Zke SeHtinel 1941 PUBLISHED BY L WUENCEVILLE HIGH SCHOOL LAWRENCEVILLE, VIRGINIA Zhe School . Jj il f J jtM-Ai v .cu-onJ ' 2S ' Dedication The 1941 Sentinel is dedicated as an expression of appreciation and gratitude to Mr. M. G. White who, through his sincere cooperation and untiring patience with the staff, has made possible the publication of our annual, and whose unselfish loyal devotion to the interest of the students in the class room, the Glee Club, and the Hi-Y Club has contributed materially to the happy spirit which has distinguished our school days. Joreword We believe that the purpose of this book is to preserve, for memory’s sake, our high school of 1940-41. We realize that our attempt is not devoid of mistakes — no staff can produce a perfect book. For these mistakes we apologize. So, whatever its worth, we give you our conception of L. H. S. — not as you perhaps think it should be, but as it really is. FACULTY Mr. R. Lee Chambliss B.A., Hampden-Sydney College Sii perinfeinlejit Bnnisiiick County Schools Mr. Thomas R. In a number of instances the Club has been able to cooperate with various organizations. One of their first opportunities was to serve the Ashland football team. At the November meeting of the P.-T.A., the Club gave a reception for the members present. The Christmas basket project was carried out by the Hi-Y Club with the Home Economics Club cooperating. The girls repaired and cleaned clothing which was bought. The Club served the annual Eather-Son Banquet for the E. E. A. bo) ' s. This Club is always willing to do anything which comes in its field. Hl.y CLUB ACTIVITIES Seven members of the Hi-Y Club attended the State Conference which was held at Salem the weekend of March the twenty-first. During the year, the Club sponsored a Clean-Up-Campaign which was most suc- cessful in keeping the school grounds free from trash. The Club donated six dollars per month toward the purchase of a new piano for the school. The Mother-Son Banquet and the two initiation suppers were the outstanding social events in the Club. They were most successful and enjoyable. GLEE CLUB ACTIVITIES During the year the Glee Club, under the direction of Mr. M. G. Tite, was very busy. The group sang in Chapel a number of times, several churches, and the Senior Woman’s Club. On March the twenty-first the Club presented a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, H. M. S., Pinafore.” The leading characters were presented by Bettie Elam Elmore, ' incent Jones, Brownie” Matthews, Randolph Jones, Amelie Segar, Junior Saxon, Jack Smith and John Ross. The scener) ' and the costumes were lovely and the chorus was very cooperative. The operetta was a great success. Mr. White made it possible for the student body to hear the La Crosse Choral Club and for the local Glee Club to give a performance at La Crosse. FOOTBALL The Fighting Bulldogs” of Lawrenceville High School had a most successful season. They won three games, lost three games and tied in two games. The Bulldogs started the season with only two lettermen. The men were light but they ma de up for it with their fighting spirit. WON LOST TIED Glen Allen 21-0 Appomattox 0- 6 Morrison 0-0 Ashland 14-0 Blackstone 0-26 Farmville 0-0 Emporia 6-0 Victoria 0-13 GIRLS’ BASKETBALL dt Although most of the Girls Basketball team had never played more than a quarter of a game until this year, they showed grand sportmanship and cooperation in the games played. Nine of the team earned letters BOW-WOW The Boii’-Wow, the school newspaper, was started in the fall of 1937 and has been published each year since then. During the 1940-41 session there have been ten issues of the paper. The purpose of the newspaper is to report the activities of the school. It also offers to all students an apportunity to put their thoughts into piint; for original poems, stories, and essays are published in the Bow- ' Woxv. This year the Botv-W oiv has given financial aid to the Sentinel and has made a payment on the piano which the school has bought. F. F. A. CLUB The F. F. A. Club, under the direction of Mr. Huffman, has been very active this year. The members assisted the P.-T.A. by planting shrubbery around the grade building. They repaired toys for the needy children at Christmas. The Club has been most suc- cessful with its baseball and basketball teams. 9 JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS Joseph _Simmo_n5 Ann Landrum Evelyn Cumb a . . FOOTBALL 1940 SCHEDULE Appomattox 0 Glen Allen 21 Ashland 14 Blackstone 0 Earmville 0 Emporia 6 Morrison 0 Victoria 0 T bey 6 0 0 26 0 0 0 14 The Lawrenceville Bulldogs closed the 1940 football season with a record of three wins, three losses and two ties. The Bulldogs were heavily hit by graduation and by drop-outs. Only eight men were held over from the previous squad of twenty. However, the midgets moved up during the 1940 season and saved the day. Practically the entire varsity team, with the exception of the eight men mentioned above, was made up of boys from the 193 9 midget team. Although small and inexperienced the locals really lived up to their nickname Bulldogs.” What they lacked in size was more than accounted for by their splendid spirit and fighting determination. To them the game was never over until the last whistle had blown. This team should have been an inspira- tion to other boys in school. They not only demonstrated the old school spirit, but they also gave those in school who refuse to participate in athletics something to think about. This team,” said Coach Payne, more than any team I have ever coached really held out the old football proverb so that all might see ' a quitter never wins, and a winner never quits. A team that won’t be beaten can’t be beaten’.” Hi-y M. G. WHITE Leader Front Row, left to right: John Raney Bobb L Shell Willia m Ross Allen Kilpatrick President Joseph Simmons Tommy- Thomas Elton A. The all too devoting mother, the dominance of the maid, Delphie and the richlessness and rebellion of the children led up to a critical nioment, but the tactfulness of Hope, the older daughter, lessened the situation and ' ' peace and quietude reigned after the children had been left to show their own respon- K sibilities while Mr. and Mrs. Early were on a trip around the world. s A V OPERETTA CAST OF H. They wanted this operetta to be well worth seeing. There was much excitement when the costumes arrived, everyone thinking his or hers looked best. On the big night, March 20, the curtain rose on one of the most attractive stage settings in time. Not only was the stage at its best, but the chorus and principals, arrayed in their beautiful costumes, went through their parts with great ease and skill.
