen passed to Furr twice for scores and the speedy sophomore scored once from his half back slot on a running play. Scott scored the last T.D, on a running play from the thirty yard line after the l.e Roy line, which had played an exceptional game all day, had mowed down the Fast Rochester forward wall. Out- standing linemen and defencemen for the day were C'osCapt. Dave .fXbbott. Larry Reid, Sam Maloni, Sam Misiti, ,loe U'Cieen and .loc l.. Frank. l.e Roy the following week traveled to ever powerful llrighton lligh where the Barons, 56 led by two fast backs by the name of Repsher and lleller, drubbed the Knights 35 to 6. This game proved that l.e Roy was still very inex- perienced in some positions, especially the ends. aloe .-Xntinore scored the only TD. against Brighton and is the only Knight who has scored against the Barons in the games that have been played the last two seasons. Last year Antinore scored on a 80 yard kick-off return. Returning to their home stamping grounds at llartwyood Park the following week. the Knights led VVebster 13 to 0 at the half. ln the second half VVebster bounced back for 27 points while holding Le Roy to their 13. The Knights out- played the Ridgemen and held their rushing attack. but XVebster capitalized on a couple of pas interceptions and fumbles to win. O'Geen passed to lfurr for one T.D. and Vlunior halfback Rod Steverson ran twenty-three yards for the other. Traveling to Fairport the following Saturday, l.e Roy was hampered with injurys and used lfreshmen and Sophomores in the starting line up. ln the following games with Canandaigua and Newark, l.e Roy was beaten by scores of 45 to O and Sl to 19 resepectively. ln the final game of the season the Knights .- aluxlfq fought a tremendous battle with a classy Batavia team, but a kick-OH return T.D. in the second half proved to be the margin of victory for Batavia although they never crossed the mid- field stripe after that. Statistically the Knights were way out in front even on passing, although the game was played in a snowstorm. Batavia won 13 to 6. Outstanding during the season were Co-Cap- tains Russell O'Geen, and Dave Abbott, Doug Scott, Micky Lapp, Larry Reid, Glenn XVhite, joe Frank, Sam Maloni, Brian Clark, Ron Shirley, joe O'Geen. Sam Misiti and Roger Rogers, who was hampered by injuries most of the year. All of these boys will be lost either through graduation or ineligibility. Cohen Baseball ---All 60 At the time this writing was handed in, the l957 baseball season had not yet begun. How- ever, the young mens' fancy had already turned to the upcoming smack of bat against ball. the thoughts of soreness after those hrst rug- ged workouts. and the butterllies in stomachs before the first game. The varsity aspirants were looking toward the sky. hoping for sunshine and warm weather, a lack of which hindered our batsmen last year. This year's team was composed of a relatively great number of seniors. lost through graduation last year were only four ballplayers, Don Paladino, Brian Niccloy and Sam Tabone, inhelders, and VVayne Collins, an outfielder-pitcher. The seniors on the squad this year could remember the closeness of their drive to the sectionals in 1956, and were all determined to reach that goal. ig..- Many say that the pitching stall is the core ot the ball Club. lf so, Coach .I ay could expect a wealth of varsity mound experience. Russell O'Cieen, Dave Abbott. llunter Alxander, and -lack XX'ilcox all did some line hurling last year for the varsity. Before the season starts there are always questions and possibilities of one of the hurlers from the 'lV squad making the grade and adding extra strength. Three juniors who had become eligible to get a varsity berth after playing on the -lYs were Ted Thorn, Doug lfiero. and Hob lled- man. The other two juniors with previous baseball experience, l.ee Cravatta and Ed Yauchzee, were with the Varsity last season and were looking to solidify a starting position on the club this year, Other returnees to the Knights who have had varsity experience include Roger Rogers, a catchr. Larry Reid, an innelder-outfielder, and Allan Cohen, an intielder. all of whom have been playing varsity ball since their sophomore year. Doug Scott. an outfielder ,also has var- sity experience, and will be eligible to roam the outer pastures agan this year. .-Xt the beginning of the 1957 sesaon Coach ,lay had ll returning lettermen, all of last years returning players, to try to better last season's good record ol' 7--l. Graney Seated: Mr. Jay thletic Association The B. A. A. is the Boys' Athletic Associa- tion. At the beginning of this year in the gym classes. the members of the BAA elected Bill Graney as president, Patil Boylan as vice- president, Bob liurr as secretary and llob Ilameister as treasurer. The organization is under the direction of Mr. lay. high school boys! physical education director, .-Xll of the athletic activities of tha high school boys come under the wing ofthe BAK. which is composed of all the boys in the high school. The princi- pal duties of the officers is to help check the expenditures and receipts of the Athletic Association while the members sell advance tickets for athletic events and publicize these events by such methods as distributing posters to the various stores on Main Street. One of the most highly anticipated events of the school year is the handing out of the PZ.-XA awards. which is done in assembly pro- grams in December and Tune. The award is a large chenille l, on which appears a symbol representing the sport or sports that an indi- vidual has earned a letter in. To earn a letter in baseball a person must play in two complete seven-inning gamesg in basketball he must play in the equivalent of three full games or 96 minutes of playg in golf he must partitcipate in three--quarters of the meets. in all other sports the awarding of letters is left to the discretion of the various coaches who work out an equit- able system based on an individual's contribu- tion to his team. The Boys' Athletic Association is not an organization which participates directly in many money-making activities such as dances, bake sales, skating parties and the like: but its position in the school is an important one. In addition to such major sports as football, basketball. baseball and track, it manages such so-called secondary sports as golf and the junior varsity teams and even other events like ping-pong and volleyball which are provided for the student body. It is organized in such a some type of sport activity boy in the high school who permits others besides those major sport to take part in competitive sports where otherwise they might be neglected. The aim of the organization is to make everyone a sportsman. Vive feel that l.e Roy is a better school because of this and that Le Roy students are happier and better behaved because they do have a legitimate outlet for energies that have been kept pent up by spending hours in class- room activities. way as to make available to any desires it. H I- Seventh Grade The seventh graders recovered temporarily from the first shock of becoming high school students and elected Dorthea Robinson to lead them throu gh the maze of high school life. Following up were jerry Seely. vice-presidentg .loan Rumsey, secret aryg .Iohn Thorn, treasurerg and Donna hleary, rep- resentative-at-large. Each homeroom chose a lea der. Carol Schlonski, Martha Perrone and Bonnie Bradbury were elected first semester. For the sec ond semester Carol Schlonski and Martha llerrone were re-elected but Roger Digit took Bonnie lirad bury's place. ln the tall the seventh grade Citizenship lldu cation classes each spent a class period at the l.e- Roy llouse. lfveryone enjoyed this and learned a great deal about the way people lived in the times of early l,e Roy. Many seventh graders participa ted in junior high chorus and intermediate and -Iunior Rands. ln lfebruary, many of the seventh graders par ticipated in the -lunior-Hi assembly. This assembly was based on the Mickey Mouse Club television pro gram. Many seventh graders discovered a great deal of talent in their midst that day in particular. Un March 22, nearly all the grade turned out for a skating party. Towards the end of the year the seventh grade had a class picnic. liilled to the top with hot dogs, pop and potato chips all had a good time. The advisors thought that perhaps there was a contest among the boys to see who could eat the most. Laughing and singing brought the picnic and a wonderful year to a close. The seventh grade has successfully reached the end of one Dart of the maze of high school life. Best wishes to them as they continue. 4 at 92 tier-- .f flzc tlzwm' of Nw asxrm pu! Xkfith the help of our advisors we put on the Bop llop. a record dance. which was well attended and gave us the needed experience to put on even better dances in the future. The highlight of the year came when we were to put on the assmbly for the school. VVe chose a talent show and based it on the Mickey Mouse show on television. :Xlmost everyone in the eighth grade had a part' in the show and it was a very big success. XYe also had a lot of help from Nr. lrlillis and Mr. Taber. besides the help front our regular advisors. Our class was very active in the sports of the school. Our seventh and eighth grade team had a very successful season now they will have the basis for a good year next year on the .iunior Var- sity. O'Shea ROW 11 Mig Fmtmillel' -..ei gf, 55..- Qaaifzmen The Class of l960 entered high school with a burst of vitality and optimism, Our goal: to have a worthwhile and wonderful freshman year. Did we succeed? There may he some who disagree with us, but we think we did. Hur first step up the ladder of success was the election of capable leaders. Daniel O'Shea was chosen president, lames Xkoodrulif, vice-presidentg Rose Ann CYGeen, secretaryg and Christine Graney was elected treasurer. The climl, was to be a hard one, but we were fortunate to have such advisers as Mr. Dumont, Miss lfortmiller. and Nr. liurth to lean on, to keep us steady. and to make sure our footing was secure. Selling candy and pop at a stand set up in the corridor during basketball games was our next step. This activity meant many hours of work. but it was pleasant work and it helped fill our treasury. ln l3ecemher we decorated the gym with a shower of snowfiakes and held our first dance withan orchestra, The Snowflake Serenade. The gym was beautiful and the dance a financial and socialsuccess, QX haked food sale in liehruary proved very successful. Most of the customers were fellow freshmen, so the sale made for full class stomach as well as a fuller treasury. The ability and enthusiasm of the whole class was indicated by the number of freshmen boys who played on the ll. Y. football. basketball, and baseball teams and also hy the freshmen girls who were cheer- leaders. XTC even had a classmate on the varsity football squad. Now that we have passed the ninth rung of the ladder to the top. there is no looking back for us. Straight to the topl XYe only hope that the next three years hold as much happiness and enjoyment for us as the past year has held. aw, l ilurr t'o11fl11iiIt'v of niizfli f1I't!t174 l'S iizferfsfeti' in lfI'll71lI1ffI'.9 :mike filcznx for 11 rluaxr filav.
