Prologue Sidewalks chalk the pattern of our lives, the paths of activity on the campus. Concrete walks, however are not the sole vectors of our interests: Familiar and unknown paths trace the projection of our lives into the world. We came back to our campus from a summer that was troubled by unrest and violence. Our community was quiet, but elsewhere in the nation there was turmoil over the tangled growth of old, unanswered foreign and domestic problems. The frustrations and anxieties of America crowded their way onto our campus and and demanded a response from our community. Concrete buildings still cradled much of the activity at Lawrence, but there were bold paths from the ivory tower that gave our academic endeavors a special relevance in the larger community around us. Early in the fall, on a damp and miserably cold day, concerned students and faculty at Lawrence marched together in a solemn appeal for world peace. Members of our community chose paths of self-ex- tension into the political arena. The work was hard, menial, thankless and the reward for most of the young campaigners was bittersweet-and meaningful. Explosive issues, as in the rest of the nation, were rife on our campus, but students and faculty found the political avenue of cooperation to be more prac- tical and rewarding than that of confrontation. LUCC proved to be singularly effective in maintaining a balance between governmental power and responsive- ness in the administration of student affairs. The paths that sweep our students and faculty into the mainstream of political action, community ser- vice, and educational opportunity also project our university into the world. Perhaps the elusive ideal that races one step ahead of mants imagination is not a lofty spire-unconquerablerut is as near as an- other mants hand.

A return to the campus in September, the cold snap of the wind, the brisk pace of life in the chilly months of autumn. The trace of a familiar smile. The soft sparkle in a friendly eye. The drifting conversation over the clink of coffee cups. The soft chatter of girls in the background, doesntt matter where, its always there. The freshmen and the bewildered look on their faces. The beer and brat outings at Telulah Park. Walking to the football games. The soft rustle of leaves. Rakes parked against a tree. The maintenance crew on a break. Somewhere. Low flying frisbees that spin lazily across the lawn. The bridge game that lasts forever. The paper that never begins over a beer that never ends. Tomorrows that come too soon and leave too late.
