Several past presidents of the university attended the installation, including Nathan Pusey, Curtis Tarr, Douglas Knight and Thomas Smith. Hanna Gray, President of the University of Chicago, and speaker for the occasion, challenged Warch to lead Lawrence according to its best traditions. He accepted this challenge as he accepted the position as president of the university. The lnstallation festivities included the Rededication of Main Hall, the Gala Ball and several concerts. ,,.s..- f ' ' ' , . B25 .r...2'..- 'tWe must acknowledge that the larger aims of liberal learning exceed the sum total of disciplines, divisions, and programs of the university. And we must affirm that to adhere to our traditional values is not to deny that we should also be venturesome and imaginative. In arguing that Lawrence should be constant in its purpose, l also intend that the university be bold in its purpose. We will serve our region and nation best if we hold fast to our mission in the face of the myriad distractions and distortions that will assail us in the next ten years. And we must be prepared to defend the genius of the university against those who would have us compromise that genius for short-term rewards. -Acceptance Speech, November 29, 1979 A liberal education is for free men and women. It is, in its largest and most ambitious formulation, an education that preserves and examines the tri- umphs of human imagination and experience, that values the worth and dignity of the individual, that affirms that a life of meaning involves a life of service, that believes that learned persons shape the social order in which they live. It is not an education designed to foster or pander to voca- tionalism that is merely self-serving. -Unamuno Begs to Differ, Matriculation speech, September 27, 1979 lg -Y - if I' -I V , f ill 'jar I. In fact, it is testimony to the magnificence and importance of our undertaking and aspirations, that they cannot be reduced, packaged, and presented in 25 words or less. The consequences of liberal learning can be evoked, not produced. We can only have faith that responsible analysis will lead to responsible action and that our learning will prompt our living. For we die of cold and not of darkness. It is not the night that kills, but the frost. -Unamuno Begs to Differ, Matriculation speech September 27, 1979 The genius of Lawrence is expressed in the lives and actions of its students and graduates. ln them our lofty aims are vivified. In their sensibilities our greatest hopes are embodied. ln their citizenship our social purposes are transmitted. For them and to them I say that a Lawrence education should always be more than credits and courses and degrees. It is not a four-year affair but an enduring association. A Lawrence education should serve forever as a set of expectations, of aspirations, and of assumptions that the university has for itself and for them: that with learning comes obligation, that with education comes responsibility, that with vocation comes service. -Acceptance Speech, November 29, 1979 it ' V3.1 'Fh- 1, 9- 65s 7' xc, 1 At Lawrence, we resist a balkanized curriculum, we insist on breadth in a student's course of study, and we strive to make connections among disciplines and fields not because we possess some peculiar version of liberal learn- ing, but because we possess some precious vision of the social order. It is a vision that insists that a democratic society remains free and viable when its people behave as citizens and when as citizens they are able and willing to manage its affairs intelligently and responsibly. We are not able without more light, not willing without more warmth. -Unamuno Begs to Differ, Matriculation speech, Sep- tember 27, 1979 r 5' -NARA Yi. ,Qu..,,...-ng. The National Endowment for the Humanities Challenge Grant Program, coupled with nonfederal monetary gifts, provided funds for Main Hall Renovation which was initiated on March 13, 1979. Spring term humanitarians were but slightly inconvenienced in being relocated across campus, but their hardships were not unrewarded. Main Hall opened in the Fall of 1979 in renewed glory. The former central staircase was replaced by an elevator accompanied by two end stairways. Fire escapes were eliminated, point stonework and repaired, repainted woodwork, soffits, and columns were featured. Small faculty offices were enlarged, while large, functionless classrooms provided bases for smaller, seminar classrooms. In addition, renovation included complete systems of plumbing, wiring, heating, and sprinklers. Yet, regardless of such functional modernizations, the architectural improvements of Main Hall still maintained the building's original nineteenth century flavor, Main Hall yet remains Lawrence's favorite sentimental shrine. fk -ww Ea llll --- - - ,su V Y Y an-N.. The decision to close Raymond, Briggs, East and Cooke houses was made by the administration third term after much discussion and oppostion from members of the student body. The reason given for the removal of this popular alternative campus life style was the rising cost of energy and maintenance. The administration feels the alternative is no longer a viable one. Their expectations were not to be denied, after a preseason loss to Milton College, they proved themselves in test after test. Lawrence culminated its season with the conference championship game against Carleton College. On an icy field with only minutes before had been covered with snow, Carleton drew the first points on an aerial strike. From then on Lawrence dominated with their 'smear machine' defence which controlled Carleton's feeble thrusts, and their offence showing how great it was. Led by Bruce Barkwill's rushing and Kurt Henrickson's three interceptions, Lawrence won the title by the embarassing score of 52-7. All-conference players for Lawrence were seniors Jim Petran, quarterback, Scott Roeper, center, Bruce Barkwill, defensive back, Greg Linnemanstons, line- backer, and Bill Simon, defensive end, as well as soph- omore Ken Urbanski, tackle. Patran, Barkwill, Hen- rickson and Simon were further honored as honorable mention members of the AP Title All American foot- ball team. Pi' PJ F1 -,--an NEW STUDENT WEEK While upperclassmen savored their last week of summer vacation, seniors Bob Perille and Mike Ladevich joined Lawrence's class of 1983 in New Student Week . With the aid of counsellors and faculty members, New Student Week served as an orientation and prelude to Lawrentian life. The evening's computer dance helped to break the ice as new Lawrentians danced lwith datesll and socialized in Riverview Lounge. The following Sunday afternoon featured Dean Taylor's speech, The First of the Liberal Arts , and served as inspiration to both freshmen and attending upperclassmen alike. The remaining week's activities included counsellor-section meetings, faculty introductions, advisor-advisee conferences, and most certainly, parties, parties, and more parties! It has been very trying for me, as many of my friends have witnessed. I became editor spring term with only a few pages completed and many ideas and plans interspersed with a huge mess. I was presented with three choices: go on as planned and incur financial penalties, forget the Ariel for this year, or cut down and revise. I chose the latter, and believe it was the right decision. A yearbook is an important part of a school and serves as a history and reference for future years. I have tried to put more into the book both in coverage and in style. However, the limits of time have taken their toll, as has an undertrained and under-experienced staff. I often ended up just doing it myself to save time and peace of mind. I have worked on yearbooks for six years and have strong feelings about what they should be. For a yearbook to be a complete history it should cover the school year from September to June, not parts of two academic years. Therefore the change to fall delivery is in my opinion a good one. I hope the Ariel stays with fall delivery, although it results in another problem - added costs of mailing to seniors. Everything has a trade-off, as in the case of studio portraits vs. informals. This term my attitude has been let us get the book done as well as possible with what we have and remember that next year will be better. Better because it will have the planning of an editor, not the pulling together of a managing editor suddenly transformed into editor. A yearbook should have a themeg a unifying factor. This book lacks this very important element. I feel as though I am making apologies when in fact I have nothing to be sorry for. For me it has been a good, albeit tiring, experience. If given the same decision to make with the hindsight I have now gained, I would say no, but it is too late for that now. All I can say is next year will be better. Tired of Downer atmosphere? Brownbag it, as Lizz Read, student coordinator of 1979-80 Entertainment a la Carte, would heartily recommend. Entertainment a la Carte, initiated in spring of 1978, was a weekly series of informal concerts. Held in Riverview Lounge every Thursday afternoon at 12:15, Lawrentians, Appletonians, and faculty members alike could be entertained for free. Entertainment a la Carte was sponsored in part by the Performing Arts Council, but featured varied programs, including student jazz ensembles, belly dancers, faculty ensembles, even the Royal Lichtenstein Quarter-Ring Sidewalk Circus. Instead of one more Downer meal, Lawrentians brown- bagged' their lunches weekly, to enjoy an hour's entertainment - a la carte that is! E. 5 Nu N as . '- ' A ' 4 r,-,Q -... The first four weeks of the term are devoted to intensive language work at a Goethe- lnstitute Centre in Rothenberg ob der Tauber. During this period students not only acquire the fluency necessary for communicating in German with Germans but also gain an introduction to modern German life. During the last six weeks of the term students work in small seminar type courses on aspects of German culture: literature, theater, art, music, and government. The Lawrence director Hans Ternes, with the help of specialists from the University of Munich, directs these seminars. Lectures and discussions are in German. Throughout the term students have opportunity to take advantage of the many cultural offerings in Munich. MUN ICH SEMINAR Philip Brick . The highlight of the experience was the field trip south to Grand Cayman Island from April 15th to the 29th. Sixteen Biology majors, and marine biologist, Sumner Richman, assisted by Dave Speilbauer of Inland Seas Diving Academy, Neenah studied various diverse coral reefs off the Cayman shore, using their snorl-telling in aquatic environments. The students also designed and carried out individual projects focusing on a particular problem of the oceanic environment. Occasional breaks in the intense study allowed for a chance to taste the Caribbean culture. The students were well received by the natives and shared in the fun of the local bars and weekly live calypso festival. MARINE BIOLOGY TERM N ,1g-'riff f- ,. Q ' W Ng- V. -.,, -Y ai.
