.I Purves and Kivell Coach Bernie I-Ieselton's Lawrence College golf team made up for a disappointing dual match record by copping third place in the 1955 Midwest conference golf match. The Vikes, led by Ron Kivell, who finished second by only three strokes in individual medalist score, were behind Carleton and three-time defending champion Knox in total team score. Lawrence has finished in one of the top three spots in conference play since IQ45. Dual match play showed only two victories over Ripon and losses to non-conference opponents Stevens Point, Michigan Tech, Marquette, and Oshkosh State twice, for a 1-5 slate. A late start and poor weather thru much of the season hampered the linksmen and carries much of the responsibility for this record. Lettermen Ron Kivell and john Purves paced this year's squad, with letterman Corny Young and Kent Ziemann, Paulf Morton and John Brunswick composing the rest of the team. Brunswick, who placed eleventh in the conference match, along with Morton, Ziemann, and Max Caller, another squad member, form a strong returning nucleus for I-leselton's 1956 title hopes. Backi Coach Denney, manager Fox, Negronida, Cianciola, Sawin. Middlei Weber, Meyer, Merry, Peterson, Hagen. Front: Simonds, Bundies, Schlick, Klingbiel. Coach Art Denneys 1955 Viking cindermen closed one of their more successful seasons by duplicating last seasons sixth place finish in the Midwest conference track meet. The fourth, fifth, and sixth place finishers were very tightly bunched. The Vikes showed no outstanding indi- viduals, but placed men in several events. The loss of Doug I-lagen, outstanding distance man who was un- defeated in dual meet competition but did not run in the conference races, undoubtedly hurt the team. Lawrence chalked up three victories in five dual meets, defeating Michigan Tech, Ripon, and Oshkosh State college and losing to a powerful LaCrosse squad and by a narrow margin to Stevens Point. The squad was hampered by the loss of several outstanding performers from last years team, but were led by veterans Doug Hagen and Mike Simonds in the distances, and Sal Cianciola and soph Tom Klingbiel in the dashes and field events. Dick Bundies in the hurdles and jim Schlick and Bob Meyer in the weights were consistent point-getters for the Vikings. TRACK page ..8 'Q' 12' I , 1.
