1947 N Published By LAWRENCEVILLE HIGH SCHOOL LAWRENCEVILLE, VIRGINIA LAWRENCEVILLE HIGH SCHOOL Lawrenceville High School was founded in 1906. In 1912, with Mr. George D. Rowe as principal, the school became an accredited high school. Under the guidance of many principals the school has progressed rapidly. During the sixteen years of Mr. R. J. Jones’ administration, the curriculum and the extra-curricula activities have been broadened. Miss Glaudine O’Brien Miss Mary Jane Powell DEDICATION Our Senior sponsors, Miss Glaudine O’Brien and Miss Mary Jane Powell, have shown unbounded interest in the activities of our school as well as our class — no criticism is justified, no praise is adequate. To them, we therefore dedicate this volume of the “Sentinel” in an attempt to honor them. FOREWORD The inspiring help of our teachers, the sound of our laughter, the bustle of our working hours, the rush of our changing classes, the exciting thrill of our many sports — if this book gives an idea of these things, then we, turning its pages in the long years to come, may have the old happy memories of high school days come floating back to us, causing us to live again the happy hours spent at Lawrenceville High. One hardly recognizes it as history. We simply work and play together for four years. Ours is not a narrative of great achievement, but of preparation and development. ( The one hundred si.x of us who responded to the roll call in the fall of 1943 were not a particularly distinctive Freshman Class. Our fellow members were assembled from the four corners of Brunswick County, all of us fresh from primary schools — our chief asset a capacity for work and play, and a will- ingness to be guided by our superiors. The first days were confusing, but it did not take us long to feel at home. The year passed almost before we realized it. We had accomplished much; root sub- jects were mastered; new and lasting friendships had been formed. At the close of this year we felt such love and esteem for our school that we wanted to present to it a gift. Since the school had no moving picture projector we decided that that would be a suitable gift. Having completed our first year of high school, we entered our sophomore year. There were some vacancies in our rank, but these were soon filled by other aspirants as eager to begin this colorful period as we had been the previous year. It was at this time that some of the Ebony pupils entered our class. This proved to be a great addition as three of our annual staff members are among this group. Again, much was learned; we advanced in scholastic stand- ards and fixed our eyes upon loftier heights and worked diligently to merit the advancement that would in due time come to us. In a short time, it seemed, another year ran its course. Finding the first two years of our high school happy and eventful ones, we entered our Junior year, determined to increase our enjoyment. We followed the custom of entertaining the Seniors with a reception. The Glee Club was organized during this year, and a chance was given some of us to display our voices. We anxiously awaited the choosing of the new mem- bers of the Beta and Hi-Y Clubs, and many of us were chosen members. This year brought increased responsibilities, and more difficult assignments. These were borne with such patience as we could muster and with modest credit; for just before us loomed the goal of our high school ambitions; tremendous, impressive, silhouetted against the morning sun. But our preparation had been faultless; we were ready. Then we reached up to accept it, it seemed to step down and greet us — this year of years — this hallowed e.xperience in every student’s life — the Senior Year ! Now there were only sixty-one of us, nine of whom were veterans of World War II. Feeling somewhat superior but yet a little afraid, we began the end. This year the annual, the Sentinel, which had not been published for four years, made its appearance once more. The school paper, the Bow-Wow, edited by Ben Powell, was added to the activities and en- joyment of the students. As we mimeographed the paper ourselves, we had much fun along with the [ 17 ] CLASS HISTORY work. Also se eral new clubs were organized. An- other old custom was followed, the Seniors presented a play, “Don’t Keep Him W aiting,” directed by our sponsors. Misses Powell and O’Brien, with Pattie Ann Lambert as student director. In the play Jeff, Bill Moseley, surprised Jinny, Gill Temple, by kissing her. Toodles, Margaret Ann Hawkins, had an awfu l time trying to reduce but she finally got her man, Chester, who was Ozzie James. Three years of hard work and spirited play have been utilized not so much in establishing records, but in studied preparation for the ultimate fulfilment of specific obligations to society and for the ever in- creasing responsibility of citizenship. Now the time for trifles and dreams is over. Now Seniors, let us challenge ourselves that our history be not a thing of the past, but a vital drama of the future, and let us help make this world a better [)lace in which to live. [ 26 } INSIDE INFORMATION (OR KLUB KOMMENTS) .-ij- some explanation is needed Jor you to understand the purposes of our activities, we tried to get M’. himself to comment on them. But due to some unforseen incident this was impossible, so Junior will have to .mffce — Read on, Macduff! The Future Farmers of America trains boys to farm better . . . They should be an improvement over the old farmer who was a witness in a railroad case . . . Sez he, “W ' al, meui Jake waiz walkin’ down the track, and I hyeerd a whistle and got off the track, and the train went by . . . Then I got back on the track, Itut I didn’t see Jake. I walked on, and pretty soon I seen Jake’s hat, and then I seen one of Jake’s laigs, and then I seen Jake’s head over on one side, and I sez to m’.self, ’By cracky ! Sumpin’ musts happened to Jake!’ ” The future Flousewives of America learn how to run a home and manage their husbands . . . Some of them already have F.F.A. boys wound around their little finger. . . . The Beta Club members are arranged to form a “B” in their picture . . . Ah, distinctly I remember, it was in the bleak December when the picture was made, and it took the members three hours to thaw out . . . Spake them all then, Nevermore . . . Excuse me, Edgar. . . . The boy’s Hi-Y and the girl’s Tri-Hi-V have been going strong lately . . . The girl’s group used to be Hat broke, but they struck it rich one night selling eats at a football game ... At the next meeting they had a big table just groaning with refreshments . . . The boys stood at the door with bulging eyes and drooled. . . . What with new clubs and all, there has been an oversupply of initiations this fall . . . For days pupils crawled around praising Allah, and looking like circus clowns who had tried and couldn’t. . . . The Commercial Club is one of tho.se new ones . . It helps future secretaries learn essential points for getting ahead in their careers . . . i.e., Correct Posi- tion on Boss’s Knee, Typical Techniques in Tackling for Typists, Be Boss’s Wife in Ten Weeks or Le.sSj etc. . . . The Eibrary Club is supposedly composed of book- worms, but some of the members still just look at the pictures and welsh on book reports . . . Never mind, they get their pitchers in the annual. The Latin Club, some say, is to take the dead lan- guage out of the grave, and bring it back to life, but the way the members carry on, at times, the language will always be a walking zombie. . . . W’e used to have a Glee Club that did very well, but its fate was like of the following chicken . . . There was an old lady of Wooster Who was often annoyed by a rooster She cut off his head Until he was dead . ' nd now he don’t crow like he useter. Gill Temple, Bill Moseley, Oscar Cumbia, Christine Lucy, Ben Powell, Martha Wesson, Wilbur Harrison, “Dykie” Peebles, Jane Gregg, Ei.oise Browder, “Ozzie” James, Margaret Ann Hawkins. CAST Jeff Ramble, who is a camera fan Bill Moseley Toodles, his younger sister M. rgaret Hawkins Betty, his older sister Marth.a Wesson Owen, his father Ben Powell Selina, his aunt Christine Lucy Jinny, who is a good little pal Gill Temple Chester, who is allergic to work “Ozzie” James Sally Lou, who fascinates Jane Gregg Minvera, who giggles Eloise Browder David Vance, who is tired of waiting Dykie Peebles Amos Atkins, who is interested in antiques . Wilbur H. ' rrison O’Toole, who wants his money Oscar Cumbi.a The piay was built around the goings of the happy-go-lucky Ramble family. The cast was composed mostly of loose nuts (not crazy-, exactly, but loose anyway). None of the Rambles except Betty, the older sister, was capable of earning or saving money; much less spending it sensibly, and the plot was further entangled by several frustrated romances. However, after some well planned moves by the more serious members of the cast, and some unexpected moves by the frivolous characters, everything came out beautifully, with extra bounties thrown in. The right girls got the right men, the jobless got jobs, and wonder of wonders, the rattle-brained characters acquired a little sense! v33] LIBRARY CLUB Sealed , left In right : Madge Roberts, Lucy Gay Moseley, Pattie Ann Lambert, Carolyn Cornell, Marion Davis Pennington, Harriette Newman, Kuty Dugger, Helen Raney.
