Text from Pages 1 - 264 of the 1976 volume:

We as human beings change. The immeasurable span of our minds incurs change. We see fit to set the wheels of social evolution in motion. Remember, we shape the discoveries that time takes credit for. Through time, We are able to realize growth in ourselves, and to direct our energies towards change in society. Yesterday’s accomplishments are akin to today through memories preserved. Tomorrow we will undoubtedly acknowledge the revelations of today. It’s a cycle of human advancement, individual, yet universal in effect. This process filters out the negative, and progressively reaffirms our will to better ourselves, and to develop our human resources. From finger paints and ponytails Jumping rope and paper sails. Water guns and pails of sand Mudpie fights and holding hands. To part-time jobs and college qualms Yearbook signing and senior proms. Sunny days and teary eyes Butterflies and long goodbyes. The friends we’ve known and grown to love Reaching out for stars above. Kindergarten days now past The world awaits us; it’s ours to grasp. Time has no divisions to mark its passage, there is beginning of a new month or year. Even when a new and fire no thunderstorm or blare of trumpets to announce the century begins, it is only we mortals who ring bells off pistols. 1 2; . . . not because he alone among creatures has an a spirit capable oj compassion and sacrifice inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, aAiof endurance. Our firmest convictions ore apt to be the most suspect. They mark our limitations and our bounds. Life is a petty thing unless it is moved by the indomitable urge to extend its boundaries. Observe always that every thing is the result of a change and get used to thinking that there is nothing nature loves so well as to change existing forms and to make new ones like them. Progress is impossible without change: and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything. It is common sense to take a method and try it. If it fads, admit it frankly and openly. But above all, try something. Kretz, executive assistant principal at Lawrence High School, has announced his plans to retire at the end of the 1975-76 school year. Mr. Kretz came to Lawrence High School in September, 1948, after having served in the U.S. Air Force in W.W. II and upon graduation from Cornell University. He is a product of Long Island, having grown up in Amityville. At Amityville High School he earned a reputation as an outstanding athlete and scholar. While at Cornell, Mr. Kretz was captain of the football team and acclaimed as an extraordinary college athlete. He began his teaching career at Lawrence High School and over a period of ten years taught in the English, Mathematics, and Science Departments. In 1959 Mr. Kretz became an assistant principal in charge of discipline. A number of years thereafter he received the title of executive assistant principal, which he holds today. Mr. Kretz has the extraordinary gift of relating to people in a way that few can duplicate. Over the years he has helped hundreds of students achieve success in their high school careers, whereas they might have dropped out of school prior to graduating. He is loved and admired by his colleagues as an outstanding educator and gentleman. His contributions to Lawrence High School are legion and his presence will be sorely missed. The entire faculty and student body join in wishing him many years of good health and happiness in his retirement, A dUiJl EDKtab Edwin D. Krawitz Principal Next September, returning students and faculty will find something vital missing in Lawrence High School. The affable WAK, who for over a quarter of a century served School District 15 with distinction, will be retired. Walter A. Kretz brought to the classroom and administrator's seat the living experience of a totally concerned father of a struggling large family. There he learned that the care and handling of the young was based on human understanding and love. With sagacious, Lincolnesque insight, he preferred the carrot to the stick,” but kept in reserve the mailed fist concealed within the velvet glove.” The ways and means” he used in problem solving and tension reducing during the crisis years 1960-1976 - his assistant principalship tenure - were wonders to behold. His friendly, winning, sly grin often succeeded when all else failed. He will be difficult to replace. Wally, the school will be poorer without you. You leave greatly admired, respected and loved. 'U, Sophomores 238 In Memoriam To Doug Carr Douglas Carr was a very special person and was well liked by everyone. We can easily relate and express our feelings; we were extremely close friends of Dougie and Ms family. Roy owned a boat with Dougie over the summer. They were involved in a boat accident in which Dougie saved a boy's life. We can't remember anybody having a bad time or experience when Dougie was around. NotMng upset him in life; he never let anything bring Mm down or conflict with his enjoyment. Among our friends, Dougie was known as the peacemaker. Dougie had the unique gift of being able to relate to all people. The lives of Ms family and friends will never be the same without him. Marcie Glickman Ronnie Pinto Roy Simon 240 Stuart Yormak, Valedictorian As we approach our last days at Lawrence High School, our thoughts turn to the pleasant experiences and rewards which bind us together. What we have done here will reflect in everything else that we do in our lifetime - we can never escape from Lawrence, no matter how far we travel in time and distance. As seniors, part of the tomorrow we dreamed of yesterday has now passed on. We have left our mark in Lawrence, and Lawrence, in turn, has left her imprint on us. Undoubtedly, a unique and personal aspect of high school will be remembered by each of us for the rest of our lives - a particular group of fellow students, a favorite teacher, or even knowledge learned in class. Regrettably, many friends will part, perhaps forever, as these years at Lawrence terminate. We have shared together the most characteristic hallmark of the senior year: the anxieties of making future plans and the relief of knowing that our plans have been secured. As seniors, we are standing on the threshold of maturity, faced with new reponsibilities and the promise of realizing them. There is a great deal to be accomplished, so much time if we use it well, so little if we waste it. When we look back upon Lawrence, we must think of it not only as the past, but also as a pan of our present and future. Jonathan Weinberg, Salutatorian Give me the young man who has brains enough to make a fool of himself. ” - Robert Louis Stevenson The person we think a fool may simply be the one with the wit and courage to be an individual, to follow his own convictions, even when they are unpopular. Were we all such fools the world might be a better place. When we’re among swingers and told to think only of the present, it might not hurt to concern ourselves a little with the future, and to remember our collective past. When we are among those who would only work and plan for the future, it may not hurt to remember that, after all, we live in the present. And when we find ourselves among students searching for eternal verities to write in this yearbook, it might not hurt to remember Alice. ’Really, now you ask me,’ said Alice, very much confused, T don’t think 'Then you shouldn’t talk' said the Hatter. - Lewis Carroll As the school year draws to an end, it is a time of both happiness and sadness. Happiness, because we have completed a milestone. Sadness, because seniors say goodbye to friends and teachers, sometimes forever. It is a time too, when seniors go forth, some to continue their formal studies, but all hopefully, to become useful constituents of our democratic society. I see our class as a very special one. We are the graduates of the bicentennial year of the birth of our nation. Our educational process represents the culmination of years of progress in education, science, and technology. Two hundred years ago, our forefathers set out to make of this nation a great one. It rests with us, each and every member of our class, to continue this pursuit. I cannot say farewell without first expressing my gratitude to our wonderful faculty and administration and to all those at Lawrence High School who guided us, instructed us, and enriched our lives. We shall miss you. To my classmates, I say farewell, and may your years be filled with success. Arnold Levanihal. Third Honor Speaker One Last Look Some People We Missed. . . On the Road To Find Out Well, I left my happy home to see what I could find out. I left my folk and friends with the aim to clear my mind out. Well I hit the rowdy road, and many kinds I met there, many stories told me of the way to get there. So on and on I go, the seconds tick the time out, there’s so much left to know, and I'm on the road to find out. Well in the end I'll know, but on the way I wonder through descending snow, and through the frost and thunder, I listen to the wind come howl, telling me I have to hurry, I listen to the robin's song, saying not to worry. So on and on I go, the seconds tick the time out, there’s so much left to know, and I'm on the road to find out. Then I found myself alone, hoping someone would miss me. Thinking about my home, and the last woman to kiss me, kiss me. But sometimes you have to moan when nothing seems to suit yer, but nevertheless you know, you’re locked towards the future. So on and on you go, the seconds tick the time out. There’s so much left to know, and I’m on the road to find out. Then I found my head one day when I wasn’t even trying, and here I have to say, ’cause there is no use in lying, lying. Yes the answer lies within, so why not take a look now, kick out the devil’s sin, and pick up, pick up a good book now. Yes the answer lies within, so why not take a look now, kick out the devil’s sin, and pickup, pickup a good book now. Happy Birthday9 America!
