Arden Siebens. Joyce Kammerer, Elaine Hansen. 'Free Men, The Drama of Democracy, was the thrllling story of free men in Americfn democracy. This elaborate, annual patriotic pageant was told in music and drama tg a laige audience on Friday, Nowember 13. The pageant was dire' ted by a group of six faculty members under the leader- ihip of Superintendent Harvey N. Kluckhohn and employed a cast of approximately -00 boys and girls from grade.. seven to twelve inclusive. It was dixided into fifteen J '9flGS wh.ch portrayed tha part played by education in the development and jreseivaticn of the democratic way of li-e. The pageant was prepared by the National Music Education Lcnference and was first presented at the national convention of this group. Partivipatinv in the project were the high school mixed chorus the boys' and girls' glee clubs. the junior high special chorus, a drum and bugle corps, four lramatic groups. two dance groups. and several pantomime groups. Two general ziarratois and a choral speaking group carried the descriptive parts which tied the '.'arious scenes of the pageant together. The program was brought to a close by the sii ing of he famous 'Ballad for Americans' by the high school mixed chorus. This Ballad fer Americans. originally made famous by Paul Robeson. brought a spectacular climax to the inspiring page-ant. It portrayed a cross section of the American way of life in a vivid and dramatic manner.
