DEDICATION THE RESULTS of Mr. Arthur W. Coombs’ good works and invaluable service have been widely felt and deeply appreciated not only by those of us in the Class of 1964, but also by all other students and members of our community. Born in Manhattan, Mr. Coombs received his B.A. from the College of the City of New York and his M.A. from Columbia University. In 1934 after additional graduate work at New York University and teaching positions in other parts of New York State, Mr. Coombs came to Lawrence as an English teacher. In 1942 he was appointed principal of Inwood School Number Two where he remained until 1955. He was then transferred to Woodmere School Number Six as principal. In June of 1958 Mr. Coombs succeeded Dr. Lawrence V. Dodd as the Superintendent of Schools. Mr. Coombs’ concern for the welfare of the district’s students, coupled with his ability as an administrator, has enabled him to cope with the many difficulties which arise. His dynamic nature and unbounded energy continue to bring him closer to his goal of providing the highest standards of education to the entire district. The Class of 1964 takes great pride in dedicating this yearbook to Mr. Arthur W. Coombs—a truly superior administrator and educator. [6]

IN RECOGNITION MISS KATHRYN KOERBER, teacher of shorthand and typing, is retiring this year after forty-one years of devoted service at Lawrence High School. After completing her studies at Plattsburgh State Teachers College and New York University, Miss Koerber taught in Southampton, Long Island, and Tuckahoe, New York, before becoming a member of the faculty at Lawrence. During her years at Lawrence Miss Koerber helped to prepare many students for the business world. Through her teaching they learned proper office attitudes, mastery of various office aids, and other skills essential in the modern office. When asked her feelings about leaving, Miss Koerber commented, “I have enjoyed teaching at Lawrence and I will certainly miss it, but I am also looking forward to this opportunity for freedom and traveling.” The Class of 1964 wishes to thank Miss Koerber for the many years of dedicated service which she has rendered to Lawrence. To her we extend our best wishes for future happiness. [7]
