Text from Pages 1 - 104 of the 1958 volume:

When we observe the life of a successful man, we usually discover that one or more individuals have contributed much to this success. The successful one, in turn, brings honor and fame to his family and community. So it is with our school. Many people belonging to various organizations have our particular interests at heart. They feel that we belong to them. And in reality we do. These organiza- tions, which were rounded for many and varied reasons, go their own way seeking their own goals. Une thing, however, they all have in common--that is an interest in our schools. That common de- nominator, then, makes our school the Heart of the Community. Therefore, to these wonderful people who look after our needs -- - -Spiritually ----Physically and ----Educationally we respectfully dedicate this book. 'ilvy +- ?-,,f ,,.-Q ,,f4' Q .J dv. . , X, , . Our second activity was a Christmas party at which an enjoyable time was had b all. Because of our Y able executives, our Student Coun- cil representatives, and fine class members, we had a wonderful year, and we are now looking forward to the coming year. Now that this particular chapter in our school life is almost over we can look back with fondest memories at our classes and at our social events. We'll never forget our donut and bake sales because we has such a wonderful time selling the food and boosting our treasury to a new high. Confidentially, we'll bet everyone is still singing the songs from our dance. Like everything else, this function went over exceptionally well. Slowly, but surely, this chapter is closing, but we'll be looking for- ward to our next year as Lawrence Park High School Sophomores. With the help of our teachers, we enthusi- astically set out to improve our minds. Education, however, was not all of our program. On the dramatic side we helped form the Junior Dramatic Club and pro- duced a fine class assembly. On the social side we sponsored dances and parties. Our class was also active in such fine service organizations as the Jr. Hi-Y, Jr. Y-Teens, Library Club, and Jr. Red Cross. In addition, our class was also responsible for forming the Jr. Science Club. James Moorhead, Patrick Crotty, Ann Clark, Alice Bachman, and Barbara Lee and Mary Payha were our very efficient officers and auditors, respectively. Our class advisers--Mrs. Carmie Stager, Mr. Thomas Barringer, Mr. Paul Mahoney, and Mrs. Margaret Anderson--did a fine job of guid- ing us. We were well represented on the Student Council by Barbara Runisey, Don Meier, and Diane Zimmerman. Needless-to-say, we are looking forward to next year when we shall be listed as Fresh- men. They were the members of the Class of 1963, recently promoted into the Seventh Grade and becoming accustomed to new surroundings, new teachers, and new routines. The class, which is made up of sixty-three members, has as its elected officers: President-- William Owens, Vice President-- Richard Bergan, Secretary--Nancy Avery, Treasurer--James Haskins, and Auditors--Michael Nevin and Leslie French. Representatives from each homeroom serving on the Student Council were Philip Larson from Mr. May's room, Diana Hook, Mrs. Stonefoot's roomg Sally Hewitt, Mr. Stanczak's room. Our faculty advisers were: Mrs. Frances Stonefoot, Mr. Russell May, and Mr. Floyd Stanczak. Under the direction of our faculty, our officers, and our Student Coun- cil, we have enjoyed a successful school year in all our activities. 5' 21' 'tt 0 0 9 9 ve 15 WQB8 . s 93'..haQ3?,13 16 For the second time in three years, Lawrence Park again won first place in the Erie County Football Conference. The team also took the District Ten P.I.A.A. trophy and ended the season with a 7-1-1 record with teams scoring against them in only three games. Coach Poly and his assistants, Mr. Barringer and Mr. Finnessy, produced the championship team which included ten lettermen from last year's squad. Oddly enough, only one Senior out of seven was in the backfield. This will give the coaches an experienced backfield and a fairly experienced line to work with next year. Altogether there will be twelve returning lettermen to make up next year's team. This year's lettermen are: Seniors--Neale Anderson, Tom McMurray, Jerry Olson, Frank Stefano, Clayton Witherow, and co -captains George Hulsinger and Allen Repineg Juniors--Robin Burrows, Dave Conley, Art Fetzner, Bob Glasgow, Jack Humphreys, Jim Lamb, Don Potter, Dick Horn, and Lamar Williams, Sophomores--Sandy Dalglish and Bob Samson. Lawrence Park's Football teams have always been ones of which we could be proud, and this year's team is no exception. We are looking forward to the same encouraging results next year. Denny Glasgow lead the way as- sisted by Herb Dyer, Dave Orchard, Paul Minier, Ronnie Swenson, and Bob Erdle. Congratulations go to Dennis Glasgow who came in sec- ond in the District Golf Champion- ship hcld at Edinboro, thus quali- fying him to play in the State Championships held at State Col- lege. This is the first time in many years that a Park player has held that honor. Also to be com- mended is Mr. Poly for his excellent coaching. i TENNIS Our Tennis Team fared very well in the city series competition last year, experiencing only two losses. Academy, Strong Vincent, Prep, and East were among the many schools played by our squad during the season. John Bloom did a fine job leading the team to many victories. Jim Dyer, Vince Cresciman, Tom Wood, Jack Humphreys, and Steve Holmes played fine supporting roles in the matches. All but John Bloom will be back again this year to go out after a perfect record. Mr. Kring must be commended for his coaching. CONGRATULATIONS, TEAM! Our 1957 Track Team once again carried away first place honors at the Erie County Track Meet held at Edinboro. Several of our boys also qualified in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Associa- tion District Ten meet. In addition, the team met with Prep, McDowell, East, and Harborcreek high schools. Varsity lettermen included: George Renshaw, John Fetzner, Andy Dalglish, Dick Flaugh, Jim Deuink, Tom Johnson, Phil Smock, Bob Gardner, Tom Bergan, Al Repine, and George Cochis, manager, John MacGregor, Jim Lamb, Joe Payha, and Bruce Ross were the Junior Varsity lettermen. Some of the prospects for this spring are: John Fetzner in the sprints, Tom Johnson in the mile, John MacGregor in the broad jump, and Jim Cipalla in the discus and shot putt. Lawrence Park can look forward to having a fine track team this year. 52 X , . 1 .1 ,- SM ,ff3' 4.35 ff -9. Q E ' I Q fr 1 T' V: ' 9 P, an .. 4 . A 5 'N .. This beautiful bit of Sanskrit philosophy, actually the theme behind the American Field Service, has been familiar to us since 1951 when we were hosts to our first European exchangees. Since that time Lawrence Park High School has sponsored a total of nineteen foreign exchange students representing the countries of Germany, Luxemburg, Austria, Spain, Italy, England, Sweden, France, Greece, Indonesia, and Finland. This year we had with us Artati Wiradihardja of Indonesia and Ilkka Raimo of Fin- land. Sending students from our school to Europe is another phase of the exchange program. Last summer, Pat Jenks was Lawrence Park's ambassadress to the island of Grete, Greece. Certainly, we at Lawrence Park High School have enjoyed walking and talking with our many wonderful ambassadors of youth. ek 11 'T sf, VA Linda Roth Ruth Barrell Paul Minier Jim Dyer George I-Iulsinger Gail Meier Kay Sundback Jim Pachell Advisors: YEARBOCK STAFF Coordinator Editor Layout Editor Assistant Layout Editor Photography Editor Literary Editor Typing Editor Business Manager Mrs. Fobes Mrs. Skala Miss Carnahan Mr. Finnessy 9- 1 umm B no 1 W Al.
