Page 10 Before the present tennis courts were built, there were two courts in front of Ormsby Hall Cone of which is shown hereD and another near the President's house. Lewis M. Alexander of Port Edwards, Wisconsin, gave a gymnasium to Lawrence in 1901, now known as the Women's Gym- nasium, and he was the principal donor of the New Alexander Gymnasium built in 1928 and 1929. The Lawrence Memorial Chapel was built in 1917 and 1918, at a cost of about fB110,000. It was so named in memory of the first wife of Samuel Planrz QPresident 1894-19249 and the first wife of Wilson S. Naylor CProfessor 1904-1934 and long Dean of the Collegeb. The organ is a memorial to President Plantz.

J A' 4 Russell Sage Hall has been a dormitory for girls since its opening in October, 1917. The cost of the building and site with original furnishings was about 3S125,000. Of this sum .Mrs. Sage, widow of a famous railroad finan- cier and member of the New York Stock Ex- change, gave SE100,000. What We know as Sage Cottage was for many years the residence of Henry D. Smith, Appleton capitalist and president of the First National Bank. The house stood on part of the site of Russell Sage Hall, and was moved eastward to its present location. Ormsby Hall, gift of David G. Ornisby of Milwaukee, was opened for use in September, 1889. Until 1906 it was only about two-thirds of its present size and provided accommodations for sixty young ladies. EA i Up to February, 1941, the fra- ternities were housed in old resi- dences, mostly frame structures. Above is the house occupied C1911- 1916D by the Delta Iota frater- nity which later became a chapter of Delta Tau Delta. EWS Page 9
