Y. I B ba Ca , Editor Clarine M Business Manager Shirley Nlo El Clark, Associates Foreword Q., The Class of '48 has compared its high school career to a voyage, Cur Class has learned the ropes and weathered many storms together. Now we are nearing one port with our approaching gradu- ation but we hope these years have pre- pared us for the much longer voyage on the sea of life. Next year we will leave the familiar shores of home and sail into the un- known. XVhat we meet there we can not know. This 1948 Oatkan has attempted to picture our progress on the high seas of education. A 9 2 I be . XVe are only too proud to say that she boarded the ship with us when we began our voyage as Freshmen, but sorry to know that she will leave it with us when we go as Seniors. It will seem strange to visit the ship again and not hear her familiar Hello , but we all know that each one of ns will be warmly welcomed into her home as we always have been. O -. 4 .- xe .1 SK .. Recently. Le Roy experienced a great loss. with the death of one of New York's greatest philanthropists, Mr. Ernest L. XX'oodward. Mr. XYoodward was a great man. not only interested in this community and its welfare. but in the furthering of both public and higher education. ln his will Mr. XYoodward left to the library, in a trust fund, one hundred thousand dollars. a gift which will be gratefully appreciated by the future generations of Le Roy to come. -A 1 5 The library building is a heautilul addition to both the school canipus and the village. lt holds on its shelves a complete and up to date eolleetion of literature which is constantly being used hy the high school and XX'oleott Street students alike. The librarians. Bliss llurton and Bliss XYard are in great demand hy harried students who have an assignment to hand in the next period. They are also sought after hy those who want a good book they can read in a few days or so. Hur hats are off to these two people who are always so ready to help us. I if Meeting the Faculty any 1. Miss Kettle and Mrs, Knoll had been appointed as our class advisors and when it came to putting on our f'Freshman Fi-olic , we thanked our lucky stars that we had two people who really maneuvered us around and showed us the ropes. XVe gave it the special name of XYinter XYonderland and even went so far as to choose a Snow Queen. As far as we were concerned, the hand was practically built around the Freshman members. XYhy just think, Barb Fagan, a Freshman, was drum majorette for the whole band. Almost unbelievable! l 1945-46 Znd Leg of the VOYAGE lVe didn't set sail very readily in our Znd year, The only important event in September was our election of crew officers. The boys got the upper hand in this event, but that didn't keep the girls out of the running, for it happened that they gave forth with an all-girl speaking contest, Shirley Morris proved tops in this, But the music for this orator' exhibition certainly took the cake. lX'ho will ever forget Ringo Graham taking time out during his performance to look at his watch! Came May, it was only appropri- ate to have a May llance, May pole and all, and what's more we had -lim liorror's Ambassadors for music. A definite success , l946-47 .ird Leg of the YHYAGIC lVe are now upper crewmen! But still we envied the Seniors in Room 26, which to U5 -..gg MRs. KNOLL MR. BENNETT seemed a paradise where you could come in at any time and still not be counted late, Com- manding Officer. Grace Gelsomino, and advisors. Miss DeVoe and Mr, McRoberts. worked hard to bring us out on top deck, and that they did. Vfe even showed signs of making money. for we more than broke even on the big event of the year. the -lunior Prom. At our second big Shin- dig. the -lunior Frolic. we had a real country hoedown with round and square dancing to Happy Hammanls music. ln the Larkin Speaking Contest, the class of '43 walked all over the Seniors, with Peggy Munt taking first prize. - Now on to port. 19-L7-48 Port of Call! 3 Graduation XYe've finally come out on top deck with -lim Milne, Class President. Mrs.Knoll ,and Mr. Bennett Advisors. having done a top-notch job of guiding us home. It seems as if we've spent most of the year trying to think up ways to make money for our Senior trip. The magazine drive in September, cards and wrapping paper in October and Nov- ember, and then a slight breather to study for -lanuary exams, was the schedule for the first semester. As soon as those tests, tthose nec- essary evilsi were out of the way. the Senior Play got underway. After our talented pro- duction of Dear Ruth in March, came the big social event of the year, the Senior Ball. Having proved a bake sale an easy way to make money in November, we held another one in April to make some extra money for our trip. On April 22nd, we packed our bags, and. took off to New York. There is not one Senior tor chaperonei who will ever forget that memorable trip. and the fun we had. Land has been sighted, and soon we will be ashore. NYC will never forget our years in L. H. S., our many friends. successes and fail- ures, and most of all, the fun we have had weathering the storms together. im.-- ,, 1-15,53 wc-4. 'ZW 1, 4 ' '- 'l - - 1 - rlnnuuuenfmm-w,.v.-.,-...,. .,. NYC boast a mere one-third of the ship's band to sav nothing of the fact the choruses are practically built around the supreme voices of Dick lYhit- ing and Ann Gleason. lYe have great speaking ability in our class too, not forgetting that the lst Row: M. Xow people, will you please go back to the second score on page fifty-tive and begin on the third measure . says Miss Erickson. These are familiar words to everyone in both the boys and girls chorus. Our first days in chorus were quiteigay. but as the weeks sped by and Christ- mas approached we settled down to preparing a concert of Christmas music for the school. lt was a huge success and everyone enjoyed it. even the performers. Then all of a sudden we found ourselves in the midst of getting ready for the approaching operetta. Everyone agreed that Hits U' Blarney was one of the best operettas ever to be put on by the mixed chorus. If they had seen the rehearsals they might have wondered just how it was done, for the thirty-odd people who attended them every Monday and Xyerlnesday nights certainly had a lot of fun. Lines were sometimes forgotteng the groups of girls on the stage would forget to run out and tag jim Ar- rington. for a game of blind man's buff and everyone went into hysterics whenever Dick VVhiting appeared dressed up as a girl. He certainly was beautiful, all six foot-four of him. lint then there was a lot of work too: especi- ally for Miss lirickson, who patiently and with great skill, worked with us until Bits O' Blarney looked like a professional musical- show, Miss Rush worked hard linding cos- tumes, properties and making every one up on the night of the performance. lfrances lanita made a perfect l'eggy who had stolen all the girls' sweethearts away from them and Dick Xyhiting played poor l'atrick who wanted so much to have Peggy for his own. 'lim Arring- ton was old Mike U'Xoole who patched every- thing up in the end, and Ann Gleason played her part excellently as Mary, one of the broken- hearted girls. The catching tunes in the operetta were skillfully played hy liernice Selden, who certainly has done a wonderful job thzoughout the year. 'lihe chorus is now working hard on the coni- ing spring concert. Soloists are memorizing lnusic and everyone is humming the songs that resound through the halls during practices. It is truly hoped that this will be as successful as our past performances. 51 ++- fx: Scuttlebutting fe-I E W f' 2 ' W f g.- wg. 1 fiiig -,Jw 1 1,4 4,755 .M 3- 1' 3555 Lf 1 Sent:-'nl -Y J. Those weeks saw a lot of hard work, but they also saw a lot of fun. Mr. Mc- Roberts had a grand time giving the cast point- ers on kissing, and the clinches really looked quite professional. In fact one was so good that Judy forgot to stop it with her lines: she was so busy taking it all in. And poor june- it took a lot of practice before she could prop- erly jump into Leonard's arms. Dress rehearsal rolled around, the first time we had rehearsal with all the properties. plus an audience of three people. The play was A'Dear Ruth, one of the most popular comedy hits of modern times. written by Norman Krasna and presented under the direction of Mr. McRoberts. XX hen you go around depicting life as a sea voyage, after awhile you actually begin to feel a bit seasick. No wonder so many of the Seniors have that nauseated look. Last spring when the newly chosen editors were notitied of their honored positions, they seemed to think everything was rosy. How important they felt choosing their staffs. Big plans were made to get the Uatkan material underway and done on time for once. ln the fall, we were fortunate in securing the photographer early in September when he tand wel were in a good humor. lfor two days, frenzied Seniors could be seen rushing from here to there rearranging the schedule or getting pleased students out of a hated class. Any perl sons not suffering from flat feet after those two days, certainly didn't know what they were missing. ljictures came back and then the job ot indentitication began. During the winter, hibernation took place and not much work was done, but the whole student -. gif body was suddenly awakened when spring seemed in the air. by the harmonious Q Fj strains of 'lim Borror and his Philadelphia Flatboys singing loud praises of the Oatkan and its virtues. The next few weeks consisted of homeroom representatives nagging the kids to bring their payments. .ludy Ballard had a bad case of writer's cramp after she finished making out all the receipts. NYork really got underway after that. XYriteups began to take shape tafter Mr. Fred- erick practically stuck reyolvers in our ribsl and various pictures could be seen floating around between the staff members. Proofreadingl' and editing became the two big words for a while, and the sudden cases of cross-eyed-ness may be explained by them. Also those girls with the fingers worn down to the joints can give you a very gruesome outline as to their plight. While all this work was going on, -lim Borror and his staff were out collecting ads. L. t':il1. Ii. Ilraulbury, F. Davis, E, Vlnrk. One day about the middle ot October, ten puzzled students gathered in Room l. There they learned that Mr. Gaffney was planning to organize the Red Key Society, with Service Above-Self as the motto, the purpose of the society being. to unite students who have given their services to worthy school projects not other-wise recognized by Student Council. The ship's activities could not very well be carried on to any extent if it were not for the majority of these people. Barb Carr and Russ lannello, officers of Student Council, have given a great deal of their time to all sorts of school activities this year. At most any time, one or the other of them may be seen hnstling with a notice or dashing frantically to make last minute arrangements for the bus trip to the basketball game. You may not know it, but .-Xgnes Larli did the job ol collecting absence slips every morning and noon. This is a job which not many would care to have, for it consists of strenuously rac- ing up and down stairs and for most of us that is hard work so early in the morning. Talk about being served from a silver platter, you get just about the same quality of service from the lunchroom workers. Along with this also comes dessert. with Margaret Cavey and Betty Hutchinson selling candy and ice cream every noon. Then there are the locker room watchers , giving up their study periods to take care of the locker rooms. XYhen you go into assembly and the movie projector is efficiently run, that means that ,lim l7el.ong is on the job. Also there is Charlie Cordaro who runs the juke box every noon. Ann Gleason, who teaches the seventh and eighth graders dancing lessons after school, Frankie Davis who was on the job as football manager, Dean Burrell who was basket-ball manager. and a host of others always ready to aid you, keeping in mind the slogan. service above self. ,,.,7f iw..- tf 41 -W--Y Y -in Honoring the Worthy .-Xs cyery gootl ship has :t tlt-stinaition. so tlocs ticlsoutiiio, llichztrtl tirxtltztin, Klztrgztrt-1 .xllll lx Roy High School. lt is sct :tccortling to tht- Xlunt :intl ,Xnn Hlntstt-tl. goals of the National llonor Socit-ty: cltztrztctcr. scholarship. lczttlcrslup :intl st-iyicc which :irc :ilso thc linsis tor nicntlicrship in tht- Xcttiouztl llonor Socicty. There was little money left in the treasury after Student Council helped pay for the new cheer-leaders' uniforms, so plans were made to sponsor a baked goods sale, which resulted in increasing the treasury by 350, Of course there was the annual Snalce Dance held before the Batavia game, which coming at the same time as Hollowe'en, became a double celebration. Cider and donuts were served bv Rotary, with dancing in the gym to Al i.uther s orchestra. The advisors, Mrs. Balmer, Mr. Horr, and Mr. Bennett have helped develop Student -, .gif E. Grant, Ir. Graihann, R. Hutchison. 62 Council into, a progressive Organization. Prob- ably this years most important decision was the change in the athletic L's. It was decided that the L's would have the emblems on them to show in which sport they had been won. In March any visitor coming to L.H.S. might have been slightly puzzled to see the many posters and banners being sported in the halls and classrooms. It was the annual campaign for the election of new Student Council ofhcers An assembly with skits and speech-making pre- ceded Election Day and it was the student's privilege to cast their votes in the new voting machine. After a nerve-wracking weekend the results published in the Red and Black were: jim Arrington, President and Joyce Mooney, Vice-President. Now with the year coming to a close it is sincerely hoped that next year's student Council will be as successful a guide to the good ship, l..H.S. as this year's has been . . . . gg..- S. l l w . -,Mn W X' x-4+ - - Dancing at L. Freshman will have green suits, Sophomores maroon, -luniors coral. and the Seniors wear the same blue ones. You are to have them in two weeks and everyone he prepared to do your best in my gym classes. said Dorothy Morley who served her first year teaching at Le Roy. She has accompolished a great deal in the gym classes and has proven her ability to get along with everyone. The G. A. A. under the leadership of Sara Tabone, Presidentg Mary Ann Rizzo. Yice Presidentg blune Rogers, Secretaryg and Rachel Drayo. Treasurer has also proven itself to be a great aid to the girls and Miss Morley. The year started out with a playday at Batavia. Le Roy proved to everyone that there were some good swimmers here. Soccer intramurals started next. Teams were chosen and great rivalry took place among the players. ll'henever it was possible to get the football players oft the held we played soccer. So soccer intramnrals came to a close. Frances lanita's team, the lYhite Socks , won the championship. The ll'hite Socks played Alexander's winning soccer team. Le Roy won 2-1. This surely was a great day for the soccer team to know the winning light was kept burn- ing. The ninth and tenth grade soccer team tied Batavia and beat Medina in November. Volleyball was our next project to be under- taken in class. Volleyball intramural compe- tition became very keen. At Batavia the t'Yolley OOps captained by Sara Tabone ended the volleyball intramnrals by dropping a close de- cision to Batavia. Basketball showed everyone what great ability the girls had. The girls were as good as the boys this year. At the Medina basketball sports- day the Le Roy girls won one and lost a close decision. Frannie lanita,s basketball team won the intramural championship. You boys should see what fun we had in our gym classes learning how to square dance. Half of the girls pretended to be boys. and what a mix up took place. However, order came out of the chaos, and we really became just about as good as the old hands. -Jil lite-- -.......L..-,....a... 1 41 ! l Y! Va.
