A dual match with Chickasha was never played because of wet weather, however, the team did itself proud in the Four- State tournament held at Tulsa. They played against the best teams but were taken out in the early rounds. The team of girls with Herwana Squad Harrourf playing singles and Betty Dunn, the girls' president, playing doubles with Margabel Lund accom- panied the boys' team of Charles Avera, Bobby Gower, Benny Allen, and Bill Dixon to the state tournament at Oklahoma University. Though HarrouH, Avera, and Gower were put out in early rounds in the singles, the doubles team went out to make history for Lawton and also for the ancient tournament. Betty Dunn and Margabel Lund advanced to the final round of the girls' doubles before being dropped by a team from Chicltasha, This kind of play- ing was nothing new to these girls, because they have been playing top-notch tennis since they were in Iunior High. The boys' doubles teams composed of Avera and Allen, and Gower and Dixon proved to be surprises of the meet. Both teams advanced to the semi- Finals, making the First time in the history of the tournament that one school had two teams in the late rounds. This was also the First time a boys' tennis team from Lawton went as far as the semi-finals. With a second in urls' doubles the Lawton High netters placed third in the meet, scoring behinf Chickasha, first and Tulsa Central, second. This year the society consists of 66 members chosen from the upper ten per cent of the scholastic averages of the entire high school. Entering her third year as sponsor of this organization is Mrs. Lameda Robertson, language instructor, Officers of the society for the past vear were George Viney, president, Lcva iviae Cameron. vice-president, and Marjorie Shope, secretary-treasurer. VERLE IVIEADE, Director AJ Delving into a gay and hilarious comedy this year, the senior class of '42 presented Room Service as its annual class la Presented February 16 this play written by Iohn Murray and Allen Boretz won the applause of the entire audience. ' d d th of P Y' - r . The actors presented their roles as veterans, their timing was perfect, and they produced a play that was, in ee , wor y being called a success. Using a cast of students as characters, this was the first time K'Room Service had been presented in an Oklahoma high school since its release from Broadway a few years ago. Having an ambition to present a play he had partly purchased from a small town playright, Gorden Miller, played by Donald McKinney, worked toward the goal of seeing his play dramatized on the stage of a Broadway theater. Direct- ing the play'was Harry Binion portrayed by Iimmie Morrison and chosen for the leading lady in the play, Godspeed, was Christine Marlowe by Carole Childs. i i ' ' ' ' ' ' bl sent this Onl with the splendid supervision and brilliant direction of Nir. Many of them appearing on the stage for the Hrst time, the juniors led the people in the audience into the lives of the characters in the play, leaving them thrilled by such splendid acting. The action of the play took place in the home of johnny Clover. ln his old nursery made over into an office, Iohnny, played by Robert Pierson, became the editor of the school paper, the Penguin With lvlary Hope Boyette in the role of Susan Blake, his girl friend, Iohnny went through all the problems and worries of an editor. Supported by a cast of outstanding players, the play was one that will be remembered by all who saw it. After johnny and Spud became sick with the measles, Susan took over the job as editor with the result that she nearly had the whole staff arrested for own- ing an illegal pin ball machine. Due to the good misfortune of Susan's making a mistake while editing, Henry Quinn married Martha Willard, the journalism instructor of the school. Under the able direction of Mr. Verle Meade, the juniors became ardent actors, each giving everything he could to- ward the success of the play. To Mr. Meade the junior class shows all their appreciation for his fine direction. The list of characters were: Mrs. Clover, Marydel Miller, johnny Clover, Robert Craig Pierson, Nlr.
