OF 1954 GRACE ANN SYNIONDS Editor-in-Chief JUDD CROCKER Business M-anager EILEEN BLOOD Associate Editor Contents THE ADMINISTRATION THE SENIORS THE CLASSES THE GRADE SCHOOL THE ACTIVITIES THE ATHLETICS - THE ADVERTISERS - Foreword A diary is ordinarily equipped with lock and key to protect the intimate information which it might contain from the prying eyes of younger brothers, parents and overly inquisitive friends. The information which this composite diary contains, however, we are proud to present to public view. Here we have attempted to picture all our classmates and teachers, to preserve memories of those activities and events which have so filled our school years, and particularly this, our final year. This is a diary of our scholastic life and all the joys and sorrows, work and play which have filled that life. The O-AT-KAN staff sincerely hopes that each of you will read this diary carefully and thoughtfully and that it will serve as a permanent reminder to those who are leaving of the deep debt we owe our Alma Mater. We hope that those of you who have not yet attained graduation will be spurred to greater effort and a higher appreciation-of these things to which we so regretfully say good-by. Gziffney, Siupt. of Schools The Superintendent of Schools ln the l.e Roy Schools the teachers are often found giving tests to the pupils to see how well they are proceeding with their work. :Xt the end of each year the school itself is required to take a test to see whether its work has also been successful. The form of this test is to observe the lives of the graduates as they become citizens of our free society. If the graduates of l.e Roy are able to discipline themselves and to become good citizens doing useful work for the community, participating in our government and obeying its laws, then One of the most rarely seen persons in l.e Roy High is Mrs. Luttrell, Mr. Galfneys secretary. However, her job is not as slight as her appearances are few. Not only is she Mr. Galfney's secretary, but also acting clerk of the Board of Edu- cation and collector of school taxes. Mrs. Luttrell plays an important part in the operation of our school. the school has passed its test. 'l'herefore. it was with con- siderable trepidation that we began the last fateful year of our school career. XYe were to add our names among those illustrious groups which had gone before us and we were determined to establish a record which would equal and surpass any record set by a previous class. 'l'o head our class for this strategic task we chose Cal l.athan and Romey l.achnicht. XYe started our campaign with a round and square dance on September 18. Our next work was the selling of refreshments at the football games. Also during football season we staged the first all round dance of the year on October 2-lth. Then came our first record smasher on December 2. lt was the spaghetti supper. Through the efforts of every in- dividual in the class we had the largest turn- out ever at a senior supper. For the benefit of the whole school, the senior class put up a fifteen foot Xmas tree on the school lawn during the Yuletide sea- son. XYith the same purpose in mind, we The Class of 1954 sponsored a sportsmanship assembly program to promote better relations between l.e Roy High and neighboring schools, especially Ha- tavia. In late lfebruary the cast of the senior play was chosen and on April 2 and 3 presented over 1200 people with a wonderful evening of mystery. suspense, and comedy. Our next accomplishment was the senior ball. lt was set for May Sth and on that night many sparkling and neatly dressed couples enjoyed three hours of dancing with The Four Clefs orchestra. XYe finished the year with the delicious 'l'ountas supper and the unforgettable senior trip. XYith the completion of our senior year and high school life. we are regretful but very pleased with our four years of successfully working and playing together. XYe only hope that the future will bring more of the same and remember. A big success was the skating party we had this year, even though some got more than their share of bumps and bruises. Sports were another activity we participated in. We played these sports during the noon hour and in our free period on Friday. While some of us preferred gym on Friday, there was also Chorus in which we could take part, and which many did. W The O-at-kan Staff NYith pencils in hand, faces blank and minds in a turmoil, the 1954 O-A'l'-KAN staff began its long tedious task early in the fall. Under the very capable guidance of our advisor Mr. Cahill, we started planning the U-.X'l'-KAN. The num- ber of pages had to be computed: a list of the advertisers in l.e Roy and vicinity had to be com- piled. Hlith contracts in hand the advertising committee invaded the communities in the area. The final results were territic, topping the prev- ious years. Next came the photographiugg this was super- vised by Mrs. Russell. assisted by the camera club. Pictures of classes. class activities. organ- izations, and action picture were taken with won- derful results. liollowing this the U-.-YI'-li.-KN sales started with the capable leadership of Miss Moran as- sisted by Morris l'ickell and Gale Lytle. This too ended with results high above those of prev- ious classes. Under the leadership of Mrs. XX'illiamee the business classes tended to bills and out of town ads. They actually acted as the cor- respondence dept. of the O-.-Yl'-KAN. As an aftermath to planning the book. selling adver- tisements and subscriptions, came the job of writing the material for the yearbook. XYe, the l95-l O-.-YI'-KAN Staff, hope we have created a lasting impression that can never be driven away, and a yearbook which the Class of 54 will be proud of. All of this up-to-date news is made possible by the work of the ambitious members of the journalism class. During the first semes- ter these hopeful journalists use their class per- iods to write their interesting bits of news. The look of joy on a subscribers face when he reads lidilol'-X11-rlzivf Zuuzlvilo, Zim' from Ivff, Imzflx luv' lZI'ffl'S, Grace Ann S-vuzozzdx, fo-Vcc lJ,l'fIl!IIlt'I', and Her' Heyiuood in laying out an issue of llw Ned and Black. a copy of the lied and Black makes every mem- ber of the staff very proud. Since journalism is taught a half year only, the ex-members of this class must continue their work on the school newspaper during their study periods or outside of school. XYhere would the school be without the reliable staff? As a result of all the happiness and headaches of reporters, these students will have had the ex- perience aud training in the field of journalism and some will, one day in the future, be grate- ful that they had taken the challenge of being a reliable member of the Red and Black staff. In February the National Honor Society memhers hecame the envy of hoth students and teachers. This was due to the fact that they were lacing excused from school to attend a matinee of the famous musical Oklahoma', which was heing presented in Rochester. Other activities of the So:iety included more trips to Rochester for entertainment and the award- ing of the English l. awards. ln May, initiation services were again held and several more students hecame cligihle to wear the pin that signities an honor student. The Larkin Speaking Contest 'l'he l.arkin Speaking Contest was estab- lished through the interest and generosity of the late Vlll1tJlllZlS XY. l.arkin. for the purpose of giving students an opportunity to gain poise and conlidence in the art of public speaking. Originally, only -luniors and Seniors were eligible, but due to the new lfnglish program, students of speech class are required to try out for this contest. llowever, any interested junior or Senior may enter. lf an unusual amount of interest is shown and a great number of students wish to par- ticipate. eliminations are held. The partici- pants who coine through the preliniinaries then enter the tinal contest. ,ludges for this are chosen by the faculty advisor. Mr. Mc- liolzerts. The contestants are judged on both content and presentation of the material. The speeches of the contestants are alike in one respect. 'lihey generally deal with prob- lems currently in the public eye. XYith the aid of Mr. Mclloberts. the prospective orators select an appropriate subject and write an or- iginal speech on it. The l,arkin Speaking Contest is one ot' the many long standing traditions of l.e Roy lligh School. The play we presented was ap- propriately entitled Ten l.ittle Indians. This spine chilling murder mystery was a master- piece of suspense with comedy skilfully woven into it. The cast was well versed in their lines and their movements were perfected to the linest detail. The opening of the curtain gave many of the members of the cast their tirst experience with acting. They were met with a large genial audience both nights. They were well rewarded for their hard work hy the plaudits and applause of the audience. The people hack stage and all who helped in any way should he given a hardy well done. Everyone remembers the marching band and the time support they gave our football team at the home games this year. The marchers. wear- ing the traditional red and black uniforms, were lead by that snappy drum major, jimmy Rumsey and a row of eight sparkling majorettes. The majorettes were Carol Papke, JoAnn Battaglia, Edith Lightholder, Lucille Vinci. Shirley jack- son, Sheila Boothe, Barbara Clark and jean liossart. On Armistice Day the memorable par- ade was enlivened by the customary numbers played by the marching band combined with the concert hand. This year Murray Perkins, Marilyn Roth. Ed- ward Battaglia and Marie Argana went to Am- herst to another contest from which they brought fame to our dear old Alma Mater. The main highlight of the year was the pur- chasing of a shiny new tuba. The tuba section of the band has had to use old silver tubas which have begun to show the wear and tear of repeated use. The band put on the annual Spring Concert on Sunday, May sixteenth. lt has been the cus- tom since Mr. Lane came to l.e Roy to have the band accompany the choruses in this, the last public appearance of the year. It was hard to accomplish this task of accompanying because many of the band members were in the Choruses. Some of the selections rendered were XVonder- ful Copenhagenn and Thumbelina . 1,111 sure everyone enjoyed the performance just as much as the band enjoyed putting it on. ajorettes Loft to Right: J. Xliith no formality, hut with considerahle protest, they assume a somewhat vertical stance. This is the prelude to titty minutes of strenu- ous hut pleasurable singing. ln spite of wise cracks and otl'-key notes, the hoy's chorus has harmonized this year with considerahle success. They were well received at the Business Meuys lfoothall Banquet and at the VT.-X Upenhouse, Their entertainment at the Christmas concert was inspiring. To many students this means nothingg to those who are interested it means the beginning of hard prac- tice. Six girls from the freshman and sopho- more classes form the -lunior Varsity squad. From the junior and senior classes the Varsity are chosen. Once chosen, the two squads begin preparing themselves for the coming year. They too, like the football or basketball team, want to be in good condition for the opening game. Aside from hard practice which is neces- sary, there is a tremendous responsibility plac- ed on them. Once on the held or court, the spectators judge l.e Roy Central for the ac- tions they observe. Cheerleaders are not al- lowed many of the privileges most students have because of the uniform they wear. People judge the school and its students by the kind of leaders they choose to represent them. Junior Varsity I,-ll: I'. Ile-in-tti, G. l'lIlQIll'I'fll, L. Prac- ticing thoughtless and danger- ous driving habits is one good way to get a reputation for being immature. Drive to Stay Alive . . . Drive Carefully. INSURANCE weft owmefm' Son W. H. LUCAS C. H. THE MUNSON STREET BASIC RESEARCH LABORATORY of DUREZ PLASTICS Sc CHEMICALS, INC. PLANT AND GENERAL OFFICES NORTH TONAWANDA, NEW YORK Our Thanks To All VVhen we of the Senior Class of Le Roy Central Schools were Freshmen in 1951 and secured our copies of the O-At-Kan, we thought it was just a book that grew like Topsy, of Uncle Tom's Cabin story. Now as Seniors, responsible for adding another volume of our school annual to the lengthening row on the shelves and in the halls of memory, we have learned it takes hours of labor and oceans of cooperation on the part of teachers, students and friends in the industrial and merchandising field of the community, to bring to you the 1954 O-At-Kan. Vile believe this book is a reliection of the spirit of working, playing and living together that is characteristic of Le Roy and makes it a town of which we are truly proud. For your assistance in making The O-At-Kan possible, we thank you. Autographs
