Latorraca, The Lawrence Wrestlers had a tough disappointing season in 1979. The wrestlers, under Coach Agness, fin- ished seventh in the conference tour- nament. The lone high point of the sea- son was a second place finish in the Lawrence Invitational. Senior Tom Meyer was the team captain. fT ' I

E7 Y' ' I .IZ 3 With the likes of Little All-Americans Paul Gebhardt and Frank Bouressa, the passing of nationally-ranked Jim Petran. and a starting team consisting entirely of returning juniors and seniors, the Vikes anticipated a year of promise. Anchored by defensive co-captains Dave Ponschok and Bob Eddy, the team coasted to six straight victories. The ground game led by Tim Sievert, Bruce Barkwill, and Mike Gostisha provided the firepower for the team. Jeff Heimerman and Brian Fero played sig- nificant pass catching roles as Gebhardt re- mained the big play man for quarterback Jim Petran. 'Iowa proved a damn unlucky place to play as L.U. lost two straight games to Cornell and Coe on consecutive weekends. With nothing but pride on the line, Lawrence utterly out- classed arch-rival and conference champions Ripon College 35-15 in the finale to conclude a bitter-sweet campaign at 7-2.
