FOOTBALL 1940 SCHEDULE Appomattox 0 Glen Allen 21 Ashland 14 Blackstone 0 Earmville 0 Emporia 6 Morrison 0 Victoria 0 T bey 6 0 0 26 0 0 0 14 The Lawrenceville Bulldogs closed the 1940 football season with a record of three wins, three losses and two ties. The Bulldogs were heavily hit by graduation and by drop-outs. Only eight men were held over from the previous squad of twenty. However, the midgets moved up during the 1940 season and saved the day. Practically the entire varsity team, with the exception of the eight men mentioned above, was made up of boys from the 193 9 midget team. Although small and inexperienced the locals really lived up to their nickname Bulldogs.” What they lacked in size was more than accounted for by their splendid spirit and fighting determination. To them the game was never over until the last whistle had blown. This team should have been an inspira- tion to other boys in school. They not only demonstrated the old school spirit, but they also gave those in school who refuse to participate in athletics something to think about. This team,” said Coach Payne, more than any team I have ever coached really held out the old football proverb so that all might see ' a quitter never wins, and a winner never quits. A team that won’t be beaten can’t be beaten’.”
