Mr. l.ane has proven himself not only a helpful counselor and hard worker hut also a warm friend to the many members of the class of 356 who have come to know him personally. Although he is :perpetually busy with our bands and choruses, he has always managed to lind-time to lend a helping hand or a word of advice to our class and its members. lfle has a gilt for making us see the lighter side ol problems. and worl-ring with him or lor him has always seemed more play than drudgery. XXX- will not soon forget his helpful advice. humor, and eagerness to aid us, and so, with deep pride and fond memories of the years behind us, we dedicate this O-AT-KAN of 1956 to Mr. William T. Lane. feecaqnilian Marian A. Russell There are so many significant jobs in our school upon which one's attention is focused that we sometimes forget the im- portant behind-the-scenes toil without which l.e Roy High would cease to function. lt is for this reason that we wish to single out Mrs. Marian .-X. Russell and express our gratitude for the hours of work in which, for most of us. only the results are obvious. The class of '56 realizes it is such people that make l.e Roy the great school it is. Charles D. Graney, M. D. Richard C. Fitch The class ol 1956 takes pleasure in ex- pressing its appreciation to Mr. Richard C. Fitch for the nne job he has done during this, his lirst year as principal of l.e Roy High. ll'e feel that our senior year has been more enjoyable for his being here and we respect him for the capable way he has taken over the manifold responsibilities of his position. The class of '56 wishes Mr. Fitch continued success in his career at l.e Roy High School. in llffemoaiam The death of Dr. Charles D. tiraney in March of l956 was a great loss felt by both tlie l.e Roy Central Schools and the C0l'lll'lll1llltj' at large. During thirty of the lifty-three years he practiced medicine in l.c Roy. llr. Graney was a member of the Board of Education and for eight years he served as its president. ln addition he was school physician for twenty-seven years. Qmwmi liveryone has heard it said in his history classes many times, XVe live in an era of change. Any student at l.. lfl. S. can readily see this in our new equip- ment, a far cry from our school lO years ago. XYith this fact in mind the O-.Yli-KXX editors at their lirst meeting adopted the slogan, lt's time for a change. The yearhoolcs of the past were rigid little pieces of literature following a strict forin-ibut not any more. lf at first yon're a little confused talce heart: you prohahly have lots of com- pany. XYe editors of the O-,X'l1--KAN have not cut loose from tradition without reason though, and a quick study of the table of contents will give you a seasonal guide through this school year. eanfenld FALL SPRING ADMINlS'l'R.-XTION 8: FACUl.'l'Y GRADES 10 - ll Lfl.TS'l'ODlANS SENIOR PLAY GR.-XIJES l - 6 S'l'UDlfN'l' COUNCIL l'OO'l'l3Al,l. The seventh grade is not allowed hy student coun- cil to have many events during the year since we must get used to the whole new system. :ks we get older and are ahle to carry more responsibilities, we will have more events. Our first hig event was a skating party. .Xt this skating party each of us brought sandwiches and pop. l.ater in the year we had a skating party which was open to the whole school. XVe also held a program to which were invited our parents. Many of the seventh graders participated in the junior .High Talent Show. There was tumhling. singing ' . . s. and dancing. and some hoys were part ol a jazz hand. NYe have enjoyed this year at school and know we will enjoy the years ahead in l.e Roy lligh School ....... ij ii SQ E 'S Y 5 2 S WMWJMMWWM . 2 ,fl .vfmzfiy izand and iniwzsv CUIli't'HfI'4!ff0ll arf' among fllc ifzgrcdivufs 11rcc',s.m1jv in Ilzix xr1'v1zllz grmiv arf clczsg. z'VlIft'l' mlorx are om' of flu' IIIilll'X' J1lt't7lfl! flu' girls lwvozzzv fu'- qfzaivmui with. 'l':Iy1or, 'l'his year. as the class ot 1950 leaves its linal im- print in the history of l.e Roy High School, another class is beginning its upward march with character- istic vitality and spirit. Set with determination and aided hy the spirit of adventure, the freshman class has completed the lirst quarter of its iourney to- wards knowledge with great success-experience has added her sage advice to the wealth of this class. XYisdom guided the class of 1960 to entrust her leadership to very capahle hands: David Yicary acted as president, Larry Munt as vice-president, Kathy Dickinson as seeretarv. and 'loe l,app as treasurer. Not to he slighted in importance there were. of course. three wonderful advisors who gen- erously sacriliced their own time and energv for the good of the class. Mr. llumont, Mr. Kurth, and llflr. Harone should take a proud how for nmch- appreciated guidance. .Xction and enthusiasm seem to keynote this pro- gressive class. Not to he outdone hy the record ol its predecessors, the class ol' 1900 is well represent- ed in almost all phases ol our extracurricular pro- gram, Quite a nuniher of the lmoys have olifered their talents to the success of this season's junior varsity tootlmall. lmaskethall, and haselmall teams, and Kenny Brownell will he remembered as the lighting tackle who made the varsity in his hrst year. 'Vypi' cal of sports-minded freshman girls are liaren l.eit-- ner. llonna lleaman. and .lane Hovd, whose peppy cheerleading kept the junior varsity boys going even when the going was rough. Success seems to follow the class of 1960. :Xl- though they were allowed only a limited numlier of activities, the freshmen have seen to it that what they have done has heen done well. :X partial list ol' their triumphs include a well-managed refreshment stand, a wonderful dance named t'himney Sweep. and a lmaked lood sale. The Juniors XYltat a wonderful year this has been! Our .Iunior year in l.e Roy lligh School has held ex- periences galore. XYe have had David firiflitli, president: .Xllan Cohen, vice-president: Nancy llacltett. secretaryg and tiarol Nicholson, treasurer. riding at the helm of our class ship from the tirst day ol' school, way back in September. Our advisors, llliss llarrold and Nl r. llarrison. have always been present to set the sails straight. Naturally, we have tried to till our treasury and have been very sttcccsslul. Our Iirst major cruise was the .lunior l'rom held on November 23. XYe called it Midnight Mood and music was fur- nished by -lack l.a Raoux and his orchestra. The crew did a marvelous job oi keeping' everything' ship-shape. The handsome Icing and lovely queen were larry Reid and Sandra Halter. The class also held a baked food sale during the fall months. The next voyage was a round and square dance at Christmas time. It seems as though everyone was present at this dance. for it certainly was a success. Another time out of the port and we held the junior lirolic. lt toolq place in May. for after all. spring- time is the time for froliclcing. isn't it? Une big event for the juniors every year is Student Council nominations and elections. The nominees were :Xllan Cohen. Kathleen -lenner. David Griffith, Carol Nicholson, Hill tjraney and Sandra Halter. The team for next year is .-Xl Cohen as presi- dent and Carol Nicholson. vice-president. .-Xnother big event is the long' awaited appoint- ment into the National llonor Society. This year eight of our crew members were selected. They are Allan Cohen, .-Xnn Cromwell. David tirithtli, Kathleen -leuner, Sam Maloni. Polly Mills. C'aroI Nicholson, and l3arbara Shepard. This year the .luniors were in charge of the llolio Fund Drive in the high school. XYe collected money in the school for a week. and added the proceeds received from a record dance which we held in April. june was a busy month. We sponsored the annual ballet recital, june l and 2. This took a lot of hard work by all of the crew and once again the voyage was completed without any casualties. l.ast year the Class of 56 started something new. It was the giving of a commencement dance for the Seniors. To carry on this Fine idea. the Class of 57 held a dance on 'lune 9. NYC can't 'forget to mention the tree that we helped the seniors purchase to plant in front of the school. Xllowl This has been a busy year. NYe plan on having the list of activities grow longer by the time we graduate. Elected to carry the burden of leadership in the Junior Year were David Griffith, Presidentg Nancy Hackett, Secretaryg Allan Cohen, Vice-President and Carol Nicholson, Treasurer. The Junior Prom, held this year on November 23, is allways one of the high points of the schoolyear. This one was no exception. The winners of the annual contest for Icing and queen of the prom were Larry Reid and Sandra. Baker. At no time do any juniors work more feizerishly than do those candidates for Student Council ojices during elec- tion time. Here the six candidates--Sandra Baker, .Hill Graney, Kitsie Jenner, Allan Cohen, Carol Nicholson and Dave Griffith-rest between rounds. TheLP1ay's my 'P The Ushers I, - 2nd row: J. Spillcr, P. These members are elected at the beginning of the school year by each of the respective classes. livery class activity must be approved by a majority of the student council before it can go into effect. The president and vice president are elected in the spring of the previous year. However. they do not take office until the following year. The system of electing these oHicers is similar to the one used by our national government. ln the latter part of lllarch two conventions are held to choose the can- didates for the election. The entire student body is divided equally with half going to the gymnasium Sl'llllll'lZlt'. J, l':ltti and the other half going to the auditorium. The candidates for nomination who will have already been signed up are also divided into each convention. lfroni each of these conventions will be picked a presidential and a vice presidential candidate. 'l'he 'So yearbook was divided into four sections named after the seasons and each facet of school life was placed in its proper section. The business of picture taking presented a problem, for according to our thc-nie each photo- graph had to have a particular seasonal back- ground. You can bet that getting' some of the pic- tures to conform was a little rough. The major portion of the photographs for the yearbook were taken, developed and printed by Jerry Spiller under the guidance of Mrs. Russell. FIFTY-SIX One of the major events of the senior year is the posing fm' senior portraits, taken by a photographer from the Varden Studios. All the composition and pressworlc is done by the Gazette-News Publishing Company in Le Roy. Here Mr. Avery Perkzns shows proofs of the book to the executive staff. Subscriptions and advertisements proved to us that there is a lot more to selling than just saying, gimme lhfell, enough said. Look through your O-at-kan. If you like it or, heaven forbid, if you don't, tell next year's staffg they can use your sug- gestions, but don't call usg we've gone on to bigger and better boo boos. The Executive Staff would like to take this opportunity to thank their fellow seniors who work- ed so long under our lash. Special thanks to the rest of the staff Pauline Argana, Phoebe Call, Suzanne Crocker, .losie lannello, Don Nielson, Sonja Sehmelzle, Sylvia Scott, Nola Sheffer and ludy Shepard. The Varsity Sluggers The hasehall team struggled against two forces most ol' this year. The principal opponent was the weather which rained out game after game, forcing the team to play nearly every dar in late May. 'l'he second struggle occurred early in .Iune against flalctield in a game deciding the league championship. Roth Uaktield and l,e Roy had linished the regular season in a tie for tirst placeg and in the play-off game. in spite of a well-pitched game hy Satch O'Geen and tight fielding hy the rest of the squad, the boys lost l-0. The year was, however. a real successg the regular season record of 7 won and -l lost attests to this. ln addition prospects for next year look good indeed with Mr. il ay losing only four players through graduation and a highly successful .IV team to choose replacements from.
