I I LAWRENCIAN 1977 Created by The Students of Lawrence High School Cedarhurst, New York Trkf TO CREATE. . . IS TO GIVE SHAPE 4s a group we speak securely, confident in our invulnerability. 4 Individualism is rather like innocence; 6 One of the hardest things to realize is that our predecessors were living men who really knew something. The present contains nothing more than the past, and what is found in the effect was already in the cause. 8 and we must respect the past, remembering that once it was all that was humanly possible. The flower you single out is a rejection of all other flowers; WHAT OTHERS SAY OF ME MATTERS LITTLE WHAT I MYSELF SAY AND DO MATTERS MUCH. rHWt r THE WORLD ISA DISCRIMINATING BUYER, APPREHENSIVE OF OUR POTENTIAL AS A PRODUCT. -'T” What another would have do not what another one has do not be faithful to that which exists and thus make Our year—a year in which we did as we pleased; but without the basis for any accusations that we followed someone else's mold of what we should be like — Rather we created our trends, styles, individualism and will continue to. His dedication to the teachers in his department and to his many thousands of students over the years is well known. His contributions to the Lawrence High School Business Department, particularly during his period of chairmanship, have been especially significant. Mr. Edwin Krawitz Michael Bickerman THE LEADERS OF THE CROWD They must to keep their certainty accuse All that are different of a base intent; Pull down established honour; hawk for news Whatever their fantasy invent And murmur it with bated breath, as though The abounding gutter had been Helicon Or calumny a song. How can they know Truth flourishes where the student’s lamp has shone, And there alone, that have no solitude? So the crowd come they care not what may come. They have loud music, hope every day renewed And heartier loves; that lamp is from the tomb. William Butler Yeats 113 115 SENIOR SOUND-OFF. . . Plato STEPHEN HERSCHKORN HONOR SPEAKER As we have been told many times, apathy has been an overwhelming affliction of our graduating class. In reality, though, in twenty, or even five years, the high school spirit of each of our class, or the lack thereof, will not make much difference to us. Together they have made a significant impact over the many years of dedicated and loyal service to the students of Lawrence High School. Each one has made a contribution that deserves some individual recognition. Mr. Arthur Alexander Mr. Alexander has been a teacher of the biological sciences at Lawrence High School since 1952. In 1967 Mr. Alexander was appointed chairman of the Science Department and has served in that capacity until the present time He has been an outstanding teacher, as his hundreds of students over the years will testify. He has made a considerable impact on the Science Department by the introduction over the past ten years of many new courses and revisions in standard courses to give the Science Department a reputation as one of the “top” in New York state. We wish Mr. Alexander well in his retirement years ahead. Mrs. Justina Flynn Mrs. Flynn has also been a long-time teacher and department head in the field of home economics at Lawrence High School since 1951. She has brought to the department a number of interesting and innovative programs during the past years that has rekindled student interest in this very vital area. Half-year courses such as Baking. Foreign Foods, and Child Development are worthy additions to our program, judged by the increased number of students enrolled. When Mrs. Flynn retires at the end of June, she is looking forward to many years of travel and leisure. Mr. Salvatore Russo Mr Russo has been an English teacher since 1956 at Lawrence High School. His pleasant and affable personality has endeared him to the many students who were fortunate enough to be in his classes. Mr. Russo has been the coordinator of our audiovisual department for many years and has done an outstanding job in this respect. We wish him many years of happiness in the future. Mr. Joseph Morabito Mr. Morabito has been a teacher of diversified talents at Lawrence High School since 1953. As a member of our Foreign Langauge Department, he taught Spanish for many years. He also holds a certificate as a teacher of mathematics and for several years assisted the Math Department by teaching in this area. Several years ago. with the renewal of interest in the teaching of Italian, Mr. Morabito worked diligently to develop this program and became an extraordinarily fine teacher of the Italian language. His warm personality, his quiet and unassuming manner, and his dedication to his students have endeared him to all. We wish him many years of good health in his retirement. Mrs Beatrice Lehrman Mrs. Lehrman began teaching English at Lawrence High School in 1962. An outstanding scholar with a great personal concern for all her students, Mrs. Lehrman brought a breadth of intellectualism and appreciation for the literary arts to the many students in her classes. For several years she taught the Advanced Placement English classes and helped many students earn college credit prior to their freshman year in college Mrs. Lehrman retired at the end of January, 1977, and has been enjoying her rewards of leisure living for the past several months. We wish her well in the future. Edwin D. Krawitz Principal LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT MS. BERNSTEIN: A trip to Nirobi on a bubble. MR. BRADY: A new set of names to drop. MR. As from the house your mother sees You playing round the garden trees, So you may see, if you will look Through the windows of this book, Another child, far, faraway And in another garden, play. But do not think you can at all, By knocking on the window, call That child to hear you. He intent Is all on his play — business bent. He does not hear; he will not look, Not yet be lured out of this book. For, long ago, the truth to say, He has grown up and gone away And it is but a child of air That lingers in the garden there.
