In his first year at Lawrence, Coach john Krause met with the problem of build- ing a cage squad around a nucleus of only three lettermen. As a result, the Vike basket- ball season was anything but successful. The squad, with Hal I-lomann, the team's leading scorer last year as a soph letterman Mike Gahagen, Warren Manthey, and newcomers Neil Buck, Dick Rine, and Frank Cole comprising the regulars, opened the season by losing to Stevens Point and then bounced back to defeat Oshkosh State. From here on the Vikes went into a king-size tailspin, losing I7 straight games before they beat Ripon in the season Finale. to compile an overall record of 7. wins and 18 losses. The record is deceptive, however, during the better part of the year, especially in the last eight games. the Vikings showed fiashes of brilliance. In several contests they held substantial halftime leads, only to fade in the second half or closing minutes time and time again. While I-lomann never regained the form he displayed as a soph, junior guard Dick Rine proved a bright spot. Rine, a standout as a playmaker, led the squad in scoring and at one time amassed a string of 31 consecutive free throws, a conference record. His play gained him honorable mention on the all-conference squad in his first com- petitive season. The fire and drive of soph reserve Billy NVood also brightened the otherwise dismal picture. Since Krause loses only one regular and only IQ percent of the teams scoring punch by graduation, prospects for next year, with io veterans, appear much better. v Front row: lvlanthey, Leatham, Homann, Cole, Weeman, Buck.
