MEN'S SWIMMING BACK ROW: Phil Polk, Tom Boya, Rick Maddox. Kipp Schrage. Linda Berger Cdiverj, John Traylor. FRONT ROW: Coach Gene Davis, Jim Acker, Mike O'Connel, Dave Burns. Jack Erkilla. John Cham- bers, Assistant Coach Jim Davis. Intrepid Captain Dave Burns led the L.U. Swim team to a 4-4 record to fin- ish the season. Last year the team fin- ished with a 5-3 dual meet record and a 4th place finish in the Midwest Confer- ence meet. Gene Davis was assisted this year by his son, Jim, from Osh- kosh. The team was very young, with only one senior, Dave Burns. Neverthe- less, led by six returning lettermen, the L.U.S.T. swimmers are expected to compile an outstanding record next year. , - ur- u :Q 4 i E i. ll i'1f : ' -!'gg?: 1' Y ..:.- .- '37 . - 5.-, 6- F' --v sz 'J Q WM '-'lf Sit .Q ri-5 -v.' 4-I I 'a- 3 1 -9 W lrJ.L WRESTLING BACK ROW: Coach Agness, G. E7 Y' ' I .IZ 3 With the likes of Little All-Americans Paul Gebhardt and Frank Bouressa, the passing of nationally-ranked Jim Petran. and a starting team consisting entirely of returning juniors and seniors, the Vikes anticipated a year of promise. Anchored by defensive co-captains Dave Ponschok and Bob Eddy, the team coasted to six straight victories. The ground game led by Tim Sievert, Bruce Barkwill, and Mike Gostisha provided the firepower for the team. Jeff Heimerman and Brian Fero played sig- nificant pass catching roles as Gebhardt re- mained the big play man for quarterback Jim Petran. 'Iowa proved a damn unlucky place to play as L.U. lost two straight games to Cornell and Coe on consecutive weekends. With nothing but pride on the line, Lawrence utterly out- classed arch-rival and conference champions Ripon College 35-15 in the finale to conclude a bitter-sweet campaign at 7-2. V, 4 43 YS 1 ,I S E SENIURS PRESIDE T SMITH RESIGNS Thursday afternoon, in an emergency faculty meeting, President Thomas S. Smith announced his resignation, effective 31 August 1979. Smith wishes to embark upon a new career before he retires. His plans, however, are as yet indefinite. He has consented to serve Lawrence as an Ad- ministrative Advisor for the '79-80 academic year. ln Smith's view it would not be in Lawrence's best interests for him to remain here until retire- ment. In his words, changing conditions of the world, of the college and of the president call for his stepping aside for new leadership. With retrenchment of faculty, staff, and admin- istration, the renewal of curriculum require- ments, and finally, the establishment of new in- terdisciplinary programs, the institution, he be- lieves, will benefit from the change. Except for Brokaw Hall and Alexander Gym, the physical plant will be in excellent condition with Main Hall renovation and by spring term the ten year ac- creditation'will be completed. He expressed his confidence in the strength of both faculty and students. ,ln . Spf' He went on to point out that the Admissions Office is functioning well and the development office has shown marked increases in gift re- ceipts. He concluded, l can leave feeling com- fortable about Lawrence's future. Since his arrival in 1969 Smith has seen much turbulence and change at Lawrence. ln social leg- islation changes have ranged from the allowance of alcohol consumption in the dorms to student discretion in determining visitation hours. Under his presidency students were for the first time allowed to sit in on committees previously re- stricted to faculty. His primary concern has always been balancing Lawrence's annual operating budget with its in- come sources, John Reeves of the Board of Trustees stated that Smith . . has brought Law- rence through a period which has been difficult for all educational institutions. Reeves went on to praise Smith for his more recent accomplish- ments in the area of administrative reorganiza- tion, Reeves expressed his sincere regret over the resignation. Courses offered incorporate topics rel- evant to British culture and history by utilizing the unique setting and by encouraging field trips and museum study. Students may also avail themselves to the many theatrical, musical, literary, culinary and cultural opportunities. London offers a fine base for short weekend trips to the English coutryside and for longer trips during mid-term and between term breaks to Ireland, Scotland and the Continent. ,L LONDON STUDY CENTER nv- ',1 y:f:.1g:2?1A1'-EE. ,. 5 4, Q. , Y 14.3-3-.H -:-?x.3.-x- .rag 4: Q-ss.: ,.,- '1.f ' A 51 5-5,193-'9Q'?2-Xia: f':3 :.'f:' 5' .' . The group that traveled to Mexico in the fall of 1978 consisted of 15 students and Mr, Martines. Classes were offered in the following areas: anthropology, sociology, history, art, and literature. All classes were conducted in Spanish. The emphasns was on education through experience. so students were en- couraged to travel. It is the general concensus of the group that studying in another country is the best way to learn, not only another language, but about people and culture in general. Q , u 'I , sr ? Stu- dents camp and travel in VW vans, experiencing the culture and people behind the Iron curtain. The trip was a real learning experience. We learned about rain and camping, how Finns act drunk, dysentary, explored beautiful churches, an- cient Kremlins. Russian banjas and of course - squatties! All of us have Lenin's figure firmly implant- ed in our memory, along with our two lovely and charming guides, Nina and Masha. Champagne now has a new meaning for us after the Kiev party thrown by our fearless leader. We remember Po- land for the high living we had with black market money. Zakopane is synonymous with parking tick- ets. Prague is now associated with Czech beer, ls- tanbul with the bizarre hustlers, and Yugoslavia with Slivovitz and beaches. But the best impression of the 1977 Slavic Trip we came home with is FUN! n 5 ,LLA L. 'sl I l f t F' A Q' 11: 'V ?'f - 'n i' H S5 .F is-.Q ,qi e I Mfr ' ' . Coach Harry Kelderman and co-captains John Laing and Grant Hartup led the team, composed mainly of freshman and sophomores, to a 6-4 record. With victories in the first five games, spirits were high. Then the bubble burst. ' L.U.S.T. was outplayed by Carleton. The next game was plagued with unfortunate injuries. Four defensemen went . The tennis team had an exceptionally fine season this year, which X culminated in an exciting one point victory over Ripon at the conference meet. Last year Lawrence shared this championship title with Ripon ..' after tying with them at the conference meet. Coach Mary Poulson felt ' B that the team's greatest strengths were its depth and versatility. Due to field trips and illness, the original six starters were not always available to participate in every meet. ln these situations, doubles partners had to be shifted and split up, and individual players had to play one or two positions higher than they normally would have. In spite of these disad- vantages, the team lost only two meets, both of which were outside the conference. They placed seventh in the Whitewater Invitational tourna- ment and placed second in the ACM tournament. The six starters included three returning juniors. two sophomores, and one freshman. f The team was well balanced with juniors .lan Hesson, Pietra Gardetto, and Stephanie Howard adding experience to the strength and enthusi- ' asm of the other players. The two sophomores, Kirsty Dobbs and Anne Smith, both played well under pressure. Alison Warcup, the only fresh- man of the six proved herself to be a good competitor and a strength for future tennis seasons. . .. 1 ,,' -' X xc, ai.,-W-. lv- Q lnx WOMEN'S TRACK Back Row: Coach Graskey, Julia Hannan, Lisa Hollen- steiner, Anne Hathaway, Sue Schneider, Mary Reed, Vickie Corbeil, Sue Davies Front Row: Michele Maturen, Coralee Ferk, Ann Whereat, Sue Shepard, Cynthia Boeye, Sue McGarth, Anne Smith ,ya ...LL 3r,s '5 ., ...
