Sorry, Wrong Number Applause Seated from left to right: Mrs. Bernard S. Meyer, Raymond S. Baron, (President of the Board of Education), Mrs. Bernard Nelson. Standing: Dr. Alvin Katz, Peter N. Bertucci, Joel B. Gewanter, Jesse Cestari BOARD OF EDUCATION Dr. Samuel Cohen, Superintendent It’s small wonder that we find our lives and our society so complex, confusing and filled with turmoil and anxiety today. So much has happened so quickly. We have gone from the Half-Moon to the walk on the moon in 360 years. Henry Hudson and his men stopped at what is now Staten Island and during the following months travelled upriver. This led to the development of New York City and Hudson Valley up to Albany. That was the simple beginning in 1609, and in 1969 American men walked on the moon. We should realize that there are no simple answers, that there is no single way and that our chances of moving into a better world together are limited by the energy we waste in fighting with each other, which often results in our losing sight of our most import-tant purposes. Even worse is the apathy and lack of involvement by the majority of human beings whose active involvement and individual and collective contributions could change the course of history. We must all become involved. We must look carefully at those who would direct or lead us. We must consider if we are acting on the basis of reason or emotion and if we are avoiding using others, and being used by others. We must try to eliminate or improve conditions that are wrong, but still recognize that which we have accomplished that is worthwhile and must be kept and further developed. We must work for the overall and meaningful objectives we share and not allow ourselves to become bogged down in the petty, the personal, the vengeful, the bitter, the angry and the destructive. Our actions in each specific instance have a cumulative effect on the whole. We must do these things with full knowledge that the outcomes cannot be guaranteed and that we may deem our greatest successes failures, as Henry Hudson did when he discovered the Hudson River. On the other hand, we might be fortunate enough to see success crown our efforts and have the extra reward of excitement and satisfaction such as felt by Neil Armstrong when he was the first human to set foot on the moon’s surface. Good luck to each of you in all of your future endeavors. Samuel Cohen, Superintendent Walter Kretz, Executive Assistant Principal Edwin D. Krawitz, Principal After a decade of pessimism, war, social agony, spiraling inflation, and other assorted ills, we are now beginning to see the clouds lift and sunlight peek through. This has been reflected in many ways during the past year-does not require lengthy discussion here. The colleges and universities once again reflect the atmosphere of academic life for what they were originally intended. This, in turn, has brought to the nation’s secondary schools the renewed interest on the part of the students of the seriousness and importance of learning, as part of the preparation for the years after high school. The challenge of the ’70’s is complex and demanding. You will need to utilize all of your abilities and energies to prepare for what lies ahead. You heave what it takes-do it successfully. Best of luck to each of you. Edwin D. Krawitz, Principal As graduates in 1973, you are coming to maturity at a time when our society is in great turmoil, conflict and anxiety as we attempt to come to grips with some of the basic issues affecting all of us. With the 200th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence just four years away, we are still asking just what freedom means and how it applies to every individual. This has involved us in questions of minority rights. Women’s Liberation, questions about sex, marriage and family and questions of how much direct control the individual shall have over himself in terms of health and activities. How much control is necessary for Government to exert to protect the health of the individual and the group? This has involved issues ranging from the right to avoid innoculation because of religious conviction to the right to an environment with clean air and water. The meaning of education and work and their place in life of the individual is under scrutiny. The relation of nation to nation and the control of the destructive forces that we have created are major concerns. You will be part of the effort of the society to determine its priorities and establish the direction for answers to all of these kinds of questions. We expect that you will approach our Bicentennial with the right to the pursuit of happiness, involved in trying to establish a more perfect union, but with much to be done before there will again be domestic tranquillity. We hope that you will have the intelligence, the knowledge, the patience, the skill, the wisdom and the strength to play your role in social and political responsibility and at the same time to have a rich and rewarding personal life. Good luck and best wishes from the Board of Education. The day shrank down to an hour When old men limped in the garden; The day will last forever When it is nothing at all. Theodore Spencer 146 In Memory of Willy Canick whose gentle soul touched our lives with love He never thought twice about helping and he was always there when a friend needed his advice or guidance. His absence will always be felt by all of those who knew and loved him. Charles Berman More than a brother or a friend, Willy was a source of strength to whom nothing seemed impossible. When his mind was set any goal could be achieved. Willy was always searching for meaning in life, questioning the many values that he was surrounded by. I cannot ask why, but hope that someday in the future we will be one again. 147 Jonny Canick STEPHANIE ABRAMS-'Sunshine in the heart is brighter than all the gold of kings.” G.I.A. a F.T.A. 3.
