Dramatics Club You hardly hear a word about the miners without hearing about the glam- our girls and boys who provided them with their theatrical entertainment. Although we here at LHS have theatrical entertainment of a somewhat different type, it is nevertheless centered around the doings of the Dramatics Club which is under the direction of Mr. McRoberts and Miss Smith. This year some of its members put on the play Three's a Crowd. Both performances were acclaimed huge successes. During the year the Dramatics Club has sponsored two theater trips. Last Fall a large number saw the Margaret XYebster production of MacBeth at Geneseo, During the winter a group also saw a New York troupe do High Button Shoes at the Auditorium at Rochester. Yes, many gold nuggets of culture certainly have been found by those students who have participated in this club's activities. -. 29 1 g X rs: Hwy.-mv, 'M-awp,-s. umm- . mrs.-f:1f-we2---f'.u'im -:ri ll--wi-'ff'V'-a-Z.75r f.L?Ii'ii1fZ lf'5YH'.. r4'.i-f f3':, ,' f ,FV3'? He gave to the audience ei b P .l e, in a very hne way some serious thoughts that they will not soon forget. Excellent performances were given by Don Cromwell as George Gibbs, Burton Spiller and Joyce Mooney as Dr. and Mrs Gibbs and by Don Mancuso and D, Clark who played Dr. and Mrs. llfebb. i For humor Mr. Xliilder added Mrs. Somes tBernice was never to be forgotten for her comments on what a lovely wedding it was, Then too there was Rebecca and her fondness for Seldenl who money. XYhile their's perhaps told of the activities of the miners and what was going on in other parts of our country, our Red and Black tells of the goings-on in l.e Roy School, and even sometimes includes an article by some well-known world ligure such as Madame Chiang Kai Sheli. This year the paper has been edited by Burton Spiller with the help of -ludy Stettinius and XYinona Brierley his co-editors. They have put out a very line paper and a big hand should go to the entire Red and Blacl: Stat? for a job well done. Seventh Row: 1', Utieen. A. I':n-e. M. A. l:lIV0llZl, V. ,XI'!.TllllZl. .I. XYe were sorely defeated by Caledonia on her own held, but we were not discouraged, The l-. H. S. eleven dug still deeper and eventually did win our first home game against Albion. Our mine did have treasure in it. XYe harvested a for- tune and won three more home games suffering defeat only from Batavia, a game always to be remembered in the Le Roy annals of football. XYe did not do so badly as we might have. XYe struck gold four times and missed it four. Nevertheless. our miners are well trained and next year expect to strike gold every time. They have, however, found the real value offered in the game of football. They have learned how to work as a team and know the value of sportsmanship. Indeed, this is as valuable as a gold coin. Seventeen times the drill was sunk and well over the majority of the times the team was successful. :Xmong the obstacles this year were the usual: Oaklielcl, Holley, Albion, Medina, fjluirch- ville, and the traditional Batavia. ln addition to these regulars, we met on the court Geneseo, Yorl-:, l.'erry. and NX'elister. The l'lase-Men showed Z1 great deal of ability this year and will be adequately prepared for next year. The team will sulfer rela- tively very few departures: Crnkovitch, Snyder, Spillane, and Smith, among them. The .lay-Yee team, as well as the Varsity, has been very well trained and shows promise of being l 44 a thoroughly successful squad of diggers in the future. On the Yarsity this season were a number of lower class-men who were good enough to join the crew and should undoubtedly be outstanding in the years they have before them, XYe all know the gold is there if only we work hard enough to get it. lt is very evident that Le- Roy shall achieve the maximum goal next year and the years to come under the expert instruction of Mr. Hase and Mr. Perrone. Junior Varsity Baseball Not only the men on the varsity have been digging this season. Also learning the trade, but perhaps with less glamour and attention, are the boys on the junior varsity crew. These hard-working young athletes have heen working just as hard as they can to be able to play as good ball next year as the older men have this year. .-X successful squad such as we have had this year is the result of a lot of hard work and training on the part of hoth the players and the instructors. The way to champion team lies only at the end of a long hard trail which leads through the all important period of tl. Y. apprenticeship. NYhat our boys are in the future depends largely on how hard they work now in the tender stages of education, not only on the ath- letic held but in any work or vocation, The most vital part of our lives is not the time at the end of the trail as it may seem. but the time when we are preparing for the future. The .lay-Yee boys realize this and they are making the most of the opportunity. Although they have not taken the two games played this year so far with Batavia, they have learned the most valuable lesson. Batavia? two victories, -l-1, and 13-2, have not broken our -lay-Vee's spirit and they look forward to a champion team in '5O. 9 . -' -, A -1 . Wa. My Stzmilingr: Mr. 3IIlI1gEfI'i1T2l, fC'o:ncl1J: R. There were gay decorations and presents for all. Room eight won the prize for the best -lunior High Decor- ations. Several of our boys are on the ,lunior High Bas- ketball Team. Many ol the girls were members of the Basketball and Volleyball teams that played during the noon hour. Our eighth grade chorus participated in the Spring Concert. lYe also have musicians in Junior and Senior Bands. Spanish has been added to our schedule. XYe're now one of the few schools in the state to have it in the Sth grade. e .-Xs for our dramatic ability. a group of us gave a play, Sweet Sixteenu, starring -lohn lenner. Lou- ise Byers, Mary Trumbore, 'lack Bradbury. Curtis Coral, and Francis Radley. This has been our second year in this wonderful school. and next year will be our tirst in the real High School. NYe know a lot more about LHS now and we feel prepared for next year. This has also been a happy year, and one we will not soon forget. 66 r..',.'..,-'Aw--.,.,, . ., . ,. .. L ' --W V Freshman Class We the Freshmen, the class of 52, at last can call ourselves full-fledged high school students. XYe now can learn the meanings of the strange words we have heard, such as Latin, Trig, Chemistry, and Algebra. :Xs freshmen we began our year by electing class officers. These were: President - Xkiilliam Scott, Yice-president 3 Robert Miggins, Secretary - Lois Handvside, Treasurer - XYilliam Kelly, Now that we were organized, we set out on our hrst big project selling popcorn and candy at the basketball games. This was fun and also protitable. lt is well known that the bands are one of the most interesting activities of the school, and it is only naturzil that about a quarter of Olll' class should lind their places in its ranks. Our twirlers added their bit while their classmates tried to keep the heat and blow it out for good old LHS. Our freshman dance, the Spring Thaw , was held March lgth. The class divided into four com-- mittees to make the plans. Mike l2llinghain's or- chestra provided the music which helped to make our tirst dance a success. l.ast llllt not least, we express Olll' thanks to o11r advisors, Mrs. Knoll and Miss Uphill. Secretary and Bob Lapp, Treasurer, but the fellows have proved themselves worthy of their offices. There is talent galore among us. There are many Sophomores in Senior Band and the Marching Band is led by our own Midge Roth. The -ltmior Var- sity team was ably supported by the ,lunior Cheer- leaders, tour ol whom were Sophomores. Two ol the girls, Annie lannello and Ursula Drayo, even made the Senior Cheerleading this year. A group of girls from the class gave a sample ot our speaking talent at the Sophomore Speaking Contest on April Sth. V 'We have a few actors in the class. too. Especially outstanding is Lois Lachnicht who has appeared in some ot the Dramatics Club productions. The boys have also shown themselves to be great athletes as well as class leaders, Donny Stevens and Dooner Milliman were among the high-scor- ing -lay-Yee basketball players. A number of our Sophomore boys are also on the baseball team this Spring. Even with all our extra-curricular activities, a number of Sophomore students have maintained high averages. XYe will remember the helpful ad-Y vice and guidance of Miss De Yoe and Mrs. Balmer who this year have helped us in our search for the gold nuggets of knowledge. Stettinius, Treasurer Junior Class Differing from the Seniors who are about to abandon a shaft of their gold-mine. when they leave in June, the class of 1950 has loads more gold dust to gather. Activities this year have shown a wealth of talent. The Larkin Speaking Contest found several -lun- iors competing for prizes and later those same stu- dents made a smashing success of a 'Socialized Medieinel' debate. The -lunior Prom went over well in spite of tra- ditions. They actually made money! December found us scurrying from house to house to sell Christmas decorations. This time we struck gold and our treasury increased by leaps and bounds. Our class also won the prize in the Chris'- nias decorations race. fl 7 rj 2 True gold is found in the hearts of these Juniors, when it comes to sports. Every one is either par- ticipating or out cheering. Every sport has more than its share of -luniors. Hard work. spirit and cooperation characterize each and every one of them. The music department is also well populated with juniors. Our soloists go to Amherst and to :Xil- State Bandsg not only do they go. but they come home with dying colors. More gold is discovered in the field of Journalism. The associate editors of the Red and Black come from our class. Reporters can be found everywhere around room 25. We are proud of each person in the class that has made himself a worthy member. Many thanks go out to our advisors, Mr. Babcock and Mr. Utter, who had a wealth of good advice and helped to speed us on our search for gold. 5..- f '12 t'i1.lf'2. . Oodles of money came from our concessions after games and by other means of support by our loyal troupe. HH. M. S. Pinafore was a hit with the help of three Sophs in the leads. Burt Spiiler was chief miner during the Sophomore year and did a Fine job in his guidance. XYho can forget Mrs. Balmer's wonderful and witty English courses when Connie Snyder was forever getting a from seat? Most of the .lunior cheerleaders consisted of Sophs. 1947--18: Miners off on third gold rush! A strike was made by the election of -lim Arrington as -lun- ior Class I'resident. Our class bought Christmas Seals instead of decorating our homeroom. Indeed our talented class cannot forget our oper- etta with -lim Arrington, Dick XYhiting, Ann Glea- son, and Mary Anne Rizzo as -luniors with leads. Bernice Selden's aid with the piano was excellent. In the Larkin Contest, -lim Arrington, and Dorothy Rita Maida held first honors. Our Llunior Prom was a hit. as usual, and so was our lirolic with Nancy Jones' famous art work as decorations. In sports, Connie Snyder starred on the basket- ball team. Cheerleaders consisted mostly of Iun- iors. Last Call! u nu 1 n 1 n nn o mnmmnn u nmuum J V948-1949: Miners hit the goal! Reaching our pot of gold we started our success off with Sam Panepento as Class President, and with Miss Bernard and Mr. Horr as Advisors. XYith our trip in mind, we boomed into our maga- zine drive and cards and wrappers for financial aid. Sam Panapento, leader of the miners. made it possi- ble for our night of fun with Pie Plant Pete. Our main objective following this was planning our pro- duction of Our Townl' in April. Following its success. we planned our trip to Xew York City and this is the memorable event which will always re- main with each Senior. -lim Arrington and -loyce Mooney led Student Council with Ann Gleason as Secretary, and Mary Anne Rizzo as Treasurer. These same people have led our teams on to victory for three years as Cheerleaders. XYe can't forget Sarah Tabone's fa- mous Spaghetti dinners. Bernice Seldenls famous keyboard talent and also the vocal works of Ann Gleason and Dick XYhiting. Through all our hardships and missions we find it impossible to forget our happy times, our accom- plishments and above all, the fun we have had in searching for the golden wisdom which our educa- tion has brought to us. -. .gli I4 FQ. .- , C ix ARRINGTON, JAMES - A great student leader who is bound to succeed in the future.
