EDUCATION OKLAHOMA HONOR SOCIETY Wise Guys O Traditional is the honor given those whose intelli- gence makes them outstanding. In Lawton high school, students whose averages are the upper ten per cent of the grade rankings make up a society of their own, a local chapter of the state-wide Oklahoma Honor Society. These wise guys are annually selected by their averages for a whole year, this year the last semester of the year '38-'39 and the first semester of the year '39-'-10. Smart- est ot' the smarties this year was studious sophomore Allen Lawrence, who carries five subjects besides being a Fang member. His year's average was 95.89, but following close were Mary Evelyn Smith, junior, with 95.87. and Oza Mae Christmas, senior, with 95.85. Twenty-hundredths ot' a point lower ranked Oscar Heu- ser. senior, who led the previous two consecutive years. Yearly sponsors of a 2625 scholarship award to the top grade ranking junior, the honor society last year presented its award to Heuser. This year the scholar- ship will be given to the top ranking junior at the commencement proceedings for the seniors. A surprise award, no one knows till the time of presentation who has captured the honor. rl' President June Shugg , the .ffirrlw in rf l'Vrl1JIry, fllilorv Leading the honor society in its activities this year were chemistry shark June Shugg. president: business- man Selwyn Lacik, vice-president: modest, straight-A student Oza Mae Christmas, secretary-treasurer. New Deal 0 Determined to publish a real yearbook for Lawton high school in 1940, a group of persever- ing seniors led by Robert Vann, Oscar Heuser, Charles Clay early during the summer of 19359 began planning a campaign for the publication of a real book-shape, printed annual. Aided only by their enthusiasm and spirit they worked till they gained their first goal-- permission to investigate for a new deal on yearbooks. 517 f Others joined the cause with equal vigor and finally the lithograph process was decided upon. In 19319 a little over 100 yearbooks of the mimeoizraphed type were sold. After an exten- sive campaign in 1940, 275 copies of the '40 Wolverine Lore were printed and half a hundred other students were disappointed because they failed to take advantage of the opportunity to buy before the limited number were sold. But about that time a man with a strong will and a de- termination to make it a good one came along. This will has carried them through and now the boys in Lawton high school's boys' band can toot their own horns because their band is the leading high school band in the Southwest. VERNON PURCELL VT: Ii 47- FOCDT Conquerors O Slow starting with an inexperienced eleven the Lawton high school Wolverines continued through their season to pile up an imposing list of wins and thrilling games. Fnst game Lawton 13 Pauls Valley 7 was slow but the second game came out: Lawton 1 Classen 6 in a real thriller. Lawton went Lion hunting on Sept. 29 and picked off the Durant Lions in a hard- fought 13 to 0 game Played in Hollis terri- tory a great deal of the time, the Lawton- Hollis contest came out 0 to 8 with the Wol- veiines lacking the final punch to put the ball across. Chickasha caught Lawton on the rebound and suffered the consequences, the game ending on the Chickasha one-yard line Lawton 19 Chicks 0. The flashy Anadaiko Warriors were downed by a fumbling Wolverine team 7-0 who went ahead to defeat Purcell 28 to 0 in an easy game. Riding rough-shod over the Duncan Demons by a score of 12 to 6, the Wolverines emerged champions of the East- ern Division of the Southern Twin Six Con- ference. 9 J.C. BYRD L 9 TONY SUNIPTEPM9 BARRETT l ANDREWS l TR GEORGE HUGHES -:raw Ch BALL Next came the Walters Blue Devils who were downed 25 to 0 by the Wolverines' fast ground plays and classy aerial attack. Tak- ing on Northwest Conference players the Woodward Boomers, the Lawton eleven sent them packing home by a score of 47 to 0. The tide changed on Thanksgiving day, the Wol- verines going down to a stinging defeat at the hands of the Altus Bulldogs. The Bull- dogs grabbed the bone 19 to 6 using to an advantage their brilliant passing attack. The Lawton Wolverines m e t their Waterloo in their last game of the season- the Hollis-Lawton Southern Twin Six con- ference playoff. Evenly matched, the Hollis Tigers got the breaks and came out ahead 3 to 0. Lawton's brilliant season was somewhat punctured by the state athletic association's ruling of incligibility causing the forfeiture of all except the first three games and the Wolverines' prohibition from playing until Nov. 1, 1940. Sparked by their captain, signal caller, and all-state man Vernon Purcell, the Wolverines piled up T9 points to their oppon- ents 19 in conference games.
