IAMES IJITE Editor Business Malmgel' l'l1otugrapl1e1' ZW Qgfkgdflld Za f one were to read a biographical slcetch of President Barrows, it would run something lilce this: Thomas N. Barrows was born in San Diego, California in 1900, graduated from the University of California in 1922, did graduate worl4 at Columbia University from 1924 to 1931, was Director of Woodmere Acad- emy, Woodmere, New Jersey, from 1931 to 1934, joined the staff at Lawrence in 1934 as dean of the college, and became president in 1937. l'le had traveled widely in South America and Europe, and spent nine years in the Philippines. g l'lowever, if we students were to write our own sketch of him, it would not be of Thomas N. Barrows, but of Captain Tom, not of the world traveler, but of the builder of the Quadrangle. Une of the first to greet us upon ourarrival as freshmen, one of the last to bid us farewell as seniors, Captain -l'om's energetic per- sonality penetrated to every corner of the campus as long as we were here. The word President on the sign at the head of the corridor leading to the southeast corner of the second floor of the library rose as a forbidding fortress to many of us, but the dignified con- geniality that President Barrows showed on the chapel stage, out on the campus, in the quad, in the dorms, or over the Fox at the athletic field ran as rampant in his office as elsewhere. l-lis affection for l.awrence was both great and close, and his love of the college was one that was roundly reciprocated. We are sorry that we must write the finish to his tenure at Lawrence. Captain Tom . . . became president in 1937 and resigned, due to reasons of health, in 1943. gvkedhni Wamm J? 50067606016 ..,. . -mf! L 4. X - DEAN DONALD DUSHANE Mr. DuShane, Donald Duck, as he is more familiarly known to all Lawrentians, has had variedoccupational experiences, which have ranged from selling glassware and china, and being a rental agent lor apartment buildings, to working on a newspaper. l le formerly taught government at Columbia College, New York, and says that his main interest is teaching. Now, however, his duties have extended beyond government to include those ol the Dean ol Men. It is he whom we see when we want to knock otl for a few days, or to whom we give all those alibis when we have had triple cuts in that particular class. DEAN PAUL RUSSELL ANDERSON Mr. Anderson, once lull-time interpreter of Plato and Aristotle, now concentrates his time and energies into being a friendly, efficient Dean of the College. l-le's the man behind the pipe to whom you are quite likely to shout, l-li. l-le thinks tennis is a grand sport, and in leisurely moments he enjoys a thoughtful game ol chess. ln addi- tion he has been known to paint houses. A visitor to his home is struck with the way in which it reflects his travels in the Qrient. Lawrence has, he maintains, a friendly and democratic spirit and has made an excellent attempt at balanced living. l l l A Y R Page 8 DEAN CHARLGTTE WOLLAEGER Miss Wollaeger, pacifying influence at the Sig Ep house, says that she is mostly inter- ested in people and rightly so as can be seen by her job as Dean of Women. She is very fond and proud of her classical record collection which is growing by leaps and bounds. Driving tractors, too, is a rare hobby, but she delights in this as well as farming on a large scale. She formerly taught speech at Shorewood l-ligh School, and is still vitally interested in the theater. l-ler unofficial title is that of the best- dressed woman on-campus, and her radiant personality and little suppers are well- lcnown on campus. DEAN MARSHALL HULBERT lV'lr. l-lulbert became assistant dean last year besides assuming his new role as a psy- chology professor after a glorious career at the conservatory. We still enjoy, how- ever, his yearly performances in the Mes- siah and with the a cappella. l-le has been vitally interested in travel since he got the first Lawrence tour to Europe underway in 1926 as business manager. l-lis spare time last summer was talcen up with a very large and flourishing Victory garden, and his interests have developed further into a col- lection of old and rare maps, several of which adorn the walls of his office. Each sorority, fraternity and independent group elects one ol their members to this committee. They attend meetings, discuss current college problems, go to their respective groups to get their viewpoints and return to vote on any and all issues. ln this way all students are lcept in close contact with their government and the measures tal4en by the governing body are representative ol the majority. This year a new problem arose because ol the V-TQ unit here at l.avvrence. The popular feeling was that they should have an equal representation on the executive committee as they vvere to tal4e an active part in all the activities of the college. Many sailors are members ol fraternities not on the campus and many are not atliliated. To give them a voice in their government, it was decided that they should elect three men to the executive committee. Some ol the duties ol the committee include the election of a vice-president, secretary and treasurer from its immediate group and ol chairmen ol the social, pep, rules, homecoming, union and convocation committees from the entire student body. It malces nominations lor the all-college judicial board and evolves the yearly budget. lts legislative duties lceep the committee an active one throughout the year. JUDICIAL BOA l-lannon, Clarke, I-larmann, Geraldson, Rauschenberger, Bryant llie Women's Judicial Board enforces tlwe rules made by L. W. A. and is an integral part of that council. -lfme members, junior and senior dorm proctors, are fieaded by tl'ie vice-president of L. W. A. llriis office is lweld by Beclcy Clarke. RD ALL-COLLEGE JUDICIAL BOARD llwe function of tlie recently-established C'l943D All-College Judicial Board is to impose penalties for infractions of rules made by the combined faculty and student rules committee. lts members are seven upperclassmen clwosen by student vote. Pond, Rauschenberger, Schumann, Bick, Sclioff, Williams, Clarke Page Q1 LWA. Mitchell, Burke, O'Connor, Ross, Clarlce, Goode, Cieraldson, Watson Whether little Sammy Sailor wants a date to the next all-college dance or little Connie Coed wants another town permission or you canit hear yourself talle in Sage dining-room during second lunch, L. W. A. is sure to get its finger in thepie. For when an organization is composed of 300 curious and eager coeds, it can't help having at least one finger in every college pie. This year the presence of the navy and the consequent changes in schedule have resulted in a reorganized L. W. A. program. Gut with feminine morale building and in with entertainment for land-loclced sailors. Une of the best ways for bringing together civilian men and women and sailors and faculty was the traditional L.. W. A. open house held every month at Sage. L. W. A. sponsors the annual l-lag-Drag, and the Best-loved Banquet when the four best-loved senior girls are revealed. Every year until now a senior girl has been chosen queen of the May, but this year she will reign midst cold and ice as the Snow- queen. 'lhe Lawrence Womenis Association comprises two groups: the L. W. A. council is the executive and legislative power and the Judicial Board is the judicial branch. The members of the council are the elected officers and the representatives from W. A. A., Pan-l'lellenic Council, and freshmen women. The three faculty members who serve on the council are the Dean of Women, a woman appointed by the presi- dent of the college and one elected by the council members. This year L. W. A. is doing its best to malce Lawrence an active part of the war effort and yet l4eep college life at a satisfactory norm. 'I PAN-HELLENIC COUNCIL Watson, Lawson, Wheeler, Chapman, Brown, Farrell With establishing new rushing rules and penalties and deciding upon other inter-sorority laws, Pan-l-lellenic Council is playing an important role in Lawrence's feminine Greek world. Each of the six national sororities is represented. Miss Wollaeger is the faculty advisor. INTER-FRATERNITY COUNCIL lnter-fraternity Council, composed of Dean Dughane and the fraternity presidents talces care ol the relations among the live fraternities. The scope ol its problems runs from rushing rules and pledging to problems concerning the war etlort. , , N ,, .N i Dite, Teply, FOrbUSl1, Van l'lCf18Cl1 Wilsli A Page 23 . 47.1 .Kr 1:-ff -1 .
