Their search for truth distinguished them from their neighbors, their ancestors, and many of their descendants. Out of this search evolved a culture and a civilization worthy of our close study. Materially we have made great progress but proportionate to the time that has elapsed, we have advanced little beyond their culture, their philosophy, and their democracy. Be- cause the Greeks sought those things that we who are attempting to record the highlights of our education are still seeking, we are basing the record of our attempts and achievements on their culture, which is so inextricably a part of our own.
