ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENTS Dr. David Kendall Kenneth Fisher SCHOOL BOARD CURRICULUM COORDINATORS R. Wayne Nelson SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS DR. CARL KNOX H.C. Stuart 14 15 Bill Medley stepped into an enormous shadow when he assumed command of Lawrence High School. That was in 1966, and the presence of Mr. Neal Wherry was still very much apparent. By the final year of his administration, 1973, Medley had quietly created a shadow of his own. Residues of the Medley years will remain for a long time. Many of the ideas he nurtured are yet in their infancy. Evidence of Medley's mastery in the art of administration is scattered liberally throughout the LHS environment. It is most visible in the staff of over 100 teachers and administrators which achieved under his guidance a rare unity while providing ample diversity to serve the needs of 1700 students. When Max Rife assumed command at LHS, he observed that no principal in the world had a more loyal faculty than Bill. Bill Medley served LHS by assuring its successful adjustment to a highly fluid society. During his term, numerous intense and varied pressures were brought to bear upon LHS. His role was to decide when to flex and when to stand. Lawrence High is stronger today for the decisions he made. Medley was a great planter of ideas. An educator, like other professionals, must keep up with the developments in many fields. As educators across the nation sought to create the ideal school, he watched. And, slowly, he transformed an institution. Such diverse innovations as the Principal's Advisory Council and student self-enrollment were drafted under Medley's leadership. He did not work alone, as he would quickly indicate, but much credit probably escaped him because he was so deftly delegated authority and responsibility. Medley kept himself busy insuring that Lawrence would benefit from the expanse of educational insight that began to emerge during his tenure. Changes in every area of school life sifted into LHS-curriculum, student activities, administrative technique-all bases were touched. But the high school was touched by other forces too. The currents of social change in the community, the state, and the nation all swept through the educational estuaries. When the currents became waves. Medley was there. He rode out the storms, but further, he refused to permit Lawrence High to drift out of the mainstream of American Life. Bill Medley allowed the school to become a microcosm of society. His policies created an environment in which students could get not a mind full of memory, but an apprenticeship in living. Under Medley, academic freedom became not merely a matter of what can we teach, what can we learn, but more nearly the most desirable means to the ultimate goal -serving simultaneously the needs of students and the demands of society. By example. Medley demonstrated that freedom to learn and freedom to teach are defensible only with responsibility. Only by delivering quality could Medley demand it. Testimony to his success is the high regard given to LHS in educational circles through the midwest. When he was tapped for the Principalship of a new, well-funded high school in suburban Delaware, he earned a tremendous compliment for himself, and for the people with whom he worked in Lawrence. The people in Delaware can be assured that shortly. Concord High School will possess the best education can offer. It will become, as LHS has become, a nice place to work, a good place to learn, a great place to be. With the promotion of Max Rife to principal, John Forbes moved up into his position as head and Phil Pestinger became a division princi- pal. Therefore, there was a void to be filled in the counseling office. This was filled by Don Binns and Darrell Falen. Together they share responsibilities as co-counselors. 18 ROY CROPP STAFF Custodians-ROW ONE John Andes. Lylo Coleburn. Lola En- gland, John Young. ROW TWO. Lester Shire. Delmar Rogers. The depth of her commitment to quality education and to the development of her students could not be questioned. Changing times are nothing new. Irene can tell you that. Each of the forty-two odd classes that left LHS during her tenure was unique, and owes no small part of its success to her dedication. High school teachers don't get titles like professor or dean. It's just teacher. Irene Smith was 42 years a teacher, humble and dignified. She retired in 1973. 41 0 This Lion's got Senioritis. With help from Stu-Co, the Pep Club constructed a float in the shape of a giant L. Before the game itself the float, marching band, terps, and pep clubbers paraded around the stadium. Although we lost the football game the homecoming ceremonies were enjoyable. 105 Cross Country Team Shows Improvement The 1972 edition of Mr. Sublett's cross country team was one of the better teams in the school's history. The Lions had the material to be one of the state's best teams this year but they ran inconsistently. The harriers grabbed one trophy by placing third at the Wamego Invitational. The Lions also placed second in the Seaman Invitational and Lawrence Invitational. The Lions were paced by senior Tom Schmitendorf and junior John Rinkenbaugh. They were capably backed by seniors Brian McManness, Dale Culver, and Richard Sweeney. Junior Lettermen were Clay Kappel man, Vince Miller, Dave Roush, and Bernard McCoy. Sophomore prospects were Tom Reynolds and Robert Hardy. The harriers look forward to a good season next year and a trip to the state meet. Coach Sublet! confers with runners. North 23 Lawrence 14 Topeka 12 -r — • 1972 was a frustrating season for the Lions. After a brilliant previous season. Coach Gibson couldn't get the Redmen off on the right track. The Varsity Lions ended the season ith a disappointing 4-5 seas The season began with Lawrence kick! Shawnee Mission East. The first half ended vAtffl ry even 0-0 stalemate. After that, the game Ponged entirely to the Lancers. By the end of the game, SME had three touchdowns to their credit while Lawrence could not grin points to make the score 18-0. The sett ng of the next game was at Haskell Stadium against Wichita West. Though playing a very impressive game, the Lions could not hold on toftheir half-time lead of 18-13. Instead, the outcome was a closely lost game. The Red Machine gave off sparks' as the Lions went on to win the next two games against Topeka and Topeka West to even up the season's record. Nothing seemed to go wrong for the Lio £as they beat Topeka 27-14. The next game with Topeka West was as evenly matched a game as is possible. But the Lawrence team gained the win over the Cb egers by a three point margin. m 1 Jn the following game, Shawnee Mission West's defense proved to be much too powerful for the Lions. The red offense was constantly discouraged from scoring as the Vikings handed Lawrence a shut-out lo . After a very disappointing homecoming loss to Washington, Lawrence went on to gain an important win against the Shawnee Mission South Raiders. Losing at half-time, the Redmen came to completely over- whelm the Raiders 18-7. The Lions proceeded to Shawnee Mission North for a very critical and important game. But to the disappointment of Lawrence, they lost by a heart- breaking 19-23 score. By losing, the Lions were guaranteed a losing season and were completely knocked out of the competition for the state title. The game with the Trojans seemed to strike the team and school as unimportant. Lawrence, having already beaten Topeka easily the first time, had a rough time in the playoffs. But the Lions hung on to' grab the lead and the gamej 4-12. The leading rusherrfor Lawrence were Bob Floyd, __ [Into PfllTTl nnrl Dave Rogers who gained over a total of 1,700 yards between them. The leading passer was Carl Heinrich. Though the Lions are losing 22 Senior Lettermen, there will be 15 Lettermen returning next year to assume the positions. With better luck, the Lions should have a state caliber team next year. Varsity Squad-ROW ONE (left to right): Coach Gibson. Ron Wellman, John Chaney. Greg Dutt, David Miller. Mike Altenbernd. The 5-2 record they accomplished, stands as the best in the short history of wrestling at Lawrence. Though inconsistent in tournament competition, the matmen beat top tournament teams in their dual meets. Lawrence sent seven grapplers to the state tournament in Topeka but placed only three. Gary Breiphol, Justin Yearby, and Mike Gillespie took second, third, and fourth place honors, respectively. The Lions are losing six varsity seniors but have got a lot of potential for next year. With seven varsity members and several experienced wrestlers returning, next year promises to be another highly successful year for Coach Jim Beltch and Assistant Coach Lyle Hoover. 130 . . .and astonishment Seniors End A Great Year 131 Grapplers Earn 5-2 Season 1973 Varsity-BACK ROW: Assistant Coach Lyle Hoover, Mike Freed. Coach Waller's Lions, though highlighted by many great individual performances, found it difficult to put together a solid team performance. The greatest moments for all those concerned were found at the Lawrence Night Relays. There under the leadership of some seasoned veterans the Lions placed second only two points behind the winner Manhattan. They did however beat Topeka High for the second time of the season and Topeka later became the 5A state champions. The outlook for the Lions is hopeful with the return of such junior greats as Mike Wellman, Tad Scales, John Rickenbaugh, and Barney McCoy. Along with a more experienced group of sophomores the Lions should fair well in the 1974 track season. Dave Crawley Tim Miller Dale Culver Gary Keefer Dan Coffman 135 Mike Wellman the Lions shot putter pieced second at the state meet with a toss of 56 feet 8 Vi inches. Tad Scales made fine showings at all meets this year. He topped off the season with a first place vault of 15 feet 8V4 inches at the state meet which is a new state record. He is also the first Kansas high school vaulter to clear 16 feet. The 880 relay team of Dave Crawley, Dale Culver, Brian McManness. and Tim Baxter qualified for the state meet. This is the best ever done by the girls' team. Coach Carney To the end. Poise And Skill From the beginning: 147 The girls began the second season of girls' track with a lot of optimism. Coached by Mrs. Carney, the Lionettes practiced after school for the main objective, the AAU track meet. One of the highlights of the year was the home meet in which records were set in all the events. With interest growing, next year looks to be another successful season. The traditional Service Week drive raised $2,034 for the KU Burn Center. Total receipts for the StuCo-Kayette Carnival were $1,040-the most ever, and was a night of fun for more than half the student body. The Dance Committee, headed by Penny Sherman, threw some wild dances: the Xmas Formal, the Computer Dance, the Sadie Hawkins Dance, and a nostalgia Sock Hop. Major projects worked on by StuCo were: an extended lunch period with open lunch for Juniors, an effort to get a student on the Principal's Advisory Council, a paperback library-a free exchange of books, and a tutoring service for students. Much time was spent on improving the StuCo procedures and several proposals to alter the entire structure were discussed. The consideration of these structural changes and the success of the projects shows the concern, involvement, and efforts of many students. SYLVIA MOORE President LINDA SIMON. I tried and with the help of the staff, photographers and King Yo-Yo, I do think that we did succeed. I hope that you think so too, but, if you don't that's the way it goes. Putting the yearbook together was a lot more work than I thought it would be. A big thanks goes to Sarah who always listened to my gripes. Without Tony I don't know how many pictures wouldn't have been printed. Thanks to Beth for taking an accurate roll every day?? Everyone on the staff came up with some wonderful pages except for John. He always let us know how the photogs were doing. The photogs did always come through—though sometimes a little late-but it was better late than never! Kristi and Sarah came up with great cartoons, I think that they do something extra for a page. Hope that you enjoy the book. jG ' VY) iaJUa Editor-in-chief '73 RED and BLACK who Knows ? he who knows and is a knows that he 1 master; knows, he who knows and does not know ' fhat he knows, needs a teacher; he who does not know and knows that he does not know, needs love; he who does not know and does not know that he does not know, is lost. ancient proverb
