L 5LC 1963 1963 REFLECTOR LAWTON COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL LAWTON, MICHIGAN VOLUME V DEDICATION The 1963 edition of the Reflector is respectfully dedicated to Mrs. Mary Staley Bro ' wn, who this year retires after twenty-three years of service in the Lawton School system. Most of us think of Mrs. Brown as an English and Latin teacher only. However, earlier she taught gym, history, geography, and junior high classes wherever she was needed. As the school system grew and more teachers were hired, Mrs. Brown took additional train- ing to qualify herself as our school librarian. She has willingly spent hours selecting and cataloging enjoyable and helpful books for our use until now Lawton High School has one of the best libraries in the area. This past year, Mrs. Brown has set up and maintained an efficient library fro the elementary students in the new building. Mrs. Brown has also kept herself busy with extracurricular activities. This year she organized the Dramatics Club, which under her direction, entertained the student body with two one-act plays. Over the years, she has been class advisor to many classes, and through directing plays and chaperoning activities such as dances and proms, she has given the students an opportunity to become well acquainted with her as a person, as well as a classroom teacher. Last year Mrs. Brown ' s years of devoted service were acknowledged when our newly- formed Honor Society named its local chapter in her honor. The Reflector Staff proudly adds to that recognition the tribute of this dedication. IN APPRECATION Mr. Clifford Seppala. who started his teaching career at Lawton in the fall of 1Q54, has contributed a great deal to our school. He has built up the business department to its present level; he was class advisor for the Class of 1958; he has been president of the teacher ' s club; and he has acted as advisor to the Yearbook Staff. Since the first Reflector was published in 1959. Mr. Seppala has worked hard with each staff to present a complete collection of the junior high and high school students and their activities. Always willing, he has lent a helping hand to anyone with a problem. It is the priv- ilege of this staff to acknowledge the effort displayed by Mr. Seppala in preparing our Reflector for the year 1963. To him, we of the staff express our most sincere thank- you. ADMINISTRATION ADMINISTRATION Charles R. Gibson Superintendent Robert Arends Principal SCHOOL BOARD Dr. A. E. Parks, Trustee; Roger Weurding, Trustee; Glen oe ' o r ' , Trustee; Phillip Hissong. President; Chester Wright, Trustee; Owen Bray, Treasurer; Arden Ewing. Secretary. This year saw the successful completion of its addition to the elementary school and the re- modeling of the high school building. In addition, a new parking lot was constructed in front of the high school which would accommodate more than 70 automobiles. When Mr. Gibson decided to step down from his position as Superintendent, the school board had to meet many nights a week to interview possible candidates and visit towns to interview people to make sure their choice was the right one. Finally Mr. Glen Secor was hired. A full time art teacher was hired. In addition television was utilized in some of the classes as a teaching aid. rii V I FACULTY FACULTY MR. As we grow older we remember the patience and understanding our grade school teachers showed to us when we were mischievous little demons. They worked hard to teach us reading, writing, simple arithmetic, and English. We will always appreciate the efforts they have displayed and continue to display in their difficult task of educa- tion. SECRETARY BOOKKEEPER psj ffll S?; H i Wr fci liiS ! ' B B 1 Miss Doris McKnight Mr. Howard Paulsen COOKS FRIENDS Mrs. Betty Shaver and Mrs. Ver Hitchcock Two of the most important people we have known throughout our school years have been the cooks. Arriving early in the morning and working until after two in the afternoon, they have served us meals which were not only well-balanced, but delicious. In the opinion of the student body, we have been fortunate to have the best cooks away from home th at can be found anywhere . Little recogniti ' in is given to the bus drivers for the wonderful job they perform. Besides their daily work, they are always willing to drive for the many school activities such as ball games and trips throughout the year. Without their patience and cheer- fulness, riding the bus would become a very disheartening experience for many students. To become a member of the National Honor Society, one must have attained a B or better average in high school up to the time he is a Junior when he will be ad- mitted into the society. After admittance he must maintain this average. If the aver- age drops for one six weeks period, he will be required to raise his marks for the next marking period or be dropped from the organization. The Honor Society has many special advantages including field trips to the Civic, honor roll parties, projects which work for piihlic welfare, and special recog- nition at graduation. At this time we have only one male in our society; but since it is still only a young organization, we are confident both boys and girls will be inspired to work harder so they can share the special benefits of this group. The elementary and high school choirs presented jointly the Christmas concert. Again at the Easter Religious program, the choir sang Seven Last Words. To conclude the year the choir sang at the Baccalaureate Service. This year ' s choir of fifty-tw o members was one of the largest choirs Lawton has had for many years. It has done a wonderful job and we hope its success will continue in the years to follow. FOOTLOOSE FOOTLOOSE was the story of four teen-agers who were left home with only their maid to look after them while their parents went abroad. The brothers and sisters had to make some difficult decisions but in the end everything finally worked out for the best. The Senior Class had only four weeks of rehearsal instead of the usual six or seven but they did a fine job through hard work and careful study. Just like the plot in the play the presentation turned out for the best. BACKSTAGE Rehearsal? ? ? ? ? McLke-up Time ! JUNIOR-SENIOR PROM SENIOR TRIP WE ' RE OFF ! MONEY TO BURN! FIRST STOP! Bright and early Friday morning on June 24, the Senior Class climbed on a bus and left for a long day in Chicago. The first stop was the Glass House where we changed and ate breakfast. After riding hobby horses and buying lollipops, we re- entered our bus and drove down busy Calumet Expressway to O ' Hare Airport. While at O ' Hare, we were fortunate to have a guided tour arranged by Mr. Ray Wanink through a big Boeing Jetliner. From the observation deck we watched the planes land and take-off. When we finally left O ' Hare, everyone had illusions of be- coming either pilots or stewardesses. After eating lunch at Howard Johnson ' s, we visited Maxwell Street and then drove to the Loop and rented a room in the Harrison Hotel. Almost everyone spent his free time on State Street. At 6:30 we met back at the hotel to change clothes for a boat trip on Leike Michigan. When we came back damp and sea-sick, our spirits were low but were soon returned at the prospect of a trip on the subway to Riverview Amusement Park. We returned to the hotel by 1:00 A.M. tired but happy and once more got on the bus for the return trip home. Lawton never looked better to thirty-one seniors than it did when we finally arrived home at 4:30 Saturday morning. WATCH THOSE PLANES TAKE OFF ! IT ' S BEEN A LONG HARD DAY ! HOME AT LAST! SENIOR BOAT TRIP LOOK AT THAT SKYLINE! YES ITS COLD ' WAITING FOR CHAPERONES? ! SO WE CAN LEAVE HOTEL LOBBY LAWTON ' S PEP TEAM PLAY BALL BOYS ! AND GIRLS PEP SKIT CLASS DAY II I.I.UII in m . TPIESE ARE GRADUATES? Each year an hour is dedicated to the graduating class who present a program consisting of water pistols, bean shooters, and silly antics. It is presented on stage in the gym and is observed with humor by the student body, but with dismay by the teachers . The fun and frolic begins with a little history which introduces each member of the class by some character or prank for which he is kn own. The program con- tinues with individual prophecies, a giftatory, and wills by the seniors to the under- classmen. In conclusion, the seniors raise their voices to bleat out their class song. This year the song went like this: Dough- -The money that we don ' t have. So--The sass that we hand out. Ray--The name of my best friend. Ma--The one we never doubt. Me--Myself and I all passed. Tea--The drink that won ' t give Pa- -The man we don ' t offend. gout. That will bring us back to dough, dough, dough, dough. Behind the Scene Our Advisor !
