' tA 3 v -r { PRESENTED BY THE SENIOR CLASS LAWRENCEVILLE HIGH SCHOOL Lawrenceville, Virginia ■ fejuii () , A f 1906 It is always sad to mark the passing of a good and so it is with deep regret that we, the class of 1955, write these words. For almost half a century the Lawrenceville High School has been the hub of the educational, athletic, and entertainment circles of the community. From its halls have gone forth thousands of alumni who, we believe, whether achieving material success or mediocrity, happiness or tra- gedy, have found imbedded deep within their hearts the principles for which the school stands -- attributes for fuller living, spiritual, mental, and physical. For twenty-five years, for more than half its life, with innate gentlemanliness, keen intelligence, ready wit, and patient under- standing, an alumnus, our principal, has maintained the standards of the school. The Senior Class with grateful appreciation and loving respect dedicate their volume of the Sentinel to their Alma Mater, the Law- renceville High School and to their friend, Robert Jefferson Jones. 1955 In this Sentinel is the story of one of our happy years spent at L.H.S. As you slowly turn through this book, many cherished memories of ball games, club activities, class parties, Junior-Senior Proms and other activities will be recalled. May we always remember these things, and especially our teachers who have so patiently stood beside us everyday of the year. We appreciate their efforts very much. We, the staff, present this book to you in hopes that it will bring much Joy to you in years to come. FACULTY Mrs. Elvin S. We were, shall we say, foreign to the ways of high school, but we were dazed with the thought of at last really being high school students. Although we were greenhorns dur- ing our Freshman year, we had our share of activities — most memorable are the spring party and the visit to the General Assembly. We also boasted of having so many of our boys participating in athletics. When our Sophomore year rolled around, we had been initiated truly into the ways of high school. We struggled through ancient history, Latin verbs, and algebra equations. During our Junior year we got into the Swing of things in many ways. We held of- fices in various school clubs, had trophy win- ners, and generally prepared ourselves for the position we would hold the following year. The musical strains of Moonlight and Roses will always revive memories of our Junior- Senior Prom — the fun we had pasting stars in the sky, twining roses and ivy in the picket fence, and presenting our own This is Your Life show. Also, for the first time L.H.S. had a band of which the class was very proud since we contributed a number of members. Now at last . . . the arrival of a momen- tous phase in our lives, this our Senior year of 1954-55. It seemed strange to us but we demanded seniority, and we received it. We knew we had reached a milestone when we b egan publishing the Bow-Wow, spending endless yet pleasant hours, working on the Sentinel, and producing Beauty and the Beef in which we certainly strutted our stuff. We outdid ourselves on the field, the court, and the diamond, where we not only learned to play ball; we also learned much about playing the game of life. During four years we have captured an overflowing reservoir of happy memoirs, which will bring us many moments of pleasure in the years to come. With our faces to the future we should keep in mind these fre- quently quoted lines from Shakespeare ' s As You Like It. All the world’s a stage, and all the men and ivomen merely players. They have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts. The world challenges us to play our part well. 16 BABY SNAPSHOTS James Lynch Amelia King Audrey Sitterson Narrcy Lynch Shirley Lucy Gene Lucy Chari es Perkinson Whitehead Elmore Joanne Ross Linwood Johnson Marian Lockerman Myrna Rawlings Thomas Clary Judy McElroy James Roberts John Hazelwood Nicky Nelson 17 Best All-Around: Mary Elizabeth Watkins Nicky Nelson Biggest Flirts: Sylvia Clarke and Nicky Nelson Neatest: Shirley Jane Lucy and Gene Lucy SUP Most Attractive: Shirley Jane Lucy and Gene Lucy Friendliest: Cutest: Shirley Jane Lucy and Tom Taylor ERLATIVES Best Looking: Joanne Ross and Gene Lucy Mary Elizabeih Watkins Gene Lucy Most Popular: Mary Elizabeth Watkins Nicky Nelson Wittiest: Myrna Rawlings and David Hartseil Most Likely to Succeed: Sylvia Clarke and Whitehead Elmore Most Happy-Go-Lucky: Mary Elizabeth Watkins Nicky Nelson SENIOR PLAY BEAUTY AND THE BEEF” Linwood Browder, Sylvia Clarke, Shirley Clary, Tommy Clary, Aubrey Edmonds, Whitehead Elmore, John Hazel- wood, Amelia King, Gene Lucy, Shirley Jane Lucy, Rebecca Matthews, Patricia Moore, Nicky Nelson, Elizabeth Norwood, Cecil Pearson, Charles Perkinson, Doyle Phillips, Myrna Rawlings, James Roberts, Dorothy Anne Robinson, Joanne Ross, Mary Elizabeth Watkins.
