ZW Qgfkgdflld Za f one were to read a biographical slcetch of President Barrows, it would run something lilce this: Thomas N. Barrows was born in San Diego, California in 1900, graduated from the University of California in 1922, did graduate worl4 at Columbia University from 1924 to 1931, was Director of Woodmere Acad- emy, Woodmere, New Jersey, from 1931 to 1934, joined the staff at Lawrence in 1934 as dean of the college, and became president in 1937. l'le had traveled widely in South America and Europe, and spent nine years in the Philippines. g l'lowever, if we students were to write our own sketch of him, it would not be of Thomas N. Barrows, but of Captain Tom, not of the world traveler, but of the builder of the Quadrangle. Une of the first to greet us upon ourarrival as freshmen, one of the last to bid us farewell as seniors, Captain -l'om's energetic per- sonality penetrated to every corner of the campus as long as we were here. The word President on the sign at the head of the corridor leading to the southeast corner of the second floor of the library rose as a forbidding fortress to many of us, but the dignified con- geniality that President Barrows showed on the chapel stage, out on the campus, in the quad, in the dorms, or over the Fox at the athletic field ran as rampant in his office as elsewhere. l-lis affection for l.awrence was both great and close, and his love of the college was one that was roundly reciprocated. We are sorry that we must write the finish to his tenure at Lawrence. Captain Tom . . . became president in 1937 and resigned, due to reasons of health, in 1943.
