NX Administration xii ii Guiding the youth of Lawton through the proper channels of eelucation is rlit- joh which occupies the time OfSL1PCl'lIlfCIlLlL'Ill B. C. Swinncy. He believes that Youth faces the great- est decisions of life within the ten scars following high school graduation-a vof cation, marriage, a home, religion, recrea- tion-so he anti aitics worlt to accomplish this. His friendly disposition and ahilitx' to cooperate with his mans' to-workers mal-:es this very big undertaking a pleas- ant taslt. QZ D 1 w I Superintendent B. C, Swinney Ami Secretary Routb Kem1'a1l. Faculty Preparing seven hundred students ri year for accomplishments in atlulthootl and in college work is the job undertaken by our faculty members. Few students realize the work anrl preparation connected with the fulfillment of this task. Every facultv member has helped make this year a successful one, they have instructed us in the knowledge of our texts, human relationship, and discipline. We salute our instructors, and deeply express our gratitude to them as loyal directors. Principal D. A. Becker. 741 O11 s.. . 5 Q' 23' Year after year Daniel Becker signs his ruling DAB to millions of slips. Not only does his signature aid the student body but his wise council lifts the spirits of those who confer with him. Through the doors of his office pass many troubles clispelled by the kindly advice so timely given to those who enter. Ending his twentieth year as prin- cipal of Lawton high school, Becker still holds his title of fairness and friendliness to every student. He now awaits the progress of time to further aid the underclassmen. IOHN RODGERS XIISS VANIVI-A LEE IJIJIHIIIKII 4 lafucallon Iourmzliym C amrneuml English XIRS. So, with the aid of the various class officers and Mrs. Leslie Howard, the Wolverettes, girls' pep organization, was formed. Ten girls from each class were selected for the club. They were chosen for pep and personality. A standard uniform was chosen-red and white jackets and white pleated skirts. VVhcn a group of the members graduated, ten new members were chosen from the sophomore class to take their places. This year marks the graduation of the last of the charter members of the VVolverettes, the class of y4I. '41, Contestants 'Qur Town JUNIOR CLASS PLAY Directed by Mrs. Leslie Howard by Thornton Wilder Delving into serious drania, the junior class, with aid of the capable hffrs. Leslie Howard, director, presented 'iOur Towni' February 13, 1941. lt will be renieinbered by those who saw it as one of the most unusual, most intensely interest- ing productions ever presented on the Lawton high school stage. The Iuniors handled their roles like veterans. All of their action was pantomime for there were only a few pieces of equip- ment. Yet, members of tl1e audience felt as if they could actually see the lacking properties. Also to be commended for their work are the members of the production staff, those peo- ple behind the scenes who make the play run smoothly, who change the scenery between scenes and who, as in Cut Townf' must suggest much of the setting by the various lights used. ln the first act the author, Thornton Wilder, genially out- lined the history of the town, Grover's Corners, New Hamp- shire, and something of the character of its citizens. Then the audience was carried into the homes of the Gibbs and Webb families, substantial folks. The scene opened at breakfast rin1e and a whole day in the two homes was enacted. The second act concerned the love affair between young George Gibbs and little Emily Webb, which culminated in a 3 is ,gum 1 xr , , 99 moving wedding scene, which contained all those elements of poignant sorrow and abundant happiness that make for solem- nity and impressiveness. ln the third act, the audience was led to the cemetery on tl1e hill, where many of the townspeople, who had been intro- duced during the first two acts, were patiently and sniilingly awaiting not judgment but greater understanding. lnto their midst was led the bride, a little timid at hrst, a little wish- ful to go back to life, to live again with her memories. But she was shown how impossible, how futile it was to return. The past could not be relived. Living people, humans, occupations and small thoughts, know little of true joy or happiness. Truth is to be found only in the future. The characters in order of their appearance were Francis Martin, '41, stage manager, Vesper fvlillspaugh, Dr. Gibbs, Bobby Williams, loe Crowell, Earle liountain, Howie New- some, Martha Russell, Mrs. Gibbs, Barbara fwfclntosh, Mrs. Webb, lack Darling, George Gibbs, Coleen Ludrick, Rebecca, Mary' Ellen Mitchell, Emily Vlfebb, Allen Lawrence, Professor XVillard, Lacev Hollev, hir, VVebb, Gale Redeker, woman in the balcony, Mort Bowman, man in the audience, Betty lune Loud, woman in the audience, limmv Cash, Simon Stimson, Margaret Pierce, hits, Soames, Mike Iones, Constable Warreii, Buddy, Si Crowell, George Viney, Iimmy Parks, and Don Elle- good, baseball players, VValter Cox, Sam Craig, Fred Larrance, Ioe Stoddard, Betty Lusk, Shirley Shepler, Mary Black, Carol Childs, Wayne Frakes, Gladys Hope Stot- hard, Choir, Katherine Allen, Myrtle Lan- man, Earl Newton, Betty McConley', people of the town. This play, written by the incomparable Edna Ferber and George S. Kaufman, was unlike any ever presented in Lawton high school before. It was not a story of People and their actions but was a study of their character and the underlying qualities which go to make up the opposite types of girls. The action took place in the Footlights club in New York City, The club was an old brownstone mansion which had been converted into a boarding house for actresses. The girls in this club all had ambitions to go on the stage. One gave up and got married, but came back later, another went into the movies, and another ended her life, jobless and They were all different types, ranging from disillusioned. Terry Randall, a girl with her heart and soul in the theatre, to Olga Brandt, a disheartcned and unsuccessful Russian pianist. Kits. Orcutt, the owner of the boarding house, acted like a mother to all of the girls, and was heartbroken when any of Uher girls were downhearted. Terry, the real actress of the group, Hnally got her chance through the efforts of a friend David Kingsley, a producer. Under the able direction of Mrs. Leslie Howard the seniors won great acclaim with the production of this difficult drama which consisted of three acts and six scenes.
